Usually—but the answer depends on the graphics card’s hardware features and the game’s requirements, not just the DirectX version shown in Windows. Press Windows + R, enter dxdiag, and check the GPU’s Feature Levels. A level of 11_0 or higher indicates basic Direct3D 12 hardware support; a specific game may require more.

Check your graphics card in DxDiag

  1. Press Windows + R, type dxdiag, and press Enter.
  2. If Windows asks whether to check that drivers are digitally signed, select Yes.
  3. Open the Display tab. On a system with multiple graphics adapters, inspect the relevant Display or Render tabs for each GPU.
  4. Note the GPU Name, Driver Model, Feature Levels, Display Memory or Dedicated Video Memory, and Driver Date and version. Use Save All Information if you need to share the report.

Look at Feature Levels, not only the DirectX Version near the top of DxDiag. The version reports the DirectX software installed in Windows; it does not establish that the GPU supports every Direct3D 12 feature. Microsoft recommends DxDiag for viewing DirectX components and graphics-driver information (Microsoft’s DirectX guidance); NVIDIA also documents this Feature Levels check (NVIDIA support).

Read the Feature Levels result

Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 hardware feature levels include 11_0, 11_1, 12_0, and 12_1. For basic Direct3D 12 hardware support, 11_0 is the floor; a game can demand a higher level or additional capabilities (Microsoft’s feature-level reference).

Highest relevant level shown in DxDiag What it means for compatibility
No 11_0 or higher Does not meet the basic Direct3D 12 hardware-support threshold described by Microsoft.
11_0 or 11_1 Basic Direct3D 12 compatibility; a game requiring 12_0 or above may not work.
12_0 Meets a 12_0 feature-level requirement, provided the game’s other hardware, driver, and operating-system requirements are met.
12_1 Meets feature-level requirements up to 12_1, subject to the game’s other requirements.
12_2 or Ultimate capabilities May indicate support for relevant DirectX 12 Ultimate capabilities; verify the game’s specific feature requirements and the capabilities exposed by the driver.

This is a capability check, not a speed ranking. Microsoft notes that a GPU with a lower feature level can outperform one with a higher level in some DirectX 12 games (Microsoft DirectX blog). Use the game’s GPU recommendations or reliable game-specific testing to judge performance.

DirectX 12 is not the same as DirectX 12 Ultimate

Basic DirectX 12 support means the GPU and driver expose a suitable Direct3D feature level. DirectX 12 Ultimate refers to a more advanced feature set that includes DirectX Raytracing, Variable Rate Shading, Mesh Shaders, and Sampler Feedback. It is a hardware-and-software capability target, not a runtime download that adds missing GPU features (Microsoft’s DirectX 12 Ultimate announcement).

A game that uses DirectX 12 does not automatically require Ultimate. If a title specifically requires ray tracing or another Ultimate-associated capability, check that requirement against your exact GPU and driver. The DirectX 12 label alone does not establish support for these features; see NVIDIA’s overview of DirectX 12 Ultimate for its feature list.

Compare your GPU with the game’s requirements

Check the title’s official system requirements and support notes rather than relying on a generic “DirectX 12 required” label. Look for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A required Direct3D feature level, such as 12_0.
  • The specified GPU model and minimum dedicated VRAM.
  • Any Shader Model requirement, if listed.
  • Ray-tracing or other optional-feature requirements.
  • Supported Windows version and required driver.
  • CPU, memory, and storage requirements that could also prevent launch or affect performance.

A GPU can pass the basic 11_0 check yet miss a game’s higher feature-level requirement. Even when feature-level compatibility is sufficient, too little VRAM or rendering power can cause low frame rates, stuttering, texture problems, or crashes. Treat “can launch” and “can play well” as separate questions.

What to do if a DirectX 12 game will not launch

  1. Confirm the adapter. Check every relevant DxDiag Display or Render tab and identify which GPU the game is using. On a laptop or multi-GPU PC, do not assume the first listed adapter is the one running the game.
  2. Compare feature levels. Match the game’s stated requirement with the levels exposed by the GPU. A driver update cannot add a hardware feature that the card does not support.
  3. Update the graphics driver. Get the driver from the GPU maker: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Microsoft notes that compatible graphics drivers are required for DirectX 12 functionality in Windows subsystems (Microsoft support).
  4. Choose the high-performance GPU if needed. Use Windows per-app graphics settings or the graphics vendor’s control panel, where available, to assign the game to the dedicated GPU. Restart the game after changing the selection.
  5. Check the rest of the requirements. Compare dedicated VRAM, CPU, system memory, Windows version, and any ray-tracing or shader requirements. Windows 11’s minimum requirements include DirectX 12-compatible graphics and a compatible WDDM driver, but meeting that Windows requirement does not guarantee compatibility with every game (Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements).
  6. Repair game-specific problems. If the hardware appears to meet the requirements, verify the game files through its launcher, reset its graphics configuration, and check the publisher’s support notes. Trying another DirectX 12 game can help distinguish a title-specific fault from a system-wide one.

If an older game reports a missing file such as d3dx9_*.dll, that is a legacy DirectX component issue, not proof that the GPU lacks DirectX 12 support. Microsoft’s DirectX installation guidance distinguishes current Windows components from legacy files some older applications use. Do not use third-party “DirectX 12” downloads as a hardware fix.

Integrated graphics and older cards

Integrated graphics can expose Direct3D 12 support; being integrated does not automatically make a GPU incompatible. Likewise, some older discrete cards may expose basic Direct3D 12 support. For either type, check the exact model’s DxDiag feature levels, its driver, and the game’s GPU and memory requirements. If the game specifies dedicated VRAM, shared system memory is not the same thing.

When a GPU upgrade is necessary

An upgrade is relevant when the card lacks the game’s required feature level, cannot provide a specifically required Ultimate capability, falls below the title’s minimum VRAM, or delivers performance you find unacceptable despite appropriate settings and a current driver. If the feature level and hardware requirements are met, first rule out the wrong adapter, driver, game files, and configuration before buying hardware. For a definitive model-specific assessment, compare the exact GPU and the game’s published requirements.
