Yes, but only in a narrow situation. WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner can be suitable for a specific, exposed electrical contact when the PS5 is completely shut down, unplugged, cool and allowed to dry fully. It is not a general-purpose PS5 cleaner: do not spray it over the shell, through vents, into the fan, disc drive or power supply, or use ordinary WD-40 Multi-Use Product as a substitute.
Which WD-40 product do you have?
Read the can before doing anything. WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner is marketed for sensitive electronics and electrical equipment. WD-40 says it dries quickly, leaves no residue under intended use, and is compatible with most plastics, rubber and metals. It also says to test plastics first and avoid adhesives, screens and keyboards.
WD-40 Specialist Electric Parts Cleaner is a related product aimed at parts such as printed circuit boards, connectors and gaming controllers. Neither product is the same as the original WD-40 Multi-Use Product, which is a water-displacing penetrant and lubricant. Do not substitute it, a degreaser, lubricant or carburetor cleaner for an electronics contact cleaner.

Sony’s PS5 maintenance guidance favors a dry cloth and low-powered vacuum for routine cleaning. Its safety documentation also warns against applying alcohol and other volatile substances to the exterior. WD-40’s “safe on most plastics” claim is not a guarantee for every PS5 coating, adhesive, rubber part or finish.

Never spray a powered or warm PS5
- Use Control Center > Power > Turn Off PS5.
- Wait until the power indicator is completely off.
- Disconnect the AC cable and all other cables. Sony warns against unplugging while the indicator is lit or blinking because of possible data loss, corruption or damage.
- Let the console cool before removing covers or exposing a component.
Do not reconnect power until the cleaner has completely evaporated. “Residue-free” is a manufacturer claim for directed use, not permission to power on immediately; excess liquid can remain trapped in a port, seam or under a component.
How to use it for a specific contact problem
- Confirm that the can specifically identifies an electronics/electrical contact cleaner.
- Expose only the affected contact or removed component. Do not spray blindly through an assembled console’s vents or openings.
- Keep the product away from screens, labels, adhesives, rubberized parts and untested plastics. Follow the can’s label and safety data.
- Apply the smallest practical amount, preferably to the contact or a suitable swab rather than flooding the assembly.
- Position the part so excess can run off, then allow complete evaporation in a clean, ventilated area.
- Inspect for remaining grime or physical damage, refit covers correctly and reconnect cables only when fully dry.
Cleaning can help contamination-related intermittency; it cannot repair a broken HDMI socket, damaged cable, failed component, bad solder joint or mechanical fault.

Routine PS5 dust cleaning
- Turn the console off, unplug it and wait for it to cool.
- Work in a ventilated area with at least 10 cm of clearance around the console; avoid long-fiber carpet and cramped spaces.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth.
- Use a low-powered handheld vacuum around vents and accessible dust pockets, without forcing an attachment into ports or delicate openings.
- Refit every cover before use.
Do not use contact cleaner, household cleaner, lubricant, alcohol or solvent as a substitute for dust removal.

- If the PS5 is running, shut it down normally and wait for the indicator to go dark.
- Unplug the AC cable and other connections; do not repeatedly power-cycle it.
- Leave it in a clean, ventilated place until fully dry. Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun or flame.
- If a large amount entered the console, power supply or disc drive—or there is odor, smoke, abnormal noise, repeated shutdown or failure to start—stop using it and contact PlayStation Support or a qualified repair technician.
A small amount of the correct contact cleaner on an exposed contact is generally a lower-risk situation, but the amount, location and product variant still matter.

Safer alternatives by task
- Dust: soft dry microfiber or lint-free cloth and a low-powered handheld vacuum.
- Electrical contamination: a purpose-made electronics contact cleaner whose label explains material compatibility, used only on a disconnected, exposed part.
- Corrosion, liquid damage, intermittent HDMI/USB or overheating: professional diagnosis and repair.
Experienced repairers may use high-purity isopropyl alcohol on appropriate exposed parts, but that does not make it suitable for the PS5 exterior; Sony’s safety guidance warns against alcohol and other volatile substances there.
Common mistakes
- Confusing Specialist Contact Cleaner with ordinary WD-40.
- Treating “most plastics” as universal PS5 compatibility.
- Using contact cleaner as compressed air or a dust solvent.
- Spraying through vents and pushing dust or solvent deeper into the console.
- Applying too much, or powering on before trapped liquid evaporates.
- Assuming a temporary improvement proves the hardware is repaired.

Can I spray it into PS5 vents?
No. It is not a dusting product, and spraying through vents can spread dust, pool solvent and expose materials unnecessarily.
Can it fix a PS5 HDMI or USB problem?
It may help only when contamination is the cause. It cannot repair physical damage, failed electronics, broken solder joints or a damaged cable.
