Yes. Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 works with a Windows PC over a data-capable micro-USB cable or Bluetooth. For Steam games, try Steam Input first; for a non-Steam game that does not recognize the controller, DS4Windows can provide an Xbox-style input that many PC games accept. Connecting it to Windows is only the first step: support and features vary by game.
What you need
- Wired: A DUALSHOCK 4 and a micro-USB cable that carries data. A charge-only cable can light or charge the controller without letting Windows receive input. Sony documents USB connection in its PC controller guidance.
- Wireless: Bluetooth built into the PC or a USB Bluetooth adapter. A desktop may not have Bluetooth even if it has Wi-Fi; Microsoft explains that an adapter can add Bluetooth to a PC without it in its Windows pairing instructions.
- Game support: Steam Input for Steam games; for games outside Steam, first try the game’s own support, then consider DS4Windows if needed.
These instructions concern Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4, not every third-party controller styled like one. Compatible-looking controllers can use different USB, Bluetooth, and input protocols.
Connect the controller by USB
- Connect the controller to the PC with a data-capable micro-USB cable.
- Press the PS button and allow Windows to detect it.
- Launch the game and test the controls. If you use Steam, you can also check Steam’s Controller settings to see whether it detects the controller.
A cable connection is a useful first test because it avoids Bluetooth pairing. If the controller charges but Windows does not detect it, try a known data/sync cable, a different USB port, and a direct connection rather than a hub. Connect it before starting the game. A damaged controller port or USB driver issue can produce the same symptom as a charge-only cable.

Put the DUALSHOCK 4 in pairing mode
- Turn the controller off and disconnect its USB cable.
- Hold Share and PS together until the light bar flashes.

Pair in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth.
- Choose Wireless Controller when it appears, then complete pairing.
- If it does not reconnect automatically, press the PS button.
Microsoft’s Bluetooth pairing guide gives the current Windows 11 path. If labels differ after an update, search Settings for “Bluetooth.”
Windows 10 legacy path
On Windows 10, the path is Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; it may still run, but it no longer receives normal free security updates, technical support, or Windows Update support.

The controller can be paired with only one device at a time, according to Sony. Switching between a PC, PS4, phone, or another device may require pairing it again.
Use the controller with Steam
Steam has official Steam Input support for the PS4 controller. Connect the controller, open Steam’s Controller settings, and confirm that it appears. Enable PlayStation-controller support if Steam offers that option, then start the game. If controls need adjustment, use the game’s Steam Input layout.

Steam Input can configure or translate controller input, as well as support remapping and per-game layouts. A game may show PlayStation prompts, Xbox-style A/B/X/Y prompts, or prompts determined by its own input settings. Xbox prompts do not by themselves mean the DUALSHOCK 4 is failing.
Use it with a non-Steam game
Try the game’s native controller support first. If a game from the Epic Games Store, Xbox app, PC Game Pass, another launcher, or a standalone installer does not recognize the DUALSHOCK 4, DS4Windows is an option. It maps supported PlayStation controllers to a virtual controller; an Xbox 360/XInput-style output can help with games that expect XInput.

- Get the software from the official DS4Windows project repository or its project website, not an unrelated download mirror.
- Install the required components if prompted, connect the controller by USB or Bluetooth, and open DS4Windows.
- Confirm that the physical controller appears, select an appropriate virtual output profile, and start the game.
- If input is duplicated, choose one remapping path and use the project’s recommended controller-hiding configuration where needed.
The project lists Windows 10 or newer, .NET 8 Desktop Runtime, Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable, ViGEmBus, and a USB or Bluetooth connection among its requirements. Requirements and setup can change, so consult the project’s current documentation.
Choose the simplest setup for your game

For a Steam game, start with Steam Input. For a non-Steam game, try direct support before adding a mapper. You generally do not need to buy a special controller accessory if you already have the needed cable or Bluetooth hardware.

Fix common detection and input problems
Windows does not detect the controller over USB
- Try a known data-capable micro-USB cable; power-only cables are a common cause.
- Try another USB port and temporarily bypass a hub or front-panel port.
- Press PS, restart Windows, and connect the controller before opening the game.
- If possible, test another controller on the port or test this controller over Bluetooth. A loose or damaged micro-USB port is another possibility.
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth
- Charge it, turn it off, then hold Share and PS until the light bar flashes.
- In Windows Bluetooth settings, remove an old Wireless Controller entry if present, then toggle Bluetooth off and on.
- Pair again with the controller near the PC or adapter.
- If other Bluetooth devices also fail, check the PC’s Bluetooth driver. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide recommends checking charge, pairing mode, distance, and removing and re-adding a device.
Windows sees it, but the game does not
- Check that the game supports controllers; Windows pairing alone does not ensure game support.
- For Steam, check Steam’s Controller settings and the game’s Steam Input layout.
- For a non-Steam game that expects XInput, try DS4Windows.
- After changing an input setting, close and relaunch the game. Close other controller mappers that could be intercepting input.
Inputs happen twice or menus scroll repeatedly
This commonly happens when Steam Input and DS4Windows both expose the controller, or another mapper is active too. Close the game, choose one input-remapping layer for that game, disable the other, and relaunch. If using DS4Windows, follow its guidance for hiding the physical controller so the game receives only the virtual one; see the project’s duplicate-input guidance.
Bluetooth connects but disconnects
Check the controller’s charge, keep it close to the adapter, and consider interference or an unstable Bluetooth driver. It may also be reconnecting to another paired device. DS4Windows notes that it supports the Microsoft Bluetooth stack and that some third-party stacks or adapters have compatibility limitations; consult its current project documentation if you use the mapper.
The game shows Xbox button prompts
This is expected when the game receives XInput-style output from DS4Windows, when Steam Input presents an Xbox-style layout, or when the game supports only XInput prompts. Prompt style depends on the game and input path, not just the physical controller.

Compatibility depends on the game, connection method, and input path. Basic buttons and sticks are the main expectation, but do not assume every title handles the touchpad, motion controls, light bar, rumble, headset audio, microphone, or PS button identically. Some features may be unsupported, treated differently, or require a particular input mode. Check the specific game’s controller options if one of these matters to you.
