Yes. You can close a personal Microsoft account and create another, but the replacement is a separate account: it will not inherit your old email, files, Xbox identity, purchases, balance, or Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft gives you a 30- or 60-day period to reopen an account marked for closure; after that, the account and its data are permanently deleted. Microsoft also says an email address previously used for a Microsoft account cannot be reused, even after closure. If you only want a different email or sign-in name, adding an alias is usually safer.
First decide whether you need to delete the account
Closing an account is different from signing out of Outlook, removing an account from a Windows PC, disconnecting OneDrive, or switching accounts in an app. Those actions affect a device or service; they do not close the Microsoft account itself.
Also check what kind of account you have. The closure steps below are for a personal Microsoft account, used for services such as Outlook.com, OneDrive, Xbox, Microsoft Store, Skype, and consumer Microsoft 365. A work or school account is managed by the organization that issued it; contact its administrator about access or deletion. Personal and work or school accounts cannot be merged. Microsoft explains the difference between account types.
If you cannot sign in because the account is compromised or you have lost access, account closure is not a substitute for recovery. Use Microsoft’s sign-in helper and account recovery guidance first. If you still have access to a compromised account, change its password and review recent activity and security information before deciding what to do.

What happens to the old account and its contents?
When you mark the account for closure, it is not erased immediately. You select a 30- or 60-day reopening period. Signing in during that period and completing the requested security verification cancels closure and reopens the account. Once the selected period ends, Microsoft says the account and its data and content are permanently deleted. See Microsoft’s reopening instructions.

These are account-level consequences; billing or licenses obtained through a retailer, app store, employer, or another provider may have separate terms. Check the relevant service and billing source rather than assuming that closure cancels every charge.
Microsoft does not provide a general way to merge personal Microsoft accounts. Using a new account will not move your old account’s purchases, balance, gamertag, or game progress. Microsoft’s account-combination guidance explains that accounts can be used side by side but not combined.

An alias is another email address attached to the same Microsoft account—not a separate account. Aliases share the account’s password, contacts, storage, subscriptions, and settings, so this option preserves the existing identity and its associated services.

- Open your Microsoft account’s How you sign in page and sign in.
- Choose Add email, then add a new Outlook.com address or an address you already use with another email provider.
- Complete verification if prompted. If you want, make the new address the primary alias.
- Check the consequences before removing the old alias. An address already linked to another Microsoft account cannot be added, and removing an Outlook.com address may have lasting consequences.
Use Microsoft’s alias instructions for current options. An alias is the better fit if you want a new sign-in name but need to keep Xbox purchases, storage, contacts, subscriptions, or account history.
Create and test the new account before closing the old one
You can keep both personal accounts. Creating the replacement first gives you somewhere to copy personal files and lets you verify that its sign-in and recovery details work before you give up access to the old account. It does not migrate anything automatically.
- Go to Microsoft account sign-up, or visit Outlook.com and choose Create free account if you want a new Outlook.com address.
- Alternatively, register with an email address from another provider.
- Use an address that has never been used for a Microsoft account. Microsoft’s guidance says a previously used address cannot be reused, even after the old account has been closed for a long time.
- Complete the sign-up and verification prompts, add recovery information, and sign in to confirm the new account works.
Do not plan to recreate the old Hotmail, Outlook.com, Live.com, or MSN.com address under the replacement account. Closing the account does not make its address available again. Microsoft’s account-creation instructions cover address availability.

Before closure, work through this checklist while you can still access the old account:

- OneDrive: Download or copy personal files and photos to the new account, then verify the copies open. Check storage capacity, shared links, and permissions; shared files may need to be shared again. Copying can also lose some original file metadata. Do not copy employer- or school-owned confidential material without permission. See Microsoft’s OneDrive copying guidance.
- Outlook: Save important messages and attachments and export or copy contacts. Tell people your new address, and update it on banking, shopping, government, school, social, and subscription accounts. Replace the old address as a recovery address on other services.
- BitLocker: Locate and securely save recovery keys you may need for encrypted Windows devices before closure. Without the right key, you may be unable to unlock the encrypted data.
- Subscriptions and billing: Review Services & subscriptions in the account dashboard, note renewal dates, and turn off recurring billing or cancel where appropriate. Check whether a subscription was purchased through Microsoft, Apple, Google, Xbox, or another seller. Microsoft says a Microsoft 365 subscription cannot be transferred to another account; for Microsoft 365 Family, the new owner generally must wait until the current period ends, turn off recurring billing, and buy under the new account. - Skype and Xbox: Use Skype Credit and review active subscriptions and auto-recharge. If you care about the old gamertag, game progress, purchases, or balance, keep using the old account; those assets cannot be moved to the replacement.
- Other sign-ins: Update the email address wherever the old one is used to log in or receive security codes. Add the new Microsoft account to devices and services individually as needed.
Close the old personal Microsoft account
Only proceed once you have saved what you need and confirmed the replacement works. Microsoft’s documented steps are:
- Open Microsoft’s Close account page and sign in. Closure requires access to the account.
- Complete any verification, confirm the displayed account is the one you intend to close, and choose Next.
- Read the warnings and select the acknowledgement checkboxes.
- Choose a 30- or 60-day reopening period, select a reason, then choose Mark account for closure.
- Keep a note of the deadline. Avoid signing in during the selected period unless you want to cancel closure and reopen the account.
If you have reset all sign-in verification information, Microsoft says you must wait 60 days before you can close the account. Menu wording may vary slightly by region or account page, so follow the live Microsoft instructions if the labels differ.
Changed your mind after marking it for closure?
Before the selected 30- or 60-day period expires, go to account.microsoft.com, sign in, and enter the requested security code. Microsoft says this cancels closure and reopens the account. After the period expires, Microsoft says the account cannot be reopened. The same guidance notes that an account not signed into for more than two years may already have been deleted and may not be recoverable.

Which option should you choose?
- Want a different email but the same Microsoft identity? Add an alias; do not close the account.
- Need Xbox purchases, game progress, a gamertag, balance, or an existing Microsoft 365 subscription? Keep the account those assets belong to. They do not transfer to a replacement.
- Need a genuinely separate identity and accept losing access to old account assets? Create and test the new account first, prepare your data and billing, then mark the old account for closure.
- Using an employer’s or school’s account? Contact its administrator; consumer closure instructions do not apply.
