What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: HarmonyOS PCs may run many Windows applications through a virtual machine or another compatibility tool, but that is not the same as native Windows support. Huawei’s published PC guidance focuses on applications packaged for HarmonyOS and distributed through AppGallery; it does not promise that ordinary .exe files run directly on HarmonyOS. Compatibility depends on the computer model, HarmonyOS build, Windows image, processor architecture, application and region.
What “HarmonyOS Next for PCs” means
“HarmonyOS NEXT” originally described Huawei’s move toward a self-controlled, native HarmonyOS ecosystem. Huawei’s newer computers are generally marketed as HarmonyOS computers, including HarmonyOS 5 and HarmonyOS 6 products, rather than as a separately defined “HarmonyOS Next PC” edition.
Huawei identifies the HUAWEI MateBook Pro and HUAWEI MateBook Fold as HarmonyOS-powered PCs. The MateBook Fold is described as Huawei’s first foldable PC powered by HarmonyOS in the company’s 2025 annual report. These products are primarily built around native HarmonyOS applications and Huawei’s AppGallery ecosystem, not around a built-in Windows compatibility promise.
Huawei’s PC developer documentation tells developers to adapt applications for PC and 2-in-1 devices and publish HarmonyOS packages. It does not document a universal Windows API layer for launching arbitrary Windows binaries: Huawei PC application adaptation guidance.

Native apps, virtual machines and remote Windows are different
| Method | Where the code runs | Native to HarmonyOS? | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native HarmonyOS port | A HarmonyOS application package | Yes | The developer must create and maintain a separate port. |
| Compatibility layer | Windows program code translated through software | No | Windows APIs, drivers and edge cases may be incomplete. |
| Windows virtual machine | An actual Windows environment inside HarmonyOS | No | Consumes RAM and storage; performance, licensing and hardware access vary. |
| Remote desktop | Another Windows PC or cloud desktop | No | Needs a network connection and can suffer latency. |
| Web application | A browser service | Browser-based | May lack desktop-only features or offline operation. |
This distinction is the key to interpreting claims that a HarmonyOS computer “supports Windows apps.” A virtualized Windows program is still running in Windows; HarmonyOS is hosting that environment rather than executing the Windows binary natively.
What evidence exists for Windows-app support?
Chinasoft’s Hongyun Virtual Machine claim
Chinasoft International said in an April 27, 2026 filing that Hongyun Virtual Machine 2.0 had resolved compatibility issues for more than 2,000 Windows applications on HarmonyOS PCs and had been verified across 12 development scenarios. The filing is evidence that a Windows-compatibility project exists, but it is a company claim, not an independent benchmark or a Huawei-wide guarantee: Chinasoft International filing, April 27, 2026.
A 2025 Chinasoft filing also described Hongyun Virtual Machine as a solution for compatibility with the Windows ecosystem: Chinasoft International filing, August 29, 2025. “More than 2,000” should not be read as “2,000 applications work perfectly.” The filing does not establish feature-by-feature performance, current-version support, graphics acceleration, peripheral compatibility or licensing terms.
Huawei’s own materials
Huawei’s official materials confirm a growing native HarmonyOS PC ecosystem, but the available pages do not publish a complete Windows compatibility matrix or promise native execution of all Windows applications. Huawei’s China consumer page describes HarmonyOS 6 PC products and compares one MateBook with a Windows 11 ThinkPad; a performance comparison is not proof of Windows software compatibility: Huawei HarmonyOS 6 PC information.

Chinese state-media coverage of Huawei’s May 19, 2025 PC launch described a virtual-machine solution intended to reduce migration costs and allow switching between environments without rebooting: Xinhua launch coverage. That description should be attributed to the reported implementation; it does not prove that every model offers seamless side-by-side Windows windows or that every future build behaves the same way.
Which Windows software is most likely to work?
Better candidates
- Basic office and productivity programs.
- Older or relatively self-contained Win32 utilities.
- Tools that do not install kernel-level drivers.
- Development software specifically tested by the virtualization vendor, with a compatible processor and Windows image.
- Programs used inside a conventional virtual Windows desktop rather than demanding direct access to the host GPU or peripherals.
Higher-risk candidates
- Games with kernel-level anti-cheat systems.
- CAD, scientific, video and 3D applications that require reliable GPU acceleration.
- VPN, antivirus, device-management and virtualization software that installs low-level drivers.
- Programs requiring TPM, Secure Boot, proprietary codecs, USB dongles or specialized Windows services.
- Microsoft Store software whose installation or licensing depends on Microsoft account and store infrastructure.
- Enterprise applications tied to certificates, smart cards, managed printing or corporate security agents.
Microsoft’s Windows-on-Arm documentation illustrates why the word “support” needs qualification even in Windows itself: Arm PCs can run x86 and Arm64 applications through emulation, but compatibility remains application-dependent and some architectures and software have limitations: Microsoft Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ.
Why games and professional software are a separate test
A Windows VM may expose virtual graphics hardware rather than the computer’s full native GPU. Before buying, verify DirectX support, 3D acceleration, shader compilation, video encoding, controller input and the game’s anti-cheat requirements. Online-only games, launchers that require Microsoft services and titles using kernel drivers are particularly uncertain.
The same caution applies to professional software. A program may install and open while losing GPU acceleration, plug-ins, hardware licenses, color-management features or access to a capture device. A compatibility list may count “launches” without proving that updates, printing, authentication or production workloads function correctly.

Is Windows included, and is a reboot required?
These are model- and region-specific questions. A product may provide a Huawei virtual-machine application, a partner-supplied Windows image, instructions for installing your own image, a third-party tool or only remote-desktop access. A virtual-machine application is not automatically a Windows license. Windows activation and application licensing remain separate, and some commercial software restricts virtualized use or requires an additional seat.
Launch reporting described switching environments without rebooting, but that could mean a full virtual desktop, a suspended preconfigured machine or another implementation detail. Confirm the exact behavior for the model, software version and China-market configuration you intend to buy.
Hardware and software prerequisites
Check all of the following before relying on Windows software:
- Exact MateBook model, RAM and available storage.
- HarmonyOS version and build, plus the processor architecture.
- Whether the virtualization software supports that architecture, hardware virtualization and the required Windows edition.
- Windows activation and installation-image requirements.
- GPU acceleration and support for external monitors.
- Keyboard layouts, language and input methods.
- Printers, cameras, scanners, audio interfaces, controllers and USB devices.
- VPN, smart-card, certificate and enterprise-management dependencies.
- Huawei account, AppGallery listing and regional download requirements.
Huawei’s device-compatibility documentation covers supported HarmonyOS device categories, including PCs and 2-in-1 hardware, but it is not a Windows-application compatibility matrix: Huawei device compatibility documentation.

Performance, battery and storage trade-offs
Virtualization has unavoidable costs. The Windows environment reserves memory and storage that HarmonyOS cannot use, and CPU architecture translation can reduce performance. GPU acceleration may be incomplete or application-specific. Running a demanding VM can increase power use, shorten battery life and create memory contention between the two operating systems. File sharing, suspend/resume and peripheral hand-off can also be less convenient than on a conventional Windows laptop.
No reliable universal battery, frame-rate or benchmark penalty can be stated without naming the MateBook model, VM version, Windows build and workload. Treat office use and demanding creative or gaming workloads as different purchasing decisions.
HarmonyOS apps and Android apps are not Windows compatibility
Huawei’s strategy is to expand native HarmonyOS applications and services, not simply reproduce every existing desktop ecosystem. Huawei reported more than 350,000 apps and services in the broader AppGallery ecosystem at the end of 2025, but that figure is not a count of desktop PC applications: Huawei 2025 annual report.
Android and Windows are separate technical problems. An Android container or emulator does not automatically run Windows programs, and a Windows VM does not automatically provide Android application support. For each essential program, identify whether you will use a native HarmonyOS version, a web version, an Android solution, a Windows VM or a remote Windows computer.

China-market and international considerations
The cited HarmonyOS PC launches and ecosystem pages are China-focused. AppGallery catalogues, account requirements, language support, payment methods, warranty coverage, software availability and customer support can differ outside mainland China. Importing a China-market MateBook does not guarantee the buying, licensing or support experience of a standard Windows PC in the United States or another region.
Huawei announced HarmonyOS 6 developer activity in June 2025 and HarmonyOS 7 developer beta activity in June 2026, showing ongoing platform development. Neither announcement establishes universal Windows-app support. Check the regional product page and the exact software build before purchase.
How to decide before buying
- List must-have software. Include versions, plug-ins, drivers, peripherals and authentication requirements, not just application names.
- Classify each program. Mark it as native HarmonyOS, web, virtualized Windows, remote Windows or unverified.
- Confirm the exact hardware. Record model, processor architecture, RAM, storage and HarmonyOS build.
- Ask what “compatible” means. Require evidence that features, updates, graphics, printing and sign-in work—not merely that the program opens.
- Verify licensing. Confirm the Windows license, application seats and any virtualization restrictions.
- Test the failure points. Check GPU use, VPN, printers, cameras, external displays, USB devices and sleep/wake behavior.
- Plan a fallback. Decide whether a conventional Windows PC or remote Windows desktop is acceptable if the VM fails.
Who should buy a HarmonyOS PC?
A HarmonyOS computer makes the most sense when most work is browser-based or available as a native HarmonyOS application, Huawei-device integration matters and occasional Windows use can tolerate a VM or remote session. It is a risky replacement for a Windows PC when Windows-only programs, anti-cheat games, professional GPU workloads, specialized peripherals, Microsoft enterprise management or predictable international support are essential.
Windows-on-Arm PCs offer a different compromise: Windows remains the host operating system and Microsoft provides built-in emulation for many x86 applications. They can still have driver and application limitations, but they do not require Windows software to run as a guest inside HarmonyOS.

Verdict
HarmonyOS PCs may run a substantial number of Windows applications through virtualization, and Chinasoft’s filings show that active compatibility work is real. The evidence does not establish native, universal .exe support or a guaranteed Windows replacement. Buy a HarmonyOS PC for its native ecosystem first; treat Windows virtualization as an app-by-app bridge that must be verified for your hardware, software, licensing and region.
