Yes—AMD graphics cards can run Minecraft’s official ray tracing, but Microsoft documents support for Radeon RX 6000 Series and newer, not every Radeon GPU. You also need Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock Edition), a compatible ray-tracing world or resource pack, and a suitable Windows PC. A compatible card can enable the feature; it does not guarantee smooth performance at every resolution or setting.
What “Minecraft RTX” means on an AMD card
Players often use “Minecraft RTX” to describe any Minecraft graphics with realistic reflections, shadows, and lighting. Strictly speaking, RTX is NVIDIA branding. The official feature in Minecraft for Windows is Bedrock ray tracing, which uses Microsoft’s DirectX ray-tracing capability and can work on supported AMD Radeon hardware. Minecraft’s store page describes ray tracing as requiring a DXR-capable GPU.
That is different from Java Edition shaders. Java players can use third-party shader packs or path-tracing projects, but those are not the same implementation as Bedrock’s official ray tracing; support and performance depend on the shader, mods, game version, GPU, and driver. A Java shader working on a card does not establish official Bedrock ray-tracing support.
Also keep ray tracing separate from newer Bedrock visual previews that improve lighting without requiring ray-tracing hardware. Microsoft says a ray-tracing-capable video card is not required for its Deferred Technical Preview. Those visuals should not be mistaken for the official ray-tracing feature.

Which AMD graphics cards are supported?
Microsoft’s ray-tracing guidance names AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series and higher as suitable hardware. Use that as the practical compatibility line:
| AMD graphics hardware | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Radeon RX 6000 Series | Microsoft’s documented AMD baseline for Bedrock ray tracing. The specific model still affects how demanding settings perform. |
| Radeon RX 7000 Series | Newer than the documented baseline and equipped with hardware ray-tracing accelerators. Verify the exact card and use current drivers. |
| Radeon RX 9000 Series | Newer-generation Radeon hardware with updated ray-tracing capability. Minecraft-specific performance still varies by model and settings. |
| Radeon RX 5000 Series and older | Do not count on official Bedrock ray-tracing support; Microsoft’s ray-tracing guidance does not identify these as supported AMD generations. |
| Integrated Radeon graphics or Radeon Pro cards | Do not infer compatibility from the Radeon name alone. Check the exact GPU, its DXR support, driver, and Minecraft’s current guidance. |
AMD describes the RX 7000 family as having ray-tracing accelerators and provides information on its current Radeon products. Those hardware specifications are useful context, but Minecraft’s own compatibility guidance is the better first check. AMD cards do not have NVIDIA “RTX cores”; compatible Radeon cards use AMD ray accelerators through the DirectX interface.
Edition, Windows, and other requirements
- Edition: Launch Minecraft for Windows, the Bedrock version. The official feature is not a Java Edition graphics toggle, even if you own a bundle containing both editions. See Minecraft’s PC edition information.
- Operating system and GPU: Microsoft’s documented workflow calls for 64-bit Windows and a DirectX hardware-ray-tracing-capable graphics card. For AMD, its guidance names RX 6000 Series and newer.
- System memory and CPU: The documentation lists at least 8 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5 or equivalent CPU for the workflow. Treat these as the documented guidance, not a promise that every system at those minimums will deliver a smooth experience.
- Game and content: The guide describes Minecraft version 1.16.200 or later and ray-tracing-capable content. Use a world or resource pack that supports ray tracing and physically based rendering (PBR) materials.
- Current software: Update Windows, Minecraft, and the Radeon driver. AMD’s driver releases change over time, so use its support resources to find a current driver for your exact card rather than relying on an old version number.
How to enable Bedrock ray tracing
- Open Minecraft for Windows, not Java Edition.
- Choose a world or resource pack made for Bedrock ray tracing. Microsoft’s getting-started guide explains the role of PBR-enabled packs.
- Activate the pack for the world. A compatible pack is essential; ordinary worlds do not necessarily include ray-tracing materials.
- Open the game’s video or graphics settings and enable ray tracing if the option is available. Menu names and placement can change between game releases and preview builds.
- Load the supported world and look for ray-traced lighting, reflections, and shadows. If you just changed packs or graphics settings, reload the world or restart the game.
Bedrock ray tracing is tied to supported content and the Render Dragon graphics engine; it does not automatically transform every world. The Bedrock 1.16.200 notes provide additional context for the feature’s rollout.

Will it run well on your Radeon card?
Compatibility and performance are different questions. A card can meet the hardware requirement yet struggle with a demanding pack at high resolution, long render distance, or high-resolution textures. Ray tracing adds substantially more GPU work than standard Minecraft rendering.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
Actual performance depends on the exact GPU, resolution, render distance, pack and texture size, world complexity, CPU, memory, driver, and any upscaling options available in the game. There is no responsible universal FPS figure for “AMD” as a whole. General Radeon benchmarks from other games do not establish frame rates in Minecraft.
As a buying guide rather than a performance guarantee, an entry-level RX 6000 card may be compatible but is not a promise of high settings. More capable RX 6700 XT- or RX 6800-class cards give more room to experiment with heavier packs; RX 7000 and RX 9000 models are newer options to consider for a new build. For 1080p, a lower-tier supported card may be enough with compromises; 1440p calls for more headroom, and 4K ray tracing is a demanding target even on higher-end hardware. VRAM helps accommodate large textures, but capacity alone does not determine frame rate.
If choosing a new card, compare the exact model’s independent ray-tracing tests at your target resolution, plus its price, power requirements, warranty, and performance in your other games. AMD’s Radeon product listings identify current families, but do not substitute for Minecraft-specific testing. Do not buy an expensive GPU solely for ordinary Minecraft, which can be more CPU-limited than GPU-limited in its general use.

If the ray-tracing option is missing
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the edition. Make sure you launched Minecraft for Windows / Bedrock rather than Java Edition.
- Check the exact GPU. The documented AMD baseline is RX 6000 Series and newer. A Radeon brand name by itself is not enough.
- Check the active graphics adapter. On a system with multiple GPUs, make sure Minecraft is using the discrete Radeon card rather than integrated graphics.
- Update software. Install a current driver for the card and update Windows and the game. A driver update may fix a detection problem, but it cannot make unsupported hardware officially supported.
- Test compatible content. Use a Bedrock world or resource pack designed for ray tracing, activate it for that world, and confirm it uses PBR materials.
- Match the build. If instructions refer to a preview or beta, check whether your game is running that build; settings and features can differ from stable releases.
- Reload and retest. Restart the game after changing the pack or graphics settings, then try a known-compatible world.
If it appears enabled but performance is poor
First compare the same world with ray tracing disabled. Then lower resolution or render distance, remove unusually high-resolution textures, and test a less complex compatible pack or a new world. Temporarily close overlays and recording software. Check GPU utilization, VRAM use, temperature, and power behavior to see whether the card is actually under load or throttling. These steps help isolate the cause; they are not a guarantee that a driver change will solve a hardware or settings limit.

For crashes or visual artifacts, update Minecraft and the Radeon driver, remove custom packs and test a known-compatible one, reset graphics settings, and avoid preview features while diagnosing. If the problem persists, check current Minecraft and AMD support information for a version-specific issue.
Should you choose AMD or NVIDIA?
Both AMD and NVIDIA cards can run Bedrock ray tracing when they meet the game’s requirements; “RTX” is the NVIDIA name, not a requirement for NVIDIA-only hardware. If you are choosing a GPU primarily for Minecraft, compare recent independent results for the exact cards and settings you might use, including resolution and upscaling. The available compatibility guidance does not establish that AMD and NVIDIA deliver equal performance, nor does it prove one is universally faster.
In short: an RX 6000 Series or newer Radeon is the sensible starting point for official Minecraft Bedrock ray tracing. Pair it with Minecraft for Windows and compatible ray-tracing content, then set expectations based on the exact card and visual workload—not on ordinary Minecraft frame rates.
