Yes—Pixel phones now have native call recording in the US. Google’s current Phone app guidance lists Pixel 6 and newer running Android 14 or later, with the latest Phone app. But carrier and regional support still matter, so the option may not appear on every eligible phone. And when recording starts or stops, both participants are notified.
Pixel owners no longer need to assume that call recording is unavailable on their phones. Google documents a built-in option in the Phone app for supported Pixel devices. It can record an individual call or, where available, automatically record calls from unknown numbers or selected contacts. The feature is useful for ordinary calls, but it is not a silent recorder, a guaranteed feature on every US line, or a replacement for a managed business phone system.

This does not include Pixel 5a or earlier under Google’s current eligibility statement. Meeting the model and Android requirements is not a guarantee: Google says availability depends on the device, carrier, and region. If the control is missing, check your setup before concluding that your Pixel model is incompatible.

How to record one call
- Open the Phone app and make or answer a call.
- Wait until the other person has answered.
- Tap Call Assist, then Call Recording.
- To end the recording, tap Call Assist, then Stop.
The Pixel control path is Call Assist → Call Recording; it may not match generic Android instructions that say to tap a standalone Record button. Recording cannot start before a call is answered.
Can Pixel record calls automatically?
Where the settings are available, the Phone app offers two automatic options: calls from numbers that are not in your contacts, and calls involving selected contacts. It is not an unrestricted “record every call” setting.

Automatically record unknown numbers
- Open Phone → More options → Settings → Call recording.
- Under Always record, turn on Numbers not in your contacts.
- Tap Always record to confirm.
Automatically record selected contacts
- Go to Phone → More options → Settings → Call recording.
- Under Always record, tap Selected numbers.
- Turn on Always record selected numbers, tap Add, and choose a contact.
- Tap Always record.
Automatic recording is not available in every market. Check the settings on your own phone rather than assuming the options will be present.
The other person is notified
Both participants are notified when recording begins and when it stops. Google’s supported interface is not a silent recording method, and users should not expect to disable its disclosure. Tell the other person and make sure recording is appropriate before proceeding.

Where recordings are saved—and how to keep them
Recordings are stored on the device. Google says the Phone app does not back them up or save them off-device. To play one:
- Open Phone and tap Home.
- Tap the caller. For an older call, tap History.
- Select the recording and tap Play.
You can share a recording through supported apps, including email or messaging. Before relying on a recording, remember two important limits:
- Deleting the associated call log also deletes its recording. The recording is tied to the call history; do not treat it as an independent file in a general recordings folder.
- Local storage is not a backup. The Phone app does not promise off-device backup. If a recording matters, share or otherwise preserve it using a method you trust, while respecting consent and privacy obligations.
You can set a retention period, where the feature is available, under Phone → More options → Settings → Call recording → Recordings → Delete recordings. Choose a period and tap Confirm. Automatic deletion availability varies by market.
Calls and situations the feature does not cover
- The call must be answered before recording can begin.
- A call cannot be recorded while it is on hold.
- Google says conference calls cannot be recorded.
- The documented controls are for calls handled by the Phone app. Do not assume they record calls in third-party VoIP apps such as WhatsApp, Signal, Teams, or Meet.
Google’s help page does not establish support for every Wi-Fi Calling configuration, headset setup, carrier video call, or language. Do not assume those edge cases work the same way as a standard one-to-one call.

Call Recording is not the same as Call Notes

Call Notes was associated with the Pixel 9 generation before conventional Phone-app call recording broadened to older supported Pixels. Android Authority’s earlier coverage describes that Pixel 9-era route, while 9to5Google reported the broader Phone-app rollout in November 2025. Neither distinction means ordinary recording automatically includes a transcript or AI summary: Google’s current recording help documents recording and playback, not universal transcription or summaries.
US consent and privacy considerations
Google warns users to comply with local call-recording laws and notes that some jurisdictions require consent from all parties. US rules vary, and interstate calls can raise additional questions when participants are in jurisdictions with different requirements. This is not legal advice; do not treat the existence of a recording button as permission to record. The practical, cautious approach is to inform the other person and record only when it is lawful and appropriate.
If “Call recording” is missing
- Check that the phone is a Pixel 6 or newer.
- Confirm it runs Android 14 or newer.
- Update Phone by Google in Google Play and install the latest system update available for the device.
- Open Phone → More options → Settings and look for Call recording.
- Test a standard one-to-one call after it has been answered.
- Restart the phone after updates and check again.
- If the option remains absent, carrier or regional availability may be the reason. Google does not publish a specific Phone app version number or guarantee support on every US carrier.
Installing the latest app and Android version cannot override a carrier or regional restriction. Avoid modified dialers or sideloaded recorder apps as a workaround; they may be unreliable, and their behavior and legal implications can differ.

If you already own a Pixel 6 or newer, check your Phone app before buying anything. For a supported phone and line, native recording offers a straightforward way to save occasional calls without a separate recorder app. But it is disclosed to the other person, may not be available on every carrier or in every region, and is tied to local call history.
If you are considering a Pixel specifically for recording, verify carrier availability and the control on the exact device or line before you rely on it. And if you need team access, centralized retention, searchable records, CRM integration, or compliance administration, the Phone app’s personal-device feature should not be treated as a full business call-recording system.
