To speed up an HTML-to-PDF API, avoid launching a browser for every request: reuse bounded browser capacity, make page readiness and PDF settings explicit, and cache the finished PDF when the complete rendering input is unchanged. Cache versioned static assets separately. The cache key must cover every value that can change the output—and the authorization or tenant boundary—so a fast response is not a stale or cross-user document.

Choose what to cache: PDF bytes, rendered HTML, and static assets

These are separate cache layers with different jobs. A PDF-byte cache avoids both browser rendering and PDF serialization for a repeated request. An intermediate rendered-HTML cache can avoid repeating application-side work, but still requires the browser to create the PDF. Static-asset caching reduces the work browsers do while loading pages, whether or not the resulting PDF is cached.

Layer What a hit avoids Use it when
Final PDF bytes Navigation, rendering, and PDF serialization The same fully specified document request recurs and may safely be reused.
Serialized or rendered HTML Repeated application work that produces the HTML; browser work may still be needed Preparing the document is expensive, but final PDF bytes are not reusable or you need an intermediate representation.
Static fonts, styles, scripts, and images Repeated asset downloads and decoding Assets are shared across documents and have stable, versioned URLs.

For a deterministic document, the final PDF is usually the most valuable cache target: a hit can skip the browser entirely. The Chrome Developers rendering example also demonstrates caching rendered HTML to avoid running headless Chrome again for the work covered by that example. An HTML cache is not a substitute for a PDF cache if PDF generation remains the dominant cost.

Build a cache key from the complete rendering identity

Two requests may use the same HTML string yet produce different PDFs because their data, browser state, media mode, or print settings differ. Construct the key from a canonical representation of every output-affecting input, then hash it. Include at least:

  • Paper format, orientation, margins, scale, page ranges, background printing, CSS page-size preference, and color settings.
  • Readiness policy and relevant browser or renderer version when an upgrade could change output.

Serialize options in a stable order before hashing. Do not use only the page URL: content behind that URL can change, and the same page can render differently for different users. If you cannot reliably identify a data revision or other changing input, use a short expiry or do not cache that result. For personalized or sensitive documents, also define who may read cached bytes and when they must be purged.

Cache static assets with explicit HTTP policy

Use long-lived caching for immutable assets whose URLs change when their contents change. Chrome Developers gives Cache-Control: max-age=31536000—31536000 seconds, or one year—as an example for this policy, alongside fingerprinted filenames. A URL such as app.4f21c9.css can be cached for a long time if a content change produces a new filename.

If an asset’s URL stays the same while its content changes, do not mark it immutable for a year. Use validators such as ETag so a client can revalidate, or set a shorter freshness lifetime appropriate to the update pattern. Google’s PageSpeed v4 guidance describes Cache-Control as defining whether and for how long a response may be cached, and ETag as a revalidation token; that guidance is legacy, so treat it as a description of these headers rather than current performance advice for every deployment. Asset policy does not make personalized PDF responses safe to cache publicly.

Keep browser startup and queueing out of the critical path

A browser-based PDF request typically launches or acquires a headless browser, navigates to the content, waits for readiness, serializes the page to PDF, and closes or releases browser resources. Launching a new Chromium process for every request adds avoidable startup work. Maintain a bounded warm browser pool, reuse browser processes, and give each request a fresh isolated context or equivalent boundary. Clear cookies and storage where appropriate; recycle unhealthy workers rather than letting a bad browser state contaminate later jobs.

Bound concurrency and queue length. An unbounded queue turns overload into long waits and timeouts; unbounded browser creation can exhaust memory and CPU. Set both a navigation deadline and an end-to-end deadline, and return a clear overload or timeout result instead of allowing work to accumulate indefinitely. Pool size is deployment-specific: measure it under the target workload and resource limits rather than assuming a universal worker count.

Approach Control and operational trade-off
Puppeteer Low-level browser control, including PDF and media options; your service owns pooling, isolation, queues, timeouts, and deployment.
Playwright Low-level browser control with documented PDF options; your service likewise owns capacity and operational policy.
Packaged Chromium PDF service HTTP-facing interface can expose controls such as selector waits, timeouts, headers, and animation disabling; deployment footprint and upgrade cadence depend on the package and hosting model.

Choose based on required rendering fidelity, control, isolation, readiness primitives, deployment footprint, upgrade cadence, and observability. Whichever layer supplies the browser, the API still needs explicit limits and cache policy.

Wait for readiness without making every request slow

“Page loaded” is not the same as “document ready.” A fixed sleep can waste time on fast pages and still capture a slow page too early. Prefer an application-owned readiness marker or a selector that appears only when the document is ready. Puppeteer documents waitUntil: 'networkidle2'; Chromium PDF Service documents selector waits, post-wait delays, and timeouts. Network-idle conditions can be useful, but pages with persistent network activity may never become idle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Wait for the application’s ready signal or a meaningful selector when available.
  • Wait for fonts before capture when typography affects line breaks and pagination.
  • Use network idle as a deliberate policy, not a guarantee that every dynamic application is complete.
  • Add a bounded post-wait only for a known asynchronous widget or rendering step.
  • Enforce a maximum wait and report which readiness condition timed out.

Make output deterministic before caching it

Cache reuse only helps if repeated equivalent inputs produce equivalent documents. Set print or screen media deliberately and specify paper size, margins, scale, background handling, page ranges, and color behavior instead of relying on defaults. Fix viewport, locale, and timezone when they affect page content or layout. Disable animations and transitions: Chromium PDF Service warns that capture during animation can leave elements invisible, partially visible, or incorrectly positioned.

Also control dynamic inputs such as current time, random values, rotating content, and personalized data. If the document is meant to reflect a changing value, include that value or revision in the key; if it is not meant to change, freeze or remove the variability before rendering. A browser or template upgrade can change rendering; version those dependencies or invalidate affected cache entries when you deploy such a change.

Example: a small Node.js PDF endpoint with a bounded cache

This illustrative Puppeteer endpoint accepts HTML and a tenant identifier, hashes those along with fixed PDF options, and stores up to 100 generated PDFs in process memory. It is runnable with Node.js and Puppeteer, but its cache is local to one process and disappears at restart; replace it with a shared cache for a multi-instance service. The example assumes authenticated, trusted callers and does not expose an anonymous public rendering endpoint.

npm install express puppeteer
// server.mjs
import express from 'express';
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
import { createHash } from 'node:crypto';

const app = express();
app.use(express.json({ limit: '2mb' }));
const cache = new Map();
const MAX_ENTRIES = 100;
const options = {
  format: 'A4', printBackground: true,
  preferCSSPageSize: true, margin: { top: '12mm', right: '12mm', bottom: '12mm', left: '12mm' }
};
let browserPromise;
function getBrowser() {
  browserPromise ??= puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
  return browserPromise;
}
function put(key, bytes) {
  cache.delete(key);
  cache.set(key, bytes);
  if (cache.size > MAX_ENTRIES) cache.delete(cache.keys().next().value);
}
app.post('/pdf', async (req, res) => {
  const { html, tenantId, dataRevision, templateVersion } = req.body ?? {};
  if (typeof html !== 'string' || !tenantId || !dataRevision || !templateVersion) {
    return res.status(400).json({ error: 'html, tenantId, dataRevision, and templateVersion are required' });
  }
  // Authenticate the caller in production; derive tenantId from that identity, not the request body.
  const identity = JSON.stringify({ tenantId, dataRevision, templateVersion, html, options, renderer: 'puppeteer-pdf-v1' });
  const key = createHash('sha256').update(identity).digest('hex');
  const hit = cache.get(key);
  if (hit) {
    res.set('X-Cache', 'HIT').type('application/pdf').send(hit);
    return;
  }
  let browser;
  let page;
  try {
    browser = await getBrowser();
    const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
    page = await context.newPage();
    page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(20000);
    await page.setContent(html, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2', timeout: 20000 });
    await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
    const pdf = Buffer.from(await page.pdf(options));
    put(key, pdf);
    res.set('X-Cache', 'MISS').type('application/pdf').send(pdf);
    await context.close();
  } catch (error) {
    if (page) await page.close().catch(() => {});
    res.status(504).json({ error: 'PDF rendering failed', detail: error.message });
  }
});
app.listen(3000, () => console.log('PDF API listening on http://localhost:3000'));

Start it with node server.mjs. Send a JSON POST to http://localhost:3000/pdf with html, tenantId, dataRevision, and templateVersion; the response body is a PDF and X-Cache indicates a hit or miss. The sample’s fixed PDF settings are part of its cache identity. If you let callers choose settings, validate them and include the normalized choices in that identity too.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For production, use a shared cache with an expiry and byte-size limits, protect the endpoint with authentication and authorization, derive the tenant from the authenticated identity, limit request size and rendering concurrency, and enforce a total deadline. Treat submitted HTML as untrusted: browser rendering can expose network or file access risks unless the renderer is isolated and outbound access is restricted. Add eviction and invalidation appropriate to data revisions, tenant deletion, and renderer upgrades.

Measure the stages and diagnose the slow path

Record cache hit or miss, queue wait, browser acquisition, navigation, readiness wait, PDF serialization, upload time, output bytes, and failure reason. A total duration alone cannot tell whether the issue is cold browser startup, slow assets, a readiness wait, expensive layout, or storage. Chrome Developers’ example uses Server-Timing to expose render duration; equivalent response metadata or structured tracing can make stage delays visible to callers and operators.

The same page reports client-side First Contentful Paint of 11 seconds and approximately 2.3 seconds for its cached/server-rendered version under the example’s stated emulation setup. These are results from that example, not a production HTML-to-PDF API benchmark or an expected latency guarantee. Measure your own workload, separating cold starts, cache hits, cache misses, and queueing.

Common failures and fixes

  • Requests are slow despite a cache: inspect hit rate and key construction. A volatile timestamp, unstable serialization, or missing data revision can force misses; normalize inputs without omitting meaningful differences.
  • Documents show stale values: confirm that data revision, template version, tenant, and relevant locale are in the key; expire or invalidate affected entries when those inputs change.
  • PDFs differ between identical requests: check fonts, media mode, viewport, timezone, animation, dynamic content, browser version, and implicit PDF defaults. Make output-affecting settings explicit and version renderer changes.
  • Navigation or readiness times out: identify the exact waiting stage, replace broad waits with an application-ready selector where possible, and bound any post-wait. Check for long-lived requests if using network idle.
  • Elements are missing or misplaced: wait for fonts and application readiness, disable motion, and verify the selected print/screen mode and paper options.
  • Memory or queue time grows: cap concurrent work and queued jobs, isolate each request, close contexts on success and error, and recycle unhealthy browser workers.

Or skip the browser setup

If the source is a public webpage rather than arbitrary HTML submitted to your own renderer, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API with PDF capture. It is not a drop-in endpoint for a raw HTML payload: it captures a URL. One GET request can return a PDF, as in this cURL example:

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the shot, along with known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents screenshot tools, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Frequently Asked Questions

Should a PDF cache use an absolute expiry or a time-to-live renewed on access?

Choose based on the document’s freshness and access policy: a fixed expiry bounds how long a generated document remains reusable, while renewal on access can keep frequently requested content cached longer. In either case, define explicit invalidation for changed data and authorization changes.

Can I return a cached PDF with a 304 Not Modified response?

Only when the client has a validator for the exact representation and your endpoint’s conditional-request behavior is defined. ETag can support revalidation, but it does not replace a correct cache key or authorization checks.
