China has moved EV charging much closer to gasoline-like stop times, but it has not eliminated charging delays. BYD unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery and FLASH Charging system in Shenzhen on March 5, 2026. Under BYD’s stated conditions, compatible vehicles can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes.
The system combines a high-rate battery, high-voltage vehicle architecture, thermal management, a charger rated up to 1,500 kilowatts, and station-level battery storage. It is a major reduction in charging time—not a guarantee of an available stall, a universal upgrade for existing EVs, or proof that charging queues have ended.
What BYD actually unveiled
BYD’s announcement describes a complete charging system rather than a battery that works at extraordinary speed by itself. The package includes:

- Second-generation Blade Battery cells and packs.
- A vehicle architecture designed to accept very high charging power.
- FLASH chargers capable of delivering up to 1,500 kW through one connector.
- Battery-storage cabinets that can discharge rapidly during a charging session while drawing power from the grid more gradually.
- Battery conditioning and thermal-management systems intended to support high-rate charging, including in cold conditions.
BYD reported 4,239 FLASH stations as of March 5, 2026, and said it planned 20,000 stations in China by the end of 2026. Both figures are company-reported. BYD’s announcement and its international technical explanation provide the underlying claims.
#1 Best Overall
- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
How fast is it in practice?
| Claim | What it means |
|---|---|
| 10% to 70% in five minutes | Adds 60 percentage points of battery charge. |
| 10% to 97% in nine minutes | Reaches near-full charge without starting at zero or necessarily reaching 100%. |
| Up to 1,500 kW | The charger’s maximum output, not necessarily the power sustained throughout a session. |
| 2 km of range per second | BYD’s range-addition marketing metric under its stated conditions. |
| 20% to 97% in 12 minutes at -30°C | BYD’s low-temperature claim, not a universal winter result. |
Charging power normally tapers as a battery approaches a high state of charge. For that reason, a vehicle does not necessarily receive 1,500 kW continuously. The more useful figures are the complete charging intervals—such as 10% to 70% or 10% to 97%—rather than the peak number alone.
BYD’s earlier 2025 Super e-Platform supported a claimed 1,000 kW, 1,000 amps and approximately 400 km of CLTC range in five minutes. That was a separate first-generation platform, not the same product as the 2026 system. BYD’s 2025 announcement also used the China-specific CLTC range cycle, which should not be compared directly with EPA or WLTP figures.
Why the charger needs a battery of its own
A 1.5-megawatt charging session can demand more instantaneous power than many sites or local grid connections can comfortably provide. BYD’s approach is to use on-site storage as an energy buffer: the grid supplies power to the station at a steadier rate, while the station battery provides short bursts at much higher output.

It also can be depleted or operating at reduced power, so it cannot guarantee the advertised output at every moment.
Which vehicles can use FLASH Charging?
The advertised speed applies only to vehicles designed for the system. BYD has associated its second-generation technology with selected vehicles and configurations across its Yangwang, Denza and Fangchengbao brands, including models such as the Yangwang U7, Denza N9 and Fangchengbao Tai 3. The precise compatibility list, connector arrangement, software limits and market-specific specifications must be checked for each vehicle.

An ordinary EV cannot be transformed into a 1.5-MW vehicle by visiting a FLASH station. A compatible BYD vehicle connected to a conventional 150-kW or 350-kW charger will still be limited by that charger. Even at a FLASH station, the actual rate can depend on the vehicle, battery temperature, state of charge, power sharing, software and station condition.
Will it end EV charging queues?
No. Faster charging can reduce the time each compatible vehicle occupies a stall and improve station throughput, but waiting time is not the same thing as charging time.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Queues can still form when demand exceeds the number of stalls, when several cars arrive together, or when a station is located on a busy holiday route. Offline chargers, maintenance, payment failures, authentication problems, vehicles left connected after charging and power-sharing limits can all create delays. A depleted or malfunctioning station battery could also force the site into a reduced-power mode.
The technology addresses one part of the problem: time plugged in. It does not guarantee that a stall will be available when a driver arrives.
Cold-weather and battery-safety claims
BYD says compatible vehicles can charge from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes at -30°C—only three minutes longer than its stated warm-temperature result. That is notable because cold batteries generally charge more slowly. However, ambient temperature is not identical to battery temperature. Results can change with the vehicle’s starting temperature, preconditioning, wind, snow, state of charge and cabin-heating demand.

BYD also says the second-generation Blade Battery showed no thermal runaway, smoke or fire in a test combining FLASH charging with nail penetration after more than 500 FLASH-charging cycles. This is a manufacturer-reported safety test under specific conditions. It does not establish that the battery cannot degrade, be damaged in a crash or withstand every form of abuse.

What is known about battery life?
The available announcements do not establish long-term real-world degradation after years of repeated 1.5-MW charging. High-rate charging increases the demands on cells, cables, power electronics and cooling systems. The effect on longevity depends on chemistry, temperature, charging frequency, the charging curve and how effectively the pack is managed.
A controlled safety test, a laboratory charging curve and a multi-year fleet-degradation study are different forms of evidence. Buyers should look for warranty terms and independent fleet data rather than infer lifetime durability from the headline charging time.

BYD is not the only Chinese company developing ultra-fast charging. CATL announced its third-generation Shenxing battery in April 2026 and claimed charging from 10% to 35% in one minute, 10% to 80% in three minutes 44 seconds, and 10% to 98% in approximately six minutes 27 seconds. Those are also manufacturer claims, and actual availability depends on vehicle integration and deployment.
| Company or approach | Claim or strategy | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| BYD Blade Battery 2.0 plus FLASH | 10% to 97% in nine minutes | Requires a compatible BYD vehicle and FLASH charger. |
| CATL third-generation Shenxing | 10% to 98% in about 6:27 | Vehicle availability and real-world performance vary. |
| BYD’s 2025 Super e-Platform | About 400 km of claimed CLTC range in five minutes | A distinct earlier, 1-MW platform. |
| Battery swapping | Replaces the battery instead of waiting to charge | Requires compatible packs, vehicles and dedicated stations. |
CATL separately announced sodium-ion battery commercialization and a combined charging-and-swapping strategy, including a plan for 4,000 integrated stations by the end of 2026. These are separate developments, not one unified battery system. CATL’s announcement describes its claims and plans.

China, Europe and the United States
China: This is the primary launch market described in BYD’s announcements, with a planned expansion of the FLASH network.
Europe: BYD communications discussed a 2026 FLASH introduction for the Denza Z9 GT and broader overseas expansion. A rollout announcement does not mean every European market has the same vehicle, charger or service availability. BYD’s European announcement provides the relevant regional claim.
United States: As of August 18, 2026, the reviewed sources did not establish a U.S. consumer launch, U.S. pricing or a U.S. FLASH charging network. Connector standards, vehicle certification, local permitting and service support cannot be assumed from a China announcement.
What EV buyers should check
- Vehicle compatibility: Confirm the exact maximum voltage, current, charging power and supported charger network.
- Charging curve: Compare 10%-to-80% or 10%-to-90% times, not just peak kW.
- Network density: Check whether compatible high-power stations exist along the routes you actually use.
- Cold-weather operation: Ask whether battery preconditioning is required and whether figures were measured from a cold-soaked vehicle.
- Warranty and degradation: Look for coverage and long-term data on repeated high-power charging.
- Infrastructure: Verify connector standards, payment access, station uptime and whether power is shared between stalls.
For current EV owners, this is not a retrofit opportunity. The battery pack, vehicle electronics, cooling system, software and connector must all be designed for the charging rate. For shoppers, the practical question is not “Does this charger reach 1,500 kW?” but “Can this particular car repeatedly achieve useful charging times on a reliable network where I live and travel?”
