Short answer: BYD has announced a Blade Battery 2.0 and FLASH Charging system with striking performance claims, but the headline needs important context. BYD says a compatible vehicle can charge from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes at −30°C, or from 10% to 97% in about nine minutes, using its dedicated charger. The 500,000-km figure is a durability claim—not a promise that every battery is guaranteed to last that long. For European customers, BYD’s published warranty is eight years or 250,000 km, with a minimum 70% state of health, subject to regional terms.
So the technology is real, but neither number describes every BYD with a Blade Battery, ordinary public charging, or a universal ownership guarantee.
The headline, separated into claims
| Headline claim | What BYD’s published information supports |
|---|---|
| “Recharges in 12 minutes” | BYD says Blade Battery 2.0 can charge from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes at −30°C when paired with its FLASH Charging system. It also claims 10% to 97% in about nine minutes under its stated conditions. |
| “Lasts 500,000 km” | BYD has publicized long cycle-life and equivalent-distance claims. Those are not interchangeable with a warranty or a guarantee of capacity retention at 500,000 km. |
| “Blade Cell Battery” | The product is BYD’s Blade Battery: an LFP battery technology and pack design, not a new chemistry called “Blade.” |
| “A new era for EVs” | That depends on compatible vehicles, charging sites, local availability, and real-world performance beyond company-reported tests. |
The relevant announcement is BYD’s March 2026 unveiling of its second-generation Blade Battery and FLASH Charging system. The impressive numbers belong to that combination, not to all vehicles that happen to carry the Blade Battery name. BYD’s announcement is the source for these performance claims.

Blade Battery is BYD’s approach to a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, combining cell shape and pack architecture. Its long, narrow cells resemble blades and are integrated into the pack in a way BYD says helps with packaging and structural strength. BYD also says this arrangement makes more effective use of pack space than conventional LFP block-cell layouts. The precise pack, controls, and thermal-management system can differ by vehicle and generation.

LFP chemistry is valued for thermal stability, cycle durability, and not relying on nickel or cobalt. It usually has lower gravimetric energy density than nickel-rich battery chemistries, though pack integration affects the practical comparison. “Blade” is therefore not a magic property on its own: chemistry, cell design, pack structure, thermal management, and battery controls all matter. See BYD’s Blade Battery overview and its original safety announcement.
What changed with Blade Battery 2.0?
BYD says the second-generation battery has 5% greater energy density and, in specified vehicles, supports more than 1,000 km of range on China’s CLTC test cycle. That is a company claim tied to particular vehicles and a Chinese test standard. CLTC range should not be treated as equivalent to an EPA figure or as the expected range of every Blade-equipped BYD.
The other part of the announcement is FLASH Charging. BYD specifies up to 1,500 kW through a single connector. That is the charger’s maximum rated output, not a promise that every connected car will accept that power. The vehicle must have compatible battery hardware and electrical architecture, and the charging site must actually be able to supply it.

What the 12-minute charge does—and does not—mean
BYD’s reported figures are:
- About five minutes: 10% to 70%.
- About nine minutes: 10% to 97%.
- About 12 minutes at −30°C: 20% to 97%.
These figures concern Blade Battery 2.0 with FLASH Charging under the company’s specified conditions. They are not a 0%–100% charge, a household-outlet result, or a general charging time for existing BYD models. BYD’s announcement is first-party evidence; it should not be mistaken for an independently verified, universal result.

Charging power also changes during a session. Batteries generally accept their fastest charging at lower or moderate states of charge, then the vehicle reduces power as the pack approaches full. That taper protects the battery and means the last few percentage points can take disproportionately longer. For a road trip, a 10%–70% or 10%–80% time is often more useful than a near-full figure. Compare vehicles over the same state-of-charge window and under similar temperature and charger conditions.
Actual results depend on vehicle and battery generation, starting charge, pack temperature, preconditioning, charger capability, site load limits, and availability. A charger rated at 1,500 kW cannot overcome a lower vehicle limit; grid capacity, power electronics, cooling, cables, and site constraints matter too. A queue or shared site capacity can also affect the wait. A headline charge time should not be read as a guaranteed amount of driving range gained in every nine or 12 minutes.
Not every Blade-equipped BYD charges at megawatt power
“Blade Battery” identifies a family of technology, not one identical battery pack in every model. Pack size, voltage system, maximum charging rate, and thermal-management capability vary. Earlier Blade-equipped vehicles should not be assumed to support Blade Battery 2.0 or FLASH Charging.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor scale, BYD lists the European-market SEALION 7 Excellence AWD at up to 230 kW DC charging, with a claimed 30%–80% time of 18 minutes. That is a production-model specification, not a Blade Battery 2.0/FLASH result. Buyers should check the exact model, trim, battery generation, and market rather than infer charging speed from the battery brand alone. The example appears in BYD’s European announcement.
What does a 500,000-km battery-life claim mean?
Four different measures often get collapsed into one “lifespan” number:
- Cycle life: the number of charge-discharge cycles completed in a test.
- Equivalent distance: a calculation that multiplies cycles by an assumed usable driving distance per cycle.
- Capacity retention: how much of the original usable capacity remains after aging.
- Warranty: the period, distance limit, and remedy the manufacturer actually commits to under stated terms.
BYD’s recent European material says testing exceeded 5,000 charge-discharge cycles and equates this to a service life of up to 1.2 million km. Older or other BYD materials have described more than 500,000 km, and some cite even higher distances. These claims cannot be compared responsibly without the test conditions, capacity-retention threshold, and assumptions used to convert cycles into kilometres. They also do not establish that every pack in ordinary use will reach a particular distance.
For European customers, BYD states a Blade Battery warranty of eight years or 250,000 km, with at least 70% state of health, under regional terms covering the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK. Check the warranty applicable to the vehicle’s country and model, including exclusions and any other conditions. A warranty is not a forecast of the battery’s failure point; likewise, a test-life equivalence does not extend the warranty. The detailed terms are in BYD’s warranty announcement.

Safety tests: meaningful, but not a guarantee against fire
BYD has publicized nail-penetration, crushing, bending, furnace-heating, overcharging, saltwater-immersion, and drop tests. It has also described a nail-penetration test in which the battery reportedly avoided fire and stayed relatively cool, as well as a truck roll-over demonstration involving a battery system. These tests indicate the kinds of abuse the design is intended to withstand and support BYD’s safety argument. BYD outlines several tests in its safety materials.
They do not prove that a vehicle cannot catch fire. A laboratory abuse test or demonstration is not a measure of the probability of every crash outcome. Real incidents depend on pack design, impact location and severity, battery state, manufacturing quality, and damage. Nail penetration is a severe test, but it is only one failure scenario; “passed the nail test” should not be translated into “fireproof.”

Before treating a charging or durability headline as relevant to a purchase, check the details for the exact car and country:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Battery generation: Is the vehicle fitted with the original Blade Battery or Blade Battery 2.0?
- Vehicle charging limit: What is its maximum DC charging rate? Do not use the charger’s advertised maximum as the vehicle’s rate.
- Comparable charge window: Compare times such as 10%–80%, not one vehicle’s near-full result with another’s partial-charge figure.
- Temperature and preconditioning: Was the published result measured at a stated temperature, and can the car condition its pack before a fast-charge stop?
- Compatible stations: Are FLASH Chargers actually open and accessible where the vehicle will be driven?
- Warranty terms: Verify years, mileage cap, state-of-health threshold, exclusions, and regional applicability in the relevant warranty document.
- Range standard: Identify whether a stated range is CLTC, WLTP, EPA, ARAI, or another test cycle; these figures are not directly interchangeable.
- Service and repair: Ask how battery-pack diagnosis, repair, and replacement are handled in the local market. A durability headline does not answer repairability or replacement-cost questions.
For fleet operators and charging planners, the vehicle’s accepted power and charging curve are as important as the charger’s nameplate rating. Megawatt charging also requires substantial electrical capacity, cooling, cabling, power electronics, and site approvals. Fast charging could make stops shorter for compatible fleets, but site build-out and utilisation determine whether it makes operational sense.

Is FLASH Charging available outside China?
BYD announced plans for 20,000 FLASH Chargers in China by the end of 2026 and said it intends overseas rollout. Those are company plans, not evidence that a compatible network is already broadly available worldwide. The 1,500-kW specification is presented in a Chinese-market context, and vehicle compatibility, connector and infrastructure standards, local approvals, and deployment must be confirmed market by market.
For a buyer outside China, the practical question is not whether BYD has announced the system, but whether a specific locally sold vehicle supports it and whether compatible stations are operating in the places the buyer needs them. Do not assume a U.S. or European BYD, or an ordinary public fast charger, can deliver the FLASH figures without a market-specific confirmation.
Bottom line
BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0 and FLASH Charging announcement is a genuine advance claim, but the headline compresses several qualifications. The 12-minute result is a BYD-reported charge from 20% to 97% at −30°C on a specific battery-and-charger system; it is not a normal charge time for every Blade-equipped EV. The 500,000-km figure is a durability or service-life claim, not a universal guarantee. For ownership decisions, model-specific charging rates, local charger access, test standards, and the warranty terms matter more than the headline alone.
