Browserless is the better fit when you need infrastructure control, Docker self-hosting, multiple browser engines, or task-focused REST APIs. Browserbase is the better fit when you want a fully managed cloud service built around browser sessions, AI agents, collaboration, and observability. Their pricing also uses different meters: Browserless uses usage units and concurrency, while Browserbase charges around browser hours and plan allowances. There is no independent benchmark in the available evidence, so choose by architecture and workflow rather than an unsupported speed claim.

What Browserless and Browserbase actually provide

Browserless

Browserless describes itself as providing managed headless browsers for automation. Its service exposes Puppeteer and Playwright over a CDP WebSocket, REST endpoints, and GraphQL. It also offers Docker-based self-hosting, so a team can run the browser layer in its own environment instead of relying exclusively on the hosted service.

Its REST surface is aimed at concrete browser tasks, including screenshots, PDFs, page content, downloads, function execution, and website unblocking. BrowserQL adds a GraphQL interface with controls for stealth and browser actions.

Browserbase

Browserbase presents a managed cloud platform for building and deploying agents that browse and interact with websites. Its product set includes browser fleets, Search and Fetch APIs, Runtime, Agent Identity, and a Model Gateway. Applications create browser sessions through its APIs or SDKs, then connect automation clients through CDP. Stagehand is the agent-oriented integration highlighted alongside Playwright, Puppeteer, and Selenium compatibility.

Deployment and data-control trade-offs

When Browserless self-hosting matters

Choose the Docker option when browser traffic must stay inside infrastructure you operate, when network placement is important, or when you need to tune capacity independently of a hosted plan. Self-hosting also gives your team responsibility for browser images, scaling, patching, queueing, and failure recovery. Separate self-hosted pricing or support terms are not stated in Browserless’s published information; confirm those details before treating Docker as a lower-cost option.

When Browserbase’s managed model is preferable

Browserbase removes browser-cluster operations from the application team. That is useful when agents need short-lived sessions, a shared fleet, and centralized inspection without maintaining a browser service. The trade-off is less deployment control than a Docker installation. Specific data-retention, residency, and compliance terms are not established here; obtain the current contractual details if those are requirements.

Browser engines and client integration

Browserless is the stronger choice when Firefox or WebKit is a hard requirement because the comparison identifies all three engines there, while Browserbase is centered on Chrome. For ordinary Chromium automation, both can be driven from mainstream clients.

  1. Choose Puppeteer, Playwright, or Selenium in the application.
  2. Obtain a session or CDP connection URL from the provider’s current dashboard or API.
  3. Connect the client through CDP, then run normal navigation, locator, download, or assertion code.
  4. Set explicit timeouts and close pages and sessions so concurrency is released even after an exception.

Browserless additionally lets you call REST or GraphQL for operations such as a screenshot, PDF, content extraction, or download without building the complete browser workflow yourself. Browserbase’s session-first model is more natural when an agent needs a persistent browser context that can be inspected while it works.

AI-agent workflows and observability

Browserbase is oriented around agents: browser sessions, Stagehand, Agent Identity, Search and Fetch, Runtime, and a Model Gateway are part of its product positioning. Session inspection and recordings help a team understand what an agent saw and did.

Browserless can still serve agents through CDP, REST, GraphQL, and its browser controls. Its advantage is breadth: the same service can support an agent, a test suite, a scraper, a PDF pipeline, or a screenshot job. If your agent framework already speaks Playwright or Puppeteer, this avoids committing to a separate agent abstraction.

Neither vendor has an independent benchmark in the available evidence. Measure your own target sites for startup time, navigation success, challenge frequency, memory use, and session duration before making a performance decision.

Stealth, proxies, and CAPTCHA handling

Browserless controls

Browserless describes BrowserQL stealth routes, CAPTCHA solving, fingerprint randomization, residential and datacenter proxies, and bring-your-own-proxy support. These controls suit scraping and automation that need to vary network identity or browser fingerprints, but configuration and availability should be verified for the specific plan and region you intend to use.

Browserbase controls

Browserbase lists Basic and Advanced Stealth Modes, custom Chromium, proxy rotation, and CAPTCHA solving on paid tiers. Its pricing page also describes custom proxy configurations. Check which capability is included in your plan rather than assuming that a named feature is available on the free tier.

Operational caution

Stealth and CAPTCHA services do not guarantee access to every site. A target can still block an IP, require an interaction your workflow cannot perform, or change its challenge. Test representative domains, document permitted use, and build a fallback for a failed session instead of retrying indefinitely.

Concurrency and pricing

Service and plan Published price Published allowance
Browserless free $0 1,000 units per month; 2 concurrent browsers
Browserbase Free $0/month 3 concurrent browsers; 1 browser hour
Browserbase Developer $20/month 25 concurrent browsers; 100 browser hours
Browserbase Startup $99/month 100 concurrent browsers; 500 browser hours
Browserbase Scale Custom Allowance not stated in the supplied pricing figures

These figures are the vendors’ pricing information accessed on September 29, 2026; plans and limits can change. Browserless consumption is expressed in units and concurrency, so estimate how many units each navigation or task consumes under your workload. Browserbase budgeting starts with browser hours, then adds any applicable API, proxy, or other allowance. Do not convert one meter into the other without measurements from your own traffic.

How to model a real workload

  • Record URLs per job, average session duration, retries, downloads, and peak parallel sessions.
  • For Browserless, compare projected unit consumption and peak concurrency with the plan limit.
  • For Browserbase, compare total browser hours and concurrent sessions, then check API and proxy allowances separately.
  • Include failed navigations and challenge retries in capacity tests, even if they produce no useful output.

Which platform should you choose?

Choose Browserless if you need

  • Docker/self-hosted deployment or tighter control over where browsers run.
  • Firefox or WebKit as well as Chrome.
  • REST endpoints for screenshots, PDFs, content, downloads, or unblocking.
  • One browser platform spanning traditional automation, scraping, QA, and agents.
  • Detailed proxy and stealth choices, including residential, datacenter, or your own proxy.

Choose Browserbase if you need

  • A serverless managed service with no browser-cluster operations.
  • Agent-first sessions, Stagehand, and related Search, Fetch, Runtime, or identity features.
  • Built-in session inspection and recordings for collaborative debugging.
  • A simple plan model based on browser hours and published concurrency allowances.

Run a proof of concept before committing

  1. Use the same five to ten target sites, authentication flows, and browser actions on both platforms.
  2. Capture median and worst-case startup, navigation, and completion times.
  3. Count CAPTCHA or bot-check encounters, blank pages, timeouts, and retries.
  4. Measure peak concurrency and the resulting billable meter.
  5. Verify logging, recordings, data handling, and support requirements with your security team.

Common failure modes and fixes

CDP connection fails

Confirm that the session URL is current, credentials are present, and the session has not expired. Release stale sessions before opening new ones; a concurrency limit can look like a connection error.

The page is blank or times out

Check the target URL outside the automation flow, increase the navigation timeout only when the site is legitimately slow, and capture console or network diagnostics. Treat repeated blank responses as a target-site or session problem, not something a retry loop will always solve.

A bot check or CAPTCHA blocks the workflow

Use the provider’s documented stealth, proxy, or CAPTCHA capability on an eligible plan, then test the exact domain and geography. Do not assume that rotating IPs alone fixes fingerprint or account-history signals.

Costs exceed the estimate

Look for sessions that were never closed, retry storms, unexpectedly long pages, and parallel workers above the planned limit. Recalculate with the correct meter: Browserless units and concurrency, or Browserbase browser hours plus add-ons.

Screenshot API alternative: ScreenshotNeo

ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try for screenshot-only jobs because it removes common consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and starts with a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots.

It is a focused website screenshot API and MCP server rather than a general browser fleet. A GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. You can request full-page captures with lazy images loaded, select one element by CSS selector, set device or viewport and retina scale, apply custom CSS or JavaScript, click before capture, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, block ads or resource types, provide headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, or geolocation, resize images, choose cache TTL, create signed image links, submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call, and query usage.

Or skip the browser setup

Use the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete parameter list. These examples capture Stripe; replace the URL as needed.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Before the shot, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try 1,000 screenshots a month without entering a card.
