Set the browser’s emulated viewport before you capture: choose the exact width and height, then lock device-pixel ratio (DPR), orientation, user agent, touch simulation, zoom, page state and timing. Use a viewport capture when you need only what is visible; use a full-page command when you need the document beyond the fold. Chrome calls its emulator Device Mode; Firefox calls it Responsive Design Mode.
The settings below produce repeatable screenshots for bug reports, responsive-design reviews, documentation and visual regression checks. Browser emulation is an approximation of a handset, not proof of behavior on physical hardware.
Choose the capture you actually need
| Goal | Capture mode | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Show the current screen at a fixed device size | Viewport/visible capture | Preserves exactly what fits inside the emulated window. |
| Document every section of a page | Full-page capture | Includes content below the viewport, including sections revealed while scrolling. |
| Show one card, hero or control | Element/selector capture | Avoids noise and prevents a huge page image from obscuring the component. |
| Compare releases | Repeatable capture | Uses identical dimensions, DPR, browser, state and timing on every run. |
Chrome: configure Device Mode
Open the emulator
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Open DevTools with More tools → Developer tools (or the browser’s DevTools shortcut).
- Select the Toggle device toolbar button. Chrome calls the resulting emulator Device Mode.
Set width, height and device behavior
Choose a device preset, or select the dimensions and enter a custom width and height. Presets may also define device-pixel ratio, user agent and device type. A custom device lets you keep those values explicit instead of relying on a preset that may change between Chrome releases.
- Width and height: control responsive breakpoints and which content is visible.
- DPR: changes pixel density and the resulting image scale.
- User agent: can change server-side or client-side markup.
- Device type: affects pointer behavior and available emulation controls.
- Orientation: switches portrait and landscape layouts.
- Zoom: changes how the emulated page is presented; keep it constant when comparing captures.
Chrome’s rulers and zoom controls help you inspect a layout. A device frame is available in device-specific mode when artwork exists for that device. The paused-in-debugger overlay can be hidden through DevTools preferences if it would contaminate a capture.

Capture only the viewport
- Leave the page at the desired scroll position.
- Open the DevTools capture menu (the menu associated with the device toolbar’s more options).
- Choose the visible-viewport screenshot command, Capture screenshot.
This captures the emulated viewport, not the rest of the document.
Capture the complete document
- Keep Device Mode configured at the target dimensions.
- Open the same capture menu.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
Chrome renders content outside the viewport into one image. Very long pages can be large; check the result for sticky headers, lazy images and animation artifacts.
Firefox: configure Responsive Design Mode
Open Responsive Design Mode
- Open the page in Firefox and open Developer Tools.
- Choose Responsive Design Mode.
- Edit the width and height fields directly, select an orientation, or choose a custom device.
Custom devices can include DPR, a user agent and touch-screen behavior. Selecting a device changes the User-Agent request header and navigator.userAgent, so record the choice when a capture must be reproducible.
Save a visible or full-page image
Firefox offers several paths:
- In the browser Screenshot tool, choose Save visible for the current viewport or Save full page for the complete document.
- In Responsive Design Mode, enable the full-page toolbox button, then capture.
- Open the command line and use
:screenshot --fullpagefor a full document.
The Screenshot tool can save to Downloads or copy to the clipboard. Use a filename deliberately when a capture is part of a test or report.
Capture a component
In Inspector, select the node and choose Screenshot Node. The command line can target a CSS selector:
:screenshot --selector ".pricing-card"
Replace the selector with a stable component selector. This is preferable to taking a full-page image and cropping it, because the browser captures the component at its rendered dimensions.

Control delay, DPR and filename
Firefox’s screenshot command accepts options such as --delay (wait before capture), --dpr (output scale) and --filename. A delay allows menus, hover states or lazy content to settle:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →:screenshot --fullpage --delay 2 --dpr 2 --filename [email protected]
Use a delay only when it represents the state you intend to document; otherwise it can hide a loading problem.
Settings that change the image
Viewport dimensions and breakpoints
Responsive CSS reacts to the layout viewport, so a one-pixel change can move a navigation bar, alter columns or reveal a mobile menu. Record width and height, and do not resize the emulator between comparison runs.
DPR and output scale
DPR determines how many physical image pixels represent one CSS pixel. A higher value can make text and lines sharper while increasing file size. Keep DPR fixed for visual diffs; changing it makes otherwise identical pages appear different.
User agent and touch
A user agent can select different server responses or JavaScript branches. Touch simulation can replace mouse-oriented interactions with touch events and can expose controls that are otherwise hidden. Test both only when your product requirement calls for them.

- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Orientation, zoom and frames
Portrait and landscape trigger different breakpoints. Browser zoom changes the emulated presentation and must be held constant for comparisons. A device frame is presentation chrome, not part of the web page; disable it when the image is intended for pixel comparison.
Network and CPU throttling
Throttling is useful for documenting loading states and performance-related UI, but it is not the default appearance. Record the selected network and CPU profiles and restore normal settings before taking a production reference image.
Page state and timing
Lazy-loaded images, cookie dialogs, hover menus, open accordions, animations and personalized content all alter pixels. Start from a known URL, clear or deliberately set storage, scroll to a defined position, and wait for the intended state. Disable animations in your test CSS when motion is irrelevant; do not hide an animation bug accidentally.
Make captures repeatable
- Write a capture manifest: browser and version, operating system, URL, viewport width and height, DPR, zoom, orientation, user agent, touch setting, network/CPU profile and capture scope.
- Fix the page state: use deterministic test data, set cookies and local storage deliberately, and document whether consent dialogs are present or dismissed.
- Choose a timing rule: wait for a selector, a known delay or a stable network state. Use the same rule for every run.
- Use stable selectors: for component captures, prefer semantic classes or data attributes over generated framework names.
- Name files consistently: include page, viewport, DPR and state, such as
checkout-390x844-dpr3-menu-closed.png. - Verify on hardware when it matters: emulators approximate browser behavior; they do not reproduce every display, GPU, font-rendering or operating-system detail of a physical phone.
Chrome and Firefox: which should you use?
| Decision | Chrome Device Mode | Firefox tools |
|---|---|---|
| Exact viewport | Preset or custom width/height; optional DPR, user agent and device type. | Editable width/height; custom devices can include DPR, user agent and touch. |
| Full page | Capture a full size screenshot. | Full-page toolbox button, :screenshot --fullpage, or browser Save full page. |
| Element capture | Device Mode workflow is centered on viewport and page capture. | Inspector Screenshot Node or :screenshot --selector. |
| Output controls | DevTools capture flow and device-frame option where available. | Downloads/clipboard, filename, delay, selector and DPR options. |
| Emulation caveat | Desktop simulation, not a physical handset. | Simulates selected properties and user-agent behavior, not every hardware characteristic. |
Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
The image is desktop-sized
Confirm Device Mode or Responsive Design Mode is enabled, then check the numeric width and height. Browser zoom and an accidentally undocked DevTools window can make the on-screen preview misleading.

The full-page image is missing lower content
Use the explicit full-page command rather than a visible capture. Scroll once to trigger lazy loading, wait for images, and retry. A page that requires interaction may need a scripted scroll or an intentional delay.
A component screenshot includes overlays
Close consent banners, chat widgets, dev overlays and open menus, or select the target node again in Inspector. For a selector capture, verify that the selector matches one intended element.
Images or fonts differ between runs
Wait for the relevant network activity, keep throttling unchanged, and ensure fonts are loaded before capture. Personalized responses, cache state and animation timing can also change pixels.
The file is unexpectedly huge or blurry
Check DPR and full-page scope. A high DPR multiplies pixels; a low DPR can make fine text soft. Choose the scale required by the destination rather than the maximum available.
Why does a real phone look different?
Desktop emulation cannot fully model hardware, operating-system text rendering, GPU behavior, browser chrome or sensor-driven features. Validate critical results on the target physical device.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I capture at CSS pixels or physical pixels?
Set the viewport in CSS pixels, then choose DPR to match the output required by your review, documentation or test pipeline. Keep both values fixed when comparing images.
Can a full-page screenshot prove that a page works on a phone?
No. It shows a browser-emulated layout. Confirm hardware-specific, operating-system or device-performance behavior on a real handset.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
