Browser session replay helps a team investigate a hard-to-reproduce web bug by reconstructing a user’s interaction with an application and putting that sequence beside technical signals such as errors, logs, or network activity. It is usually not a literal video of the user’s screen: many replay systems rebuild the page from recorded browser events or DOM data, so the result may differ from the pixels the user saw.

For debugging, replay is most useful when it answers what happened immediately before a failure and gives engineers enough context to investigate. It is not a guarantee that every issue will be reproduced or explained, and recording user interactions requires deliberate privacy controls.

What browser session replay records

Session replay is a video-like reconstruction of activity in a web application. Depending on the product and configuration, it can show navigation, clicks, scrolling, and related interface changes. The recording is assembled from browser-side data collected while the session occurs; it should not automatically be treated as a screen recording.

Sentry’s Help Center FAQ, published August 11, 2026, puts the distinction plainly: “Session Replay is not a “screen” recording, but rather a recording of the web browsers’ DOM.” A DOM-based reconstruction can be useful for understanding interactions, but it is not necessarily pixel-perfect and may show deviations from what the user saw. LogRocket likewise describes replay as a reproduction assembled from events recorded by its SDK.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

This distinction matters when diagnosing a visual defect. Replay can help show the sequence of interface changes, but it may not preserve every visual detail, timing nuance, animation, or browser-specific rendering behavior. Treat it as diagnostic evidence, not as an exact video of the user’s display.

How replay helps debug a browser issue

A user report such as “the checkout stopped working” leaves several questions unanswered: which page they were on, what they clicked, whether the interface changed, and what the browser or application logged at that time. A replay can provide the interaction sequence. Correlating it with technical context makes the sequence more useful.

Depending on the product and setup, that context may include errors, console output, network calls, logs, traces, web vitals, or application state. Sentry documents replay alongside web vitals, console output, logs, network calls, errors, and traces. LogRocket documents console and network logging as well as Redux state tracking. These are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every signal is available in every plan, SDK, browser, or session.

Logitech C270 720p Webcam Plug-and-Play Wide Screen Video Calling - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
  • The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
  • C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
  1. Start with the symptom. Identify the reported behavior and the affected page or workflow. A replay is most useful when it can be connected to a concrete incident, rather than reviewed as an isolated clip.
  2. Find the relevant interaction. Look for the user action immediately before the visible problem: a navigation, click, form interaction, or change in page state.
  3. Check nearby technical evidence. Compare the sequence with available errors, console messages, network activity, logs, traces, or application state. A failed request near the interaction may suggest a different investigation than a client-side exception.
  4. Form and test a hypothesis. Use the replay to narrow down conditions to reproduce, then verify the cause through your normal debugging process. A replay can provide clues without proving causality.

Replay is especially helpful when the failure depends on a sequence of actions or a state that a developer cannot easily recreate from a short bug report. It is less conclusive when the reconstruction omits relevant visual or browser behavior, or when the event and technical data needed to explain the issue were not captured.

Choose a replay approach by context, privacy, and operations

There is no universal best replay product established by the capabilities described here. Compare candidates against the debugging evidence your team needs, the privacy controls it can validate, and the operating model it can support. The examples below describe vendor-documented capabilities rather than independent product tests or feature parity across plans and platforms.

Example Documented debugging context Privacy or operating consideration
Sentry Replay can be used alongside web vitals, console output, logs, network calls, errors, and traces. Sentry’s web FAQ describes masking all text and images by default, along with additional server-side scrubbing and replay deletion. Verify the behavior and configuration that apply to your own deployment.
LogRocket Its documentation describes SDK-recorded session reproduction, console and network logging, and Redux state tracking. Its privacy documentation describes controls to sanitize text, inputs, and images and redact frontend state values. Confirm that rules cover the data your application actually handles.
OpenReplay Its documentation describes an open-source session replay stack. OpenReplay describes a self-hosted option, which means the team should account for setup and operation. Its troubleshooting documentation also lists capture and rendering issues specific to its tracker.
PostHog Its documentation describes replay whose contents depend on SDK capture and recording rules. Its documentation describes masking before data leaves the device. Check how SDK capture, browser panels, and masking are configured for the application.

Use these as starting points for a requirements review, not as a ranking. Before choosing, confirm that the product’s current documentation covers your platform, deployment, and required debugging signals; the capabilities summarized here do not establish identical availability across editions.

Plan privacy before enabling capture

Session replay collects user-interaction data. Text, form inputs, images, and frontend state may contain information that should not be recorded or exposed to people who can view recordings. Vendor-provided masking and sanitization controls are useful safeguards, but their existence is not proof that a particular application is safe by default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the debugging need. Decide which interaction and technical context the team needs. Avoid collecting fields or state that do not help answer that need.
  2. Identify sensitive surfaces. Review forms, account pages, private content, and application state for data that should be excluded, masked, or sanitized. Include sensitive content rendered outside ordinary form inputs.
  3. Configure capture rules. Use the chosen product’s controls for masking or excluding elements and sanitizing inputs, text, images, or state values. The exact controls differ by product; do not assume that a setting in one SDK exists or behaves the same way in another.
  4. Review a controlled capture. Inspect what is actually recorded before treating the setup as ready. Check both the reconstructed page and any associated logs or state, since sensitive information can appear in more than one channel.
  5. Set access and retention practices. Decide who in the organization may view recordings and how long they should remain available, according to your requirements.

Sentry’s FAQ describes masking all text and images by default and additional server-side scrubbing; LogRocket documents configurable sanitization of text, inputs, images, and frontend state; PostHog documents masking before data leaves the device. These controls are product-specific and should be verified in the configuration you deploy. No universal legal conclusion follows from these technical controls: notice, consent, retention, and other obligations depend on location, data, configuration, and use case. Assess your implementation with qualified privacy counsel.

Investigate missing or distorted recordings

When a replay is absent or does not resemble the reported page, separate capture problems from rendering limitations. OpenReplay’s troubleshooting guide documents the issues below for OpenReplay; they should not be assumed to behave identically in other products.

  • No recording appears: check that capture is enabled and the tracker initialized successfully. OpenReplay also advises checking for duplicate tracker startup, which can interfere with capture.
  • The tracker does not load: check whether browser extensions block the recording script and whether the browser is supported by the chosen product. A blocked script or unsupported browser can prevent expected capture.
  • Styles or images are missing: replay rendering may depend on access to stylesheets and image resources. Check whether those resources are reachable in the replay environment and whether access restrictions prevent them from loading.
  • Canvas or WebGL content differs: OpenReplay documents canvas limitations. If the affected interface relies on canvas or WebGL, do not assume a DOM-based reconstruction will reproduce it faithfully; compare with other available evidence and a direct reproduction.
  • The recording is present but the cause is unclear: inspect the technical signals available for the same session and time. If the relevant error, request, or state was not captured, replay alone may not settle the diagnosis.

For another product, consult its own current troubleshooting guidance before applying a product-specific diagnosis. Browser support, capture behavior, and rendering constraints are not established as identical across these tools.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a session-replay system. It returns a point-in-time image or PDF of a URL; it does not reconstruct a visitor’s sequence of browser actions. It can be a useful alternative when the debugging question is about the page’s appearance at a URL rather than what a user did during a session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a page-state capture, make a GET request to the API. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the available parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Equivalent Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Equivalent Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. A screenshot can help document a page state, but it is not a substitute for replay when you need an interaction history. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a session replay show exactly what the user saw?

Not necessarily. DOM- or event-based reconstruction can differ from the original pixels, especially for visual details or content that depends on canvas or resource loading.

Does recording a session prove what caused a bug?

No. It can show a sequence and provide clues, but the cause still needs to be tested against the relevant application and browser evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a website screenshot the same as session replay?

No. A screenshot captures a page state; session replay reconstructs a sequence of interactions.
