Broadcom’s April 12, 2022 announcement was a Wi‑Fi 7 chipset and sampling launch, not the retail launch of a Broadcom router or phone. Its five-chip portfolio targeted residential and enterprise access points, plus mobile clients, with headline features including 320 MHz channels, 4096-QAM and multi-link operation (MLO). Broadcom said it was sampling the silicon to early-access partners; finished products, pricing and consumer availability were not announced.

Five chips, three device categories

The portfolio covered both ends of a Wi‑Fi connection: access-point silicon for home and enterprise equipment, and a client chip for mobile devices. Broadcom described it as the “world’s first Wi‑Fi 7 ecosystem solutions”; that is Broadcom’s characterization, not an independently established industry finding. The company’s announcement listed these models and maximum specifications:

Chip Target Announced capabilities
BCM67263 Residential access points Four streams; 6 GHz single-radio operation; up to 11.5 Gbps PHY; up to 320 MHz channels; 4096-QAM; MLO
BCM6726 Residential access points Four streams; single-radio operation selectable among 2.4, 5 or 6 GHz; up to 5.75 Gbps PHY; up to 160 MHz channels; 4096-QAM; MLO
BCM43740 Enterprise access points Four streams; 2.4/5/6 GHz single-radio operation; up to 11.5 Gbps PHY; up to 320 MHz channels; 4096-QAM; MLO
BCM43720 Enterprise access points Two streams; dedicated scanning radio; up to 2.88 Gbps PHY; up to 160 MHz channels; 4096-QAM; MLO
BCM4398 Mobile handsets and other client devices Two-stream Wi‑Fi 7; up to 6.05 Gbps PHY; up to 320 MHz channels; 4096-QAM; client MLO; integrated Bluetooth 5

These are components, not complete routers, enterprise access points or phones. A finished product also needs the surrounding processor and interfaces, antennas and RF design, software and firmware, regulatory approvals, and a manufacturer’s implementation choices. A chip’s stated features alone do not establish that a finished device supports every feature or has been certified for Wi‑Fi 7.

What the Wi‑Fi 7 features are meant to do

Wider channels: up to 320 MHz

Wi‑Fi 7 can use channels up to 320 MHz wide—twice the 160 MHz maximum commonly associated with Wi‑Fi 6 and 6E—when the equipment, available spectrum and local rules allow it. A wider channel can carry more data at once, but requires sufficient contiguous spectrum. It may not be available in every country or practical in every building, and a client that supports only a narrower channel will connect at that width instead.

4096-QAM: more data under strong signal conditions

4096-QAM is a higher-order modulation scheme that can encode more data per symbol than earlier, lower-order schemes. Its advantage depends on a sufficiently strong, clean signal. Distance, walls and interference can prevent a link from using the most demanding modulation, so it is not a constant speed increase across a home or office.

Multi-link operation: use or coordinate more than one link

MLO lets compatible Wi‑Fi 7 access points and clients coordinate multiple links, potentially across bands. Depending on the devices and implementation, links may contribute to aggregate throughput, help maintain a connection when one becomes unreliable, or allow traffic to move to a less congested link. This can improve responsiveness and reliability in some conditions, but does not mean every Wi‑Fi 7 device will continuously combine all bands. The supported modes, firmware, client power constraints and regulatory domain all matter.

6 GHz: more spectrum, with different coverage and rules

Wi‑Fi 7 can use 6 GHz, a band that offers additional spectrum and can make very wide channels more practical. It is not universally available under the same rules: permitted channels and power levels depend on country. Its higher frequencies also generally have shorter range and penetrate walls less effectively than 2.4 or 5 GHz. A device may therefore use 5 or 2.4 GHz when 6 GHz coverage is inadequate. Broadcom’s release discussed Automatic Frequency Coordination (AFC) for certain higher-power 6 GHz operation, but AFC is governed by local regulation and is not a universal router setting or guaranteed feature.

Wi‑Fi 6E already added 6 GHz support, so Wi‑Fi 7’s distinction is not simply access to that band. Its wider channels, 4096-QAM and MLO are additional capabilities. To benefit from Wi‑Fi 7 features, both the access point and client must support the relevant capability; older Wi‑Fi 6E and Wi‑Fi 6 devices do not acquire them through an update.

Why the portfolio splits home, enterprise and client silicon

The two residential chips give router and gateway makers different performance targets. Broadcom positioned the BCM67263 as the higher-rate option, with up to 320 MHz channels and an 11.5 Gbps maximum PHY rate. The BCM6726 was specified for up to 5.75 Gbps and 160 MHz, with single-radio operation selectable across 2.4, 5 or 6 GHz. “Single radio” describes the chip’s radio capability, not a complete tri-band router or mesh system; the final product’s radio count and design depend on its manufacturer.

The enterprise pair reflects a different set of design needs. The BCM43740 offered the same headline maximum PHY rate and channel width as the BCM67263. The BCM43720’s distinctive feature was a dedicated scanning radio that Broadcom said could scan across 2.4, 5 or 6 GHz. In enterprise deployments, a separate scanning capability may support spectrum monitoring without taking a primary data radio offline. The announcement does not specify enough detail to establish particular monitoring features or deployment arrangements.

The BCM4398 addressed the client side. Access-point upgrades alone cannot deliver Wi‑Fi 7-specific benefits to clients that lack compatible radios and software. Broadcom specified two Wi‑Fi streams, client MLO and integrated Bluetooth 5, targeting mobile handsets and related devices. Whether any finished phone uses those capabilities depends on its complete design, regional approvals, driver and operating-system integration, and interoperability testing.

How to read the Gbps figures

Every figure in the table is a maximum PHY rate—the theoretical rate of the wireless physical link under specified conditions—not a speed-test result. PHY rate is reduced by Wi‑Fi protocol overhead and shared airtime; application transfers are further affected by transport and software overhead, congestion, signal quality, client capability and the access point’s implementation.

It is also not internet speed. A broadband plan, WAN port or wired uplink can be the bottleneck even when the wireless link has capacity to spare. In a mesh system, wireless traffic between nodes can consume airtime; a slow Ethernet backhaul can likewise cap end-to-end performance. Broadcom’s up-to-11.5 Gbps access-point figures and up-to-6.05 Gbps client figure should be read as silicon link-rate ceilings, not speeds a single user should expect to see.

Sampling was the availability announced

Broadcom said the five chips were being sampled to early-access customers and partners in mobile, enterprise, service-provider and retail markets. It provided no public chip pricing and directed prospective customers to local sales representatives. The company also named equipment partners including ASUS, NETGEAR, TP-Link, Extreme Networks, Sagemcom, Sercomm, Arcadyan and Technicolor Connected Home in its ecosystem announcement. Those relationships signaled intended product development; they did not mean a finished device was available for consumers to buy on April 12, 2022.

That distinction matters for buyers. Broadcom sells silicon to manufacturers, rather than offering these chips as consumer routers. A Wi‑Fi 7 label on a finished product also does not by itself confirm 320 MHz support, a particular MLO mode, 6 GHz availability in a buyer’s region, or strong performance. Check the exact model’s specifications, firmware, radio configuration, wired ports and regional support.

Where Broadcom fit in the early Wi‑Fi 7 race

The announcement arrived as Wi‑Fi 7 silicon programs were emerging from several vendors. Contemporary coverage also described Qualcomm networking platforms and MediaTek Filogic-based Wi‑Fi 7 efforts. Broadcom’s strategic emphasis was breadth: residential access points, enterprise access points and a mobile client chip in one announced portfolio. Qualcomm and MediaTek pursued their own Wi‑Fi 7 platforms, but this announcement alone does not establish a performance winner or prove which vendor’s products shipped first. Comparisons require finished, independently evaluated products rather than chipset headline figures.

What the announcement meant for different readers

  • Home-network buyers: Wi‑Fi 7 is most relevant when compatible clients, local 6 GHz access and demanding traffic make its extra capacity useful. Consider broadband speed, client mix, coverage, Ethernet backhaul and support policy; a new access point cannot make older clients use MLO or 320 MHz.
  • Enterprise teams: Evaluate client density, roaming, spectrum-management needs, authentication and security, controller compatibility, multigigabit wired uplinks and support lifecycle. The BCM43720’s scanning-radio specification is a potentially relevant design feature, not a guarantee of a specific operational workflow.
  • Device makers: The silicon is only one part of the work. Antenna and RF implementation, power and thermal limits, Bluetooth coexistence, drivers, regional certification and MLO interoperability all affect the final product.

Broadcom’s April 2022 launch was therefore significant as an end-to-end silicon portfolio, not as an immediately purchasable Wi‑Fi 7 system. Its practical impact depended on partners turning the sampled chips into finished, certified devices—and on clients and networks being ready to use the features.
