BricsCAD is the stronger choice for teams that need a broader professional CAD platform; CMS IntelliCAD is the budget-oriented choice for Windows users focused on conventional DWG drafting. Both offer 2D/3D tools and AutoCAD-style workflows, but neither should be selected on a generic “DWG compatible” claim alone. Your edition, operating system, add-ins, object types, plotting standards, and actual files determine whether a switch will work.
At a glance
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Low-cost conventional 2D drafting | CMS IntelliCAD | Its US pricing page lists a PE option at $279.95 per unit; it also offers subscription and perpetual-labelled options. |
| Cross-platform desktop CAD | BricsCAD | Bricsys documents Windows, macOS, and Linux support. |
| General 3D modeling and broader automation | BricsCAD Pro or above | Higher levels add broader solid/surface tools and APIs; confirm individual features by edition. |
| Dedicated BIM workflow | BricsCAD BIM or Ultimate | These are purpose-specific levels with documented BIM authoring and project features. CMS advertises BIM interoperability, but that is not automatically equivalent to a dedicated authoring environment. |
| Mechanical drafting tools | BricsCAD Mechanical or Ultimate | BricsCAD documents mechanical drafting tools and AutoCAD Mechanical-compatible DWG support. |
| Civil, survey, or point-cloud workflows | BricsCAD Pro or above | Its feature matrix documents civil and point-cloud tools; equivalent CMS capabilities are not established by the reviewed public materials. |
These are starting points, not universal winners. Compare the CMS package you would actually buy with the specific BricsCAD level you need, rather than comparing CMS PE with BricsCAD Ultimate as if they were equivalent products.
Two different product strategies
BricsCAD is a product family: Lite, Pro, BIM, Mechanical, and Ultimate. Lite is the relevant place to begin for mainly 2D work; Pro adds broader 3D and automation capability; BIM and Mechanical target specialist workflows, with Ultimate combining capabilities from across the range. BricsCAD offers perpetual and subscription licensing, and documents network licensing as well. Details and entitlements depend on license type and region. See the BricsCAD licensing guide.
CMS IntelliCAD is positioned as an affordable, general-purpose AutoCAD-compatible CAD product family. Its materials describe 2D and 3D drafting, rendering, LISP and other programming interfaces, plus file interoperability that includes BIM-related formats. CMS also advertises standalone, lease, USB-dongle, network, and subscription arrangements. It is primarily a Windows desktop option according to its product materials.

The distinction matters: CMS is not “only 2D,” and BricsCAD is not just a low-cost drafting clone. CMS advertises 3D tools, but similar feature labels do not establish equal depth, performance, or behavior. BricsCAD’s advantage is a more clearly segmented professional platform; CMS’s is its lower entry price for general CAD use.
DWG and AutoCAD compatibility: test the whole workflow
Both products work with DWG and DXF, but file format support is only one layer of compatibility. A drawing may open and save while losing editability or behaving differently in dynamic blocks, annotative objects, fields, data links, custom entities, or proxy objects. Plot output can also change because of fonts, plot styles, printer configurations, and page setups.
BricsCAD’s V26 compatibility page lists direct opening and saving for DWG formats from R11/R12 through DWG 2021, including DWG 2018. Its feature matrix documents common commands and aliases, CUI support, full LISP, and—at Pro and above—COM, VBA, .NET Core, and BRX-related extensibility. Check the V26 drawing-format table and feature comparison for edition detail.
CMS advertises native DWG support across older and current versions, as well as compatibility features for menus, fonts, scripts, symbol libraries, LISP, SDS, IRX/DRX, VBA 7.1, and .NET APIs. However, its public materials describe the latest DWG version inconsistently: one page refers to current versions and “2026,” another uses “same as 2018,” and the v11.1 brochure specifies support through 2018/20. Do not treat “DWG 2026” as a confirmed save schema without checking the exact CMS release and testing it. See CMS’s DWG/DGN page, product overview, and v11.1 brochure.
Also distinguish API support from add-in support. Sharing a LISP, .NET, or other API label does not guarantee that every AutoCAD plug-in will run: it may depend on specific functions, object models, or a particular edition. Vertical-product objects from Civil 3D, AutoCAD Mechanical, or Architecture deserve especially careful testing.

2D drafting: choose by production fit, not command count
For routine drafting—lines, polylines, hatches, dimensions, blocks, attributes, layers, layouts, viewports, and external references—either product may be sufficient. The more consequential questions are whether your drawings remain editable and whether the complete sheet set plots correctly.
Compare the workflows you actually use: Xref paths and binding; dynamic blocks and attributes; annotative text and dimensions; PDF underlays; tables and fields; page setups; CTB/STB plot styles; PC3 printer configurations; custom SHX fonts; batch publishing; and any data extraction or cleanup routines. BricsCAD’s published matrix lists core drafting, annotation, reference, layout, plot, publishing, and PDF features. CMS advertises ribbon and traditional menu/toolbar interfaces alongside drafting and interoperability tools. Those feature lists are useful for screening, but they cannot tell you whether your office template and drawings behave as expected.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If staff rely on command-line habits, menus, aliases, or LISP scripts, include those in a pilot. Familiarity can reduce retraining, but small differences in prompts, variables, dialogs, or supported functions can still disrupt a production routine.
3D, BIM, mechanical, and civil work
3D modeling and visualization
BricsCAD Pro and higher levels document ACIS-based solid modeling, surface tools, direct and parametric modeling, section planes, drawing views, rendering, materials, and point-cloud tools. The published feature matrix also lists links to visualization tools such as Twinmotion and Unreal in relevant levels. CMS advertises 3D tools, surfaces, realistic rendering, and ACIS solid modeling in its brochure, as well as STEP and IGES exchange in newer product materials.
Do not infer equivalence from “3D support” or a shared exchange format. Test the models and operations you need: editing solids, handling imported geometry, generating drawing views, material/render workflows, and exchanging STEP or IGES files with downstream users.

BIM and AEC
BricsCAD BIM and Ultimate provide a dedicated BIM path. Bricsys lists IFC import/export, IFC4x3 export, RVT/RFA import, RVT export, building elements, structural modeling, project databases, components, and point-cloud workflows in the relevant levels. CMS advertises IFC and Revit-file interoperability, including BIM underlays and RVT/RFA exchange. That establishes useful exchange capabilities, not parity with BricsCAD’s dedicated BIM authoring and project workflow.
Decide whether you need to view or coordinate models, use a Revit underlay, exchange IFC, classify and author BIM elements, manage project information, produce construction documents, or turn point clouds into a model. If authoring and information management are central, evaluate BricsCAD BIM directly and validate CMS against the exact deliverables your project requires.
Mechanical design
BricsCAD Mechanical and Ultimate document mechanical drafting features such as parts references and lists, balloons, power dimensions, welding symbols, surface texture, feature-control frames, and datum identifiers. CMS’s reviewed materials establish general CAD, 3D modeling, exchange, and programming capabilities, but do not establish an equivalent dedicated mechanical toolset. A mechanical team dependent on AutoCAD Mechanical objects or standards should prioritize testing BricsCAD Mechanical; test CMS only after confirming the precise commands, object types, templates, and downstream behavior needed.
Civil, survey, and point clouds
BricsCAD Pro and above document civil tools including TIN surfaces, civil points, volume surfaces and reports, alignments, profiles, corridors, GIS data, labels, and sections, alongside point-cloud alignment and classification tools. CMS materials reviewed here mention point-cloud attachment and general interoperability, but do not document an equivalent civil-design feature matrix. If these functions are production-critical, treat BricsCAD as the more substantiated candidate and verify both products with representative project data.

BricsCAD documents desktop support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. CMS’s desktop product materials identify Microsoft Windows; a separately advertised ETOOLBOX viewer is available for Android and Windows, but a viewer is not a full editing application. For a mixed-OS office, BricsCAD is the clear candidate to evaluate. In a Windows-only organization, platform support may be less important than cost, compatibility testing, and deployment options.

Both vendors describe licensing options beyond a single-seat purchase. BricsCAD documents perpetual and subscription licensing, maintenance, network multi-user licensing, and academic licensing. CMS advertises standalone and network options, time-limited leases, USB-dongle licensing, and subscriptions. Check the current terms for updates, support, transfer or borrowing rights, offline use, and network deployment before budgeting.
Pricing: CMS has published US price signals; compare like with like
CMS’s US pricing page listed the following figures when reviewed on August 18, 2026:
- CMS IntelliCAD PE: $279.95 per unit
- PE Easy Run: $249.95 per year
- PE Easy Run Perpetual: $599.95 per seat
- ETOOLBOX CAD Viewer: $0 per seat (a viewer, not a full editing replacement)
These are US-listed prices, not a universal quote. Check the current CMS pricing page and confirm what the exact license includes. “Perpetual” does not by itself establish whether future major versions, maintenance, or support are included.
BricsCAD offers perpetual and subscription licensing, but no directly comparable price is given here: the cost depends on the level, license type, region, and entitlements. Check the official Bricsys site before comparing totals. A fair cost comparison includes the required edition, number of seats, updates, support, training, migration effort, and any network licensing—not just one product’s entry price.

Run a migration proof-of-concept before committing
Use non-sensitive copies of real work, not just a clean sample drawing. Include a typical 2D drawing, a large Xref-based project, a multi-layout sheet set, dynamic blocks and attributes, annotative text and dimensions, custom fonts and plot files, and a 3D model. Add point-cloud, BIM/IFC/Revit, or mechanical files if those matter to your team, plus every production LISP, VBA, .NET, ARX/BRX, or other add-in you rely on.
- Open the source DWG in the candidate application and note warnings, missing references, fonts, or proxy objects.
- Exercise the real workflow: edit key geometry and attributes, run automation, switch layouts, and resolve Xrefs as your team normally would.
- Save a copy in the target application, then reopen it in the incumbent CAD system. Check whether important objects remain editable and whether data has changed.
- Plot the same sheets to PDF. Compare lineweights, text, hatches, scales, viewports, page sizes, and page setups against the approved output.
- Test add-ins separately. A file opening successfully says nothing about whether a third-party application or API-dependent routine will work.
- Record severity: cosmetic difference, manageable workaround, production blocker, or data-loss risk. Include retraining and workflow friction in the decision.
Do not make a production migration based on file opening alone. A representative round trip and plot test is the practical way to discover whether compatibility is sufficient for your standards and deliverables.
Which should you choose?
- Freelancers and small drafting firms: Start with CMS IntelliCAD if the work is conventional 2D DWG drafting, you are on Windows, and a low upfront cost or perpetual-labelled option matters. Pilot your templates, plot settings, and scripts first.
- Cross-platform teams: Evaluate BricsCAD because Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop support is documented.
- 3D-focused general CAD users: Compare CMS’s advertised 3D tools with BricsCAD Pro on actual models and exchange tasks; choose by demonstrated workflow fit, not feature labels.
- Architecture and BIM teams: Evaluate BricsCAD BIM or Ultimate for authoring-heavy work. CMS may suit a narrower drafting or interoperability role, but verify authoring needs and deliverables.
- Mechanical designers: Prioritize BricsCAD Mechanical or Ultimate if dedicated mechanical tools or AutoCAD Mechanical compatibility matter. Validate object behavior with your downstream partners.
- Civil, survey, and point-cloud users: BricsCAD Pro and above have the more clearly documented specialist toolset in the materials cited here.
- AutoCAD plug-in-heavy organizations: Choose neither without testing each essential plug-in and custom object. API names alone are not proof of compatibility.
- Occasional viewers: CMS lists ETOOLBOX CAD Viewer at no cost, but it does not replace an editing CAD license.
Verdict: For professional breadth, specialist workflows, and cross-platform deployment, BricsCAD is the stronger platform. For budget-conscious Windows users doing ordinary DWG drafting, CMS IntelliCAD is the more compelling value candidate. The deciding evidence should be a successful test of your files, plots, automation, and add-ins—not a blanket compatibility claim.
