If Brave on Android shows a second Back command instead of Forward, re-enable the bottom toolbar: Settings > Appearance > Enable bottom toolbar. The workaround applies to a reported regression affecting the top-toolbar layout. Brave has acknowledged reproducing the problem, but its Android 1.96.60 release notes do not confirm a fix.
What the bug looks like
The problem occurs after the address bar and navigation controls have been moved to the top by disabling Brave’s bottom toolbar. You open a page, follow a link, press Android’s system Back control, and then open Brave’s three-dot menu. Instead of a Forward command that returns to the page you just left, the menu shows another Back action.
Android’s own Back button or gesture already handles backward navigation, so the duplicate menu item is particularly confusing. The reported symptom is not that every Brave installation loses history navigation; it is tied to this toolbar configuration.
Who is affected
The Brave Community report describes the regression after the Android 1.96 update and lists Brave 1.96.59. A PiunikaWeb report dated October 2, 2026 describes the same top-toolbar symptom. Reports also mention the issue on 1.96.60, released September 30, 2026, but there is no evidence that every device or installation is affected.

| Toolbar setup | Reported menu behavior | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom toolbar enabled | Forward action is reported to appear normally | Use this layout as the immediate workaround |
| Bottom toolbar disabled; controls at top | Forward may be replaced by a second Back action | Re-enable the bottom toolbar |
How to reproduce it
- Open Brave on an Android phone or tablet.
- Open Settings > Appearance.
- Turn off Enable bottom toolbar, placing the toolbar at the top.
- Visit a website and tap a link to open another page.
- Press Android’s system or device Back control.
- Open Brave’s three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Check whether the menu contains a second Back action instead of Forward.
The expected result is a Forward command leading to the page you left. The reported actual result is another Back command.
Immediate workaround: restore the bottom toolbar
- Open Brave’s three-dot menu and choose Settings.
- Tap Appearance.
- Turn on Enable bottom toolbar.
- Return to browsing, open a link, go back once, and check the three-dot menu.
Brave user reports say the Forward action returns when the bottom navigation toolbar is enabled. Moving the toolbar is reversible and does not require uninstalling the browser or changing Android navigation settings.

Is there a confirmed fix?
Brave’s official release listings show Android 1.96.59 (September 24, 2026) and 1.96.60 (September 30, 2026). The Android notes shown for those releases do not identify a fix for this specific top-toolbar Forward regression. A dated discussion reports that some users still saw the problem on 1.96.60 and references Brave issue #59326.

What Brave has acknowledged
Mattches, a Brave team member, replied in the official Brave Community report on September 25, 2026: “Thank you for reporting this. I’m seeing the same thing.” The report connects the regression with issue #59205 and suggests that an earlier request may have used “backward” where “forward” was intended, potentially overwriting the Forward mapping for the top-toolbar layout. That is a suspected implementation error described in the report, not a published Brave postmortem.
Why gestures are not a dependable substitute
Some Android users may try edge-swipe navigation instead of the missing menu command. A separate Brave issue says Chromium’s right-edge-goes-forward gesture-navigation flag expired and that Android’s Back gesture can override forward navigation. Gesture behavior therefore varies by Android navigation mode and browser implementation; it should not be treated as a universal replacement for the Forward menu item.

If the workaround does not help
- Confirm the exact Brave version in Brave’s app settings and note your Android version.
- Install any newer build available through the standard app store or Brave’s normal update channel.
- Search existing Brave Community and GitHub reports before opening a duplicate.
- When reporting, include the toolbar position, whether you use buttons or gesture navigation, the reproduction steps, and the exact build numbers.
Do not downgrade or sideload an older build based on these reports; the cited evidence does not establish a supported downgrade procedure.
Bottom line for top-toolbar users
This is a configuration-specific Brave Android regression: with the bottom toolbar disabled, the top-toolbar menu can show Back twice and omit Forward. Re-enabling Enable bottom toolbar is the documented immediate workaround. Brave has confirmed seeing the behavior, while release notes through 1.96.60 do not confirm that it has been fixed.
