Brave 1.82.166 was an official Brave Release-channel build released on September 10, 2025. It used Chromium 140.0.7339.133 and included small Leo fixes, a Chromium upgrade, and an Android-specific tab-switcher icon fix.
It is now a historical, outdated version. Unless you need it for testing or archival work, update to the latest official Brave Release rather than installing or continuing to use 1.82.166 for routine browsing.
What is Brave 1.82.166?
Brave 1.82.166 is a real version of the privacy-focused Brave browser. The number identifies Brave’s own product release; it is not the Chromium version.

- Release date: September 10, 2025, according to Brave’s release announcement
- Chromium base: 140.0.7339.133

What changed in version 1.82.166?
Desktop changes
The published desktop notes describe this as a maintenance release rather than a major redesign or feature release. The listed changes were:
- Leo response table headers were corrected so they display in bold.
- Escaped HTML tags were removed from Leo responses.
- The Chromium engine was upgraded to version 140.0.7339.133.
These are the changes documented in the release notes. The notes do not establish that 1.82.166 introduced a broad new Brave feature set.
Android-specific change
The Android release also included a fix for faded icon colors in the tab-switcher menu. This fix should not be attributed to Windows, macOS, or Linux desktop builds.

Is Brave 1.82.166 still safe or recommended?
It should be treated as outdated and is not recommended for ordinary browsing. Brave’s release channel has moved substantially beyond this build. For example, the official release page listed desktop version 1.93.129 dated July 30, 2026, when checked for this guide. That places 1.82.166 more than ten version trains behind the listed release, although individual platforms and distribution channels may update on different schedules.
Being old does not by itself prove that the official installer was malicious, nor does the release note establish a specific CVE affecting this exact version. The practical issue is that an old browser does not receive the later Chromium security, compatibility, privacy, and bug fixes that newer releases provide. Use the latest official Release build whenever possible.

How to update Brave
For a normal existing installation:
- Open Brave and choose About Brave from the main menu.
- Allow Brave to check for and download updates.
- Restart the browser when prompted.
- Open About Brave again to confirm the installed version.
If Brave cannot update normally, download the current installer from the official Brave download page. Brave’s installation guidance covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.
Do not assume that reinstalling preserves every local browser item. Before reinstalling, synchronize or back up important bookmarks and verify how your passwords, extensions, settings, wallets, and other profile data are stored.

Can you still download Brave 1.82.166?
Historical release assets may remain available through Brave’s public release history or Brave-maintained repositories, but the standard Brave download page is intended to provide the latest version, not an old build. Availability can vary by operating system, processor architecture, package format, region, and distribution channel.
A historical installer may be appropriate for reproducing an old bug, testing website compatibility, preserving a software environment, or conducting archival or forensic work. It is a poor choice for everyday browsing because it may lack later security fixes, fail on current websites, or have unreliable update behavior.
If you need the old build, prefer official Brave or Brave-maintained sources such as the Brave browser release history. Avoid unofficial “old versions” sites and third-party repackaged installers. Run an old browser in an isolated test environment rather than replacing a current daily-use installation with 1.82.166.

Troubleshooting failed updates
Brave does not find an update
- Restart Brave, then check About Brave again.
- Confirm that the device has a working internet connection.
- Check whether antivirus software, endpoint security, a firewall, or an organization’s policy is blocking the updater.
- On Linux, use the distribution-appropriate Brave repository and package instructions rather than a random download.
The device is managed by an employer or school
Managed-device policies can control browser versions and prevent normal updates. Contact the administrator instead of forcing an installation or replacing the browser with an old installer.
You need to reinstall
Back up or synchronize essential bookmarks and settings first. Reinstallation does not guarantee preservation of every profile item, particularly passwords, extensions, wallets, or locally stored data. Do not install 1.82.166 merely because a current update failed; use the current official installer or resolve the updater restriction.
Brave 1.82.166 compared with newer releases
| Item | Brave 1.82.166 | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Channel | Release | It was a normal stable-channel build, not Beta or Nightly. |
| Release date | September 10, 2025 | This is a historical date, not a current release date. |
| Chromium base | 140.0.7339.133 | This is separate from Brave’s 1.82.166 product version. |
| Status | Outdated | Use a current official Release build for routine browsing. |
For current versions and channel information, consult Brave’s release-notes page or the Brave version dashboard. Current-version pages change over time, so any comparison should be read with its check date in mind.
Bottom line
Brave 1.82.166 was a genuine Release-channel browser build from September 10, 2025. Its main documented changes were Leo formatting corrections, the Chromium 140.0.7339.133 upgrade, and an Android tab-switcher icon fix. It remains useful as a historical reference or controlled test build, but ordinary users should update through Brave or install the latest version from Brave’s official website.
