Blumhouse did partner with Meta on AI video—but the October 17, 2024 announcement described a filmmaker-feedback pilot, not a deal to make a full AI-generated horror movie. Selected filmmakers tested Meta’s experimental Movie Gen tools, made work incorporating generated clips, and shared feedback with Meta’s researchers.
What the Blumhouse–Meta partnership involved
Meta said Blumhouse selected filmmakers to try Movie Gen while it was still in development. The aim was to learn how working creatives might use the models and to gather feedback on the tools and their interfaces before a broader release. Meta described the arrangement as an early dialogue with the creative community, not a feature-film production agreement.
The distinction matters: generated clips were incorporated into larger pieces, but the announcement did not say Blumhouse was producing a feature with Movie Gen, licensing the system for a specific movie, or replacing conventional filmmaking. Meta’s description of the pilot is in its October 2024 announcement.

Meta named director Aneesh Chaganty, the Spurlock Sisters, and Casey Affleck as participants selected by Blumhouse. Chaganty directed Searching and Run. Their participation was described as testing and feedback, not as each filmmaker directing a fully AI-generated movie.

Meta highlighted Chaganty’s short i h8 ai in its Movie Gen research materials. Those materials also showcase experimental videos by creators Paige Piskin and Eric Rubens; they are part of the broader showcase, not among the three participants Meta named for the Blumhouse pilot.
What Movie Gen was designed to do
Movie Gen was a family of media foundation models, rather than just a text-to-video button. Meta presented the research suite as supporting several kinds of creation and editing:

- Generate video from text: Create a scene from a written description.
- Edit existing video: Use text instructions to alter elements or add effects, such as fog.
- Personalize video from an image: Animate a person from an image while aiming to preserve identity and motion.
- Generate audio: Create sound effects, background audio, and music to accompany visuals.
Meta said the research models could generate 1080p HD video with corresponding audio tracks. That is a company-described capability, not an independent performance result or a guarantee that every output is consistent or ready for production. Meta’s technical overview and research hub show examples such as changing objects, creating scenes and creatures, and adding soundtracks.

In its account of the pilot, Meta said the filmmakers saw Movie Gen as a possible thought partner: a way to explore visual direction, test mood, and encounter ideas they might not have prompted deliberately. They also explored generated sound effects and background audio. These are participants’ impressions as reported by Meta, not an independent assessment of the workflow.

That use case is more modest than replacing a crew. A generated image or clip can help explore a tone or creature concept before a shoot, while a completed production still requires decisions about performance, camera work, continuity, editing, sound, and how the material fits the rest of the work. Meta itself said Movie Gen was not a replacement for hands-on filmmaking experience.
What the announcement did—and did not—establish
- Established: Selected filmmakers tested Movie Gen and gave feedback; Meta showcased experimental work that included AI-generated clips.
- Not established: A full-length Blumhouse film made with Movie Gen, a studio-wide adoption, or a production deal for a named feature.
- Not disclosed in the announcement: Contract terms, filmmaker compensation, commercial-use rights, or detailed training-data information.
The announcement also did not show that the pilot resolved general concerns about frame-to-frame consistency, character continuity, likeness and consent, copyright, labor, or disclosure. Those remain questions to assess for any specific production; the available materials do not establish that Blumhouse encountered or solved a particular failure.

Could the public use Movie Gen?
Not through a generally available Movie Gen product at the time of the 2024 pilot announcement. Meta said it did not plan to incorporate Movie Gen into public products until the following year. The announcement did not provide a public subscription, API, or production-ready commercial license for the exact pilot system.

Why Blumhouse is an interesting test partner
Blumhouse is known for horror and genre productions, where visual mood, creatures, surreal changes, and unusual perspectives can be useful subjects for rapid concept exploration. That makes the collaboration an interesting setting for testing creative tools, but Meta did not give a specific reason for choosing Blumhouse or say that horror is easier for AI to generate.
Blumhouse’s wider work in film, television, immersive projects, and virtual reality—including activity in Meta Horizon—is separate from the Movie Gen pilot. The company describes those activities on its about page; their existence does not turn the test program into a film-production deal.
What the pilot may signal for Hollywood
The more defensible takeaway is that an AI company sought feedback from filmmakers while shaping a research-stage creative tool. If such systems become useful in professional workflows, early applications could include previsualization, visual experimentation, and testing tone before principal photography. That is an implication, not evidence that Blumhouse adopted Movie Gen across its productions.

For studios and creators, technical output is only one part of the decision. They would also need workable control over continuity and revisions, clarity about rights and consent, disclosure practices, and agreement about how the tools affect creative labor. Meta’s public announcement did not settle those questions.
