Bluesky already supports video. Its latest confirmed change, announced in June 2026, raised the maximum upload size from 100 MB to 300 MB. Reports in August describe a possible test of videos up to 10 minutes, but Bluesky has not officially confirmed that as a general feature. The established duration limit remains three minutes unless your account has access to the reported beta.
What changed in Bluesky’s latest video update?
The confirmed update increased the maximum video file size to 300 MB, up from 100 MB. Bluesky’s announcement describes a larger upload allowance; it does not confirm that the maximum video length changed at the same time. Bluesky’s June 4, 2026 announcement is the source for the size increase.
That distinction matters: file size and duration are separate limits. A longer or higher-quality video generally takes more storage, but a larger file allowance does not by itself establish a longer runtime.

- September 2024: Bluesky rolled out native video posting to all users. At launch, posts could include one video of up to 60 seconds. Bluesky’s rollout announcement and initial-limit announcement document the launch.
- March 2025: Version 1.99 raised the maximum duration to three minutes. Bluesky’s announcement confirms the change.
- June 2026: The maximum file size increased from 100 MB to 300 MB.
- August 2026: Users reported a beta test for videos up to 10 minutes, along with faster uploads and a more accurate progress indicator. Those reports are not an official confirmation of a broad release.
Are 10-minute videos available on Bluesky?
Possibly for some beta users, but the evidence is not strong enough to say that everyone can upload 10-minute videos. Reports dated August 13–15 describe the feature appearing through Settings > Beta Features. Treat the reports as an indication of testing, not a published platform-wide limit. Bluesky’s confirmed limit is three minutes: the company still referred to three-minute videos in its January 2026 product update. If your account has no beta option or rejects a longer clip, use the three-minute limit as the dependable guide. Beta controls and staged rollouts can vary by account and client.

How to post a video on Bluesky
- Open the post composer in the Bluesky app or on the website.
- Choose the video or media control. In earlier instructions, Bluesky described a film-strip icon alongside the photo and GIF controls; placement and labels may vary by client version.
- Select a video from your device. On desktop, you can also drag and drop a file into the composer.
- Add your post text and any available accessibility information, such as alt text for media.
- Wait for the video to upload and process, then publish the post.
The app-version 1.91 requirement mentioned during the 2024 rollout was specific to that launch period; it is not a verified current prerequisite. If you do not see the control, update the app or refresh the website before troubleshooting further.

If a video upload fails
- The file is too large: Keep it within the confirmed 300 MB limit. If needed, export at a lower bitrate or compress the file. Compression can reduce quality, so review the result before posting.
- The clip is too long: Unless your account demonstrably has the longer-video beta, keep it at or below three minutes. A 10-minute limit has not been confirmed for general use.
- The format or encoding causes trouble: Bluesky’s available announcements do not establish a complete codec specification. As a practical fallback, try exporting to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio; this is a general compatibility suggestion, not a guarantee that every such file will work.
- Processing stalls or the upload appears stuck: Use a stable connection, keep the app open while it processes, and retry. Updating the app or refreshing the web client can also help.
- You are using iOS and an upload disappears: Bluesky said a May 2026 release fixed a bug that silently dropped some iOS video uploads. Update the app and try again. The release announcement describes the fix.
- You cannot find Beta Features: Check Settings > Beta Features if that section is available on your account. Its absence does not confirm a problem; beta access may be limited or staged.
Is Bluesky becoming a video platform?
The bigger upload allowance makes Bluesky more practical for sharing clips, news footage, commentary, short tutorials, arts coverage and creator updates. Three-minute posts can carry more context than the original one-minute limit, while the reported 10-minute test could make room for longer explainers or performances if it becomes widely available.

That does not make Bluesky a direct substitute for TikTok or YouTube. Bluesky remains a text-centered public conversation network, rather than a video-first service built around a continuous recommendation feed. Its open AT Protocol also supports a wider ecosystem of clients and services, but different clients do not necessarily offer identical features. Bluesky described that broader ecosystem in its January 2026 update.

For long-form archives, searchable video libraries or established creator tools, YouTube may be a better fit. TikTok and Instagram Reels are more video-oriented discovery options. Bluesky can still be useful when the video is part of a conversation, update or community post rather than the whole publishing strategy. This is a difference in product focus, not a claim that any service will deliver better reach for a particular creator.

Bluesky posts are public by design and can be indexed, according to the Bluesky FAQ. Assume a video posted there may be visible beyond your followers; do not treat a post as private just because it is shared with a small audience.

Bluesky says uploaded images and videos are assessed by a third-party provider for categories including adult, suggestive, graphic-media and self-harm content. In its 2025 transparency report, the company said it does not retain media through that vendor or use it to train generative AI systems. These are Bluesky’s descriptions of its practices. Consider consent, copyright and personal safety before posting footage that is sensitive or identifies other people.
