The best blogging app for an iPhone or iPad is usually the official app for the platform where your blog already lives—or where you want it to live. WordPress is the strongest all-purpose choice for managing a conventional blog; Substack and beehiiv suit newsletter-first publishing; Medium favors simple publishing and discovery; Squarespace suits designed business sites; and Ghost fits independent publications built around memberships.
Choose by publishing needs, not App Store ratings. A mobile app can make drafting and routine publishing easy without replacing a desktop browser for site settings, advanced SEO, or payment administration.

These are use-case recommendations, not a measured ranking. The first question is: Where should the blog live, and what do you need to do from your iPhone or iPad?
What counts as a blogging app?
The phrase covers three different kinds of tools. Mixing them up can lead to choosing a good writing app when what you actually need is a site, subscriber list, or publishing workflow.

- Publishing and management apps connect to a platform and can handle some combination of posts, media, comments, subscribers, or site management. WordPress, Substack, Medium, and Squarespace fit here. Ghost and beehiiv are relevant publishing services; check their current mobile web experience and any available apps before assuming that every administrative task works in a native app.
- Writing and Markdown editors help you capture, draft, or format text, but are not automatically blog hosts. Apple Notes, Drafts, Obsidian, Ulysses, and iA Writer can be useful companions; verify current export and publishing integrations before relying on one to publish directly.
- Browser-based publishing means opening your platform in Safari. On iPad, desktop mode may expose controls that an app omits, although a desktop browser can still be easier for complicated administration.
A note-taking app can preserve a draft without managing your blog, comments, email delivery, or subscribers. Treat the writing tool and the publishing platform as separate choices unless the service demonstrably combines them.
Best blogging platforms for iPhone and iPad
WordPress: best all-purpose choice for a conventional blog
The official WordPress app supports WordPress.com sites and self-hosted WordPress sites running WordPress 4.0 or later. Its listing describes tools for posts, pages, media uploads, comments, statistics, categories, and tags, plus photo and video uploads.
That breadth makes WordPress the most versatile starting point for a reader who wants a recognizable website rather than only a newsletter or a profile inside another publisher’s network. WordPress.com also provides newsletter functionality so readers can subscribe and receive email notifications about new posts; see its newsletter documentation.

WordPress.com is a hosted service with plan-dependent features. Self-hosted WordPress uses a separate hosting provider and gives you more responsibility for infrastructure, updates, security, and backups. The app can connect to compatible sites, but it does not remove those responsibilities.
WordPress is flexible partly because it has more settings and potential complexity than a newsletter-first service. A mobile app is useful for creating content and routine management, but expect to use a browser—sometimes on a desktop—for some plugin, theme, SEO, role, or hosting administration. WordPress.com advertises access to more than 60,000 plugins on qualifying plans; that flexibility is not a guarantee that every plugin has a mobile-friendly setup.
Cost: The app is free to download, but that does not mean every site or feature is free. WordPress.com plan prices, hosting, domains, extensions, and transaction costs depend on the setup and plan. Check the current WordPress.com pricing and newsletter terms rather than treating the app’s download price as the cost of blogging.
Substack: best for mobile-first posts and newsletters
Substack combines public posts with email subscriptions and a reader network. Its support page confirms that users can publish text or video posts from the Substack mobile app. That makes it a practical option if each post is also part of an effort to build a subscriber audience.
It is less suited to someone who wants extensive control over an independent site’s design, hosting, or plugin ecosystem. Substack is a platform-first choice: its publishing workflow and built-in network are convenient, while the site and audience experience remain tied to the service and its rules. Think about export and migration before you build a publication that would be difficult to move.
Paid subscriptions are possible, but the payment route matters. Substack’s documentation says U.S. readers using iOS may be directed to the web to complete payment, while readers outside the U.S. may be shown Apple in-app payment options. See its current iOS payment guidance; do not assume one fee or checkout flow applies in every country.
Medium: best for simple publishing and platform discovery
Medium is a hosted writing and reading environment rather than a fully customizable independent website. Its iPhone and iPad app supports reading and writing stories. It is a reasonable fit if you want a low-friction place to publish and value the possibility of discovery among Medium readers more than owning the full site design or building an independently managed subscriber database.
The trade-off is control: Medium offers less freedom over branding and site structure than WordPress, Ghost, or a website builder. Treat it as a publishing destination, not a substitute for every function of a conventional website.
The U.S. App Store listing captured for this article showed Medium Membership at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year. That is a reader membership price, not the cost of hosting an independent blog, and it can change. Check the current listing in your country before subscribing. The listing says the app is free to download with in-app purchases and requires iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later; see the dated compatibility note below.

Squarespace: best for a designed business or portfolio site
Squarespace makes more sense when the blog is one part of a broader website for a business, portfolio, or brand. Its support documentation says that blogs can be updated through the Squarespace app. The wider service emphasizes templates, site design, domains, SEO tools, and commerce; it is a website platform with blogging rather than simply a writing app.
That website-first approach can be valuable when presentation matters, but it may add more site-building work than a writer needs for frequent, straightforward posts. Squarespace pricing is presented dynamically, and the company’s website-platform plans changed in 2026, with some products priced independently. Review the current pricing page and its explanation of website platform plans for your region and billing choice.
Ghost: best for an independent publication with memberships
Ghost is aimed at publishers who want a website, newsletters, memberships, and paid subscriptions in one publishing service. Its managed Ghost(Pro) plans include publishing and newsletter features, with custom themes and additional capabilities on higher plans. Ghost says it does not charge its own payment fee on paid subscriptions, but payment processors may still charge fees.

Its capabilities may be unnecessary if you only want to post occasionally, and the service has a recurring price. Pricing captured for the U.S. page showed Starter at $18 per month billed yearly, Publisher at $29, and Business at $199; check the current page for plan details, currency, and billing terms before deciding.
beehiiv: best when the newsletter is the main product
beehiiv is strongest when the email list is central to the publishing business. Its feature and pricing page describes newsletter and website tools, analytics, recommendations, podcasts, paid subscriptions, and digital products. The Scale plan advertises a 0% platform take rate on paid subscriptions, but Stripe processing fees still apply.
That makes beehiiv worth considering for a creator focused on list growth and newsletter monetization. It is a less obvious choice for a richly customized traditional blog or a low-maintenance personal journal. Pricing captured for the page showed a free Launch tier for up to 2,500 subscribers, Scale at $43 per month, and Max at $96 per month, with annual billing shown for paid tiers. These are volatile plan signals, not guaranteed quotes; verify current limits and billing terms on the official page.
Writing apps that complement a blogging platform
Drafting separately can help if you want to work offline, keep a portable copy, or prepare content for more than one service. Apple Notes is convenient for quick capture. A Markdown editor may make plain-text drafts easier to move between tools. Apps such as Drafts, Obsidian, Ulysses, and iA Writer can fill a writing role, but their current integrations, export formats, and publishing limitations vary.

For a dependable workflow, keep an independent copy of important writing, then move the finished text into the publishing platform for final formatting, preview, and publication. Do not assume that an editor’s local draft will sync, be backed up, or publish correctly without checking its settings and export behavior.
iPhone or iPad: which is better for blogging?
An iPhone is well suited to capturing an idea, taking a photo, drafting a short update, replying to comments, and publishing while away from a desk. It is less comfortable for long-form editing, detailed layout work, or comparing a draft against several research sources.
An iPad offers a better long-form workspace, especially with an external keyboard and trackpad. Split-screen multitasking can keep research beside a draft, while the Files app and Photos can help with media selection. Safari’s desktop-mode option is a useful fallback when an app leaves out site controls. An iPad with a keyboard can be an effective mobile writing setup, but it is not automatically a complete replacement for desktop administration.
Check that the app has access to the Photos library or file location you need. A photo visible in iCloud may not have its original downloaded locally; large uploads are generally safer over reliable Wi-Fi. Do not assume that an app can publish while offline just because it can hold a local draft.

Checked on August 18, 2026. The U.S. App Store listings for WordPress and Medium stated that iPhone requires iOS 17 or later and iPad requires iPadOS 17 or later. WordPress was listed as free to download and compatible with WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress sites running WordPress 4.0 or later. Medium was listed as free with in-app purchases, with U.S. Medium Membership pricing shown as $4.99 monthly or $49.99 annually.

Exact labels vary by platform and app version, so use these as workflow steps rather than a promise that every service exposes the same controls.
- Install the official app or open the service in Safari. Confirm that the app or website is the service you intend to use.
- Sign in and select the right site, publication, newsletter, or profile if the account manages more than one.
- Create a post and add a clear title and body. For long drafts, save a separate copy before doing substantial formatting.
- Add supported elements such as headings, lists, links, images, video, or audio. Capabilities differ: WordPress advertises photo and video uploads, and Substack documents text and video posting from its app; that does not mean every desktop feature is available on mobile.
- Set any available categories, tags, featured image, newsletter audience, or subscriber distribution. Do not assume these options exist in every app.
- Save as a draft, preview the post at phone size, and check paragraph breaks, headings, links, and media.
- Before publishing, verify the destination and account, visibility, publication date, and whether the post will be emailed to subscribers.
- After publishing, reopen the live post. Check formatting, images, captions or credits, links, embeds, and the sharing destination. If it is also sent by email, verify the email version where possible.
Costs, ownership, and moving later
A free download or free starter tier is not the same as a free publishing business. Compare the full cost of the setup: hosting or a platform plan, a custom domain, email delivery, themes and plugins, media storage, payment processing, transaction fees, and any app-store payment route. Prices depend on country, currency, plan, billing interval, and sometimes the way a subscriber pays.
Also decide how much control matters. WordPress, Ghost, and Squarespace are stronger candidates when you want a website with your own domain and more control over presentation. Medium and Substack emphasize publishing within a platform and access to its readers or network, which can make starting simpler but increases reliance on the platform’s discovery, rules, and business model. This is a strategic trade-off, not a guarantee about any service’s future.
“Owning your audience” is never absolute: infrastructure, email delivery, analytics, payment processing, and discovery may remain subject to a provider. Before committing, check how to export posts and subscriber data, what formats are provided, whether you can redirect old URLs, and what happens to paid memberships if you move. Migration may require redesigning the site, reconnecting subscribers, replacing embeds, and rebuilding redirects; platform-native followers may not transfer.
Common mobile blogging problems and fixes
The post went to the wrong site or audience
If you manage multiple properties, confirm the selected account and destination immediately before publishing. For newsletter platforms, check separately whether the post is public, sent to free subscribers, or sent to paid subscribers.
Formatting changed after pasting
Text copied from Notes, Pages, Google Docs, or a web page can bring extra spacing, unexpected fonts, broken lists, hidden links, smart quotes, or unsupported embeds. If the result looks wrong, paste as plain text and apply headings, links, and lists inside the publishing editor. Preview before publishing.

Possible causes include a large file, weak connection, missing Photos permission, an iCloud original that is not downloaded, app suspension, an unsupported format, or low device storage. First save the text as a draft. Confirm the media is available locally in Photos or Files, retry on Wi-Fi, and upload one file at a time. Reduce the file size if needed; if the app still fails, try the browser version. After publication, confirm that the media appears correctly on the live post.
The app does not have the setting you need
Mobile apps may omit advanced SEO fields, redirects, custom HTML, theme settings, plugins, detailed analytics, bulk editing, user roles, or payment administration. Open the platform in Safari—desktop mode may help on iPad—or use a desktop browser for work that the mobile interface cannot handle.
A draft disappeared or a post needs recovery
Draft synchronization, revision history, and recovery options vary. Do not assume a draft is backed up simply because it appeared in an editor. Keep an independent copy of important posts, check whether the platform offers revisions or exports, and confirm how to undo or edit a published post before relying on the app as your only archive.
Choose by the work you need to do
- Choose WordPress if you want the broadest general-purpose website and blog workflow.
- Choose Substack if you want posts, email subscriptions, and a reader network in one newsletter-first service.
- Choose Medium if uncomplicated hosted writing and platform discovery matter more than owning a customized site.
- Choose Squarespace if the blog supports a designed business, portfolio, or commerce site.
- Choose Ghost if you are building an independent publication around memberships and paid subscriptions.
- Choose beehiiv if newsletter growth and monetization are central, rather than traditional blog customization.
- Choose a writing editor plus your platform if you want portable drafts or a separate drafting workflow.
Before committing, ask whether you need your own domain, email subscribers, paid memberships, extensive customization, an existing discovery network, or the ability to administer everything from an iPad. The more your answer depends on site settings, payments, or long-term portability, the more important it is to test the browser experience and export options—not just the app’s writing screen.

App Store privacy labels are also worth checking before installation; disclosures can change. For example, the Medium listing reports certain data collection and notes that Apple has not verified the developer’s disclosure. Read each current listing’s privacy section rather than inferring privacy practices from a platform category.
