There is no authoritative evidence establishing “Blast Off Blitz.exe” as a malware family. The name alone cannot tell you whether a file is dangerous: an executable may be legitimate software, a renamed malicious file, or simply a label repeated by an alarming web page. Don’t run it or delete it solely because of its name. Check its location and signature, then use Windows Security to scan it.

Quick answer: what to do now

  • Microsoft Defender detected the file: Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history, review the detection and affected path, then choose Quarantine or Remove as offered. Don’t choose Allow on device unless you have independently established that it is safe.
  • You found an unfamiliar file but no scanner flagged it: Don’t open it. Record its full path and source, check its digital signature, and scan it before deciding whether to remove it.
  • The detection returns after a restart: Run Microsoft Defender Offline, then check Protection history and scan again.
  • You suspect credential theft, ransomware, remote access, or a work-device compromise: Disconnect the affected computer from the network if practical and contact your organization’s IT/security team or a qualified incident-response professional.

Windows Security offers several scan types, including full and offline scans. A scan result is evidence about the file, but it cannot prove that no account or data was exposed. Microsoft’s Windows Security guide explains the available options and Protection history.

What the name does—and doesn’t—tell you

The exact phrase appears in online articles that call it malware, but the research available for this guide did not identify a corresponding authoritative vendor alert, malware-family record, sample hash, or independent technical analysis. That is not proof that no file by that name could be malicious. It means the name alone does not substantiate claims that it is a Trojan, loader, spyware, or rootkit.

These are different things:

  • Filename: The visible name, such as Blast Off Blitz.exe. Anyone can rename a file.
  • Detection name: The classification displayed by Microsoft Defender or another security scanner. Record the exact name and product.
  • File identity: Evidence such as the SHA-256 hash, path, signer, and behavior. A hash identifies a particular file, not every file with the same name.
  • Threat family: A malware classification that should rest on technical evidence, not just an executable’s filename.

An .exe extension means Windows can execute the file; it does not mean the file is malicious. Conversely, a familiar-looking filename or a valid signature does not guarantee safety. Treat an unfamiliar file as unverified until you have better evidence.

Inspect the file before removing it

1. Record its location and origin

In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Properties to note its location, size, and dates. Record where it came from—such as a download, archive, installer, or application—and any alert text and security product that reported it. A file in a user-writable location such as Downloads, %Temp%, %AppData%, or %LocalAppData% may deserve closer scrutiny, but location alone does not prove that it is malware. A file under C:Program Files is not automatically safe either.

Don’t open, copy, email, or casually upload a suspected executable. If the computer may be compromised, don’t delete the file immediately if it could be needed for an investigation. On a business device, ask IT or security staff what evidence to preserve before attempting cleanup.

2. Check the digital signature

  1. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  2. Open Digital Signatures, select a signer, and choose Details.
  3. Check whether Windows reports the signature as valid and whether the signer matches the software you intended to install.

A valid signature is useful context, not a clean bill of health: certificates can be stolen or misused, and a signed installer can still be compromised. An unsigned file is not automatically malware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Calculate a SHA-256 hash

Open PowerShell and run this command, replacing the example path with the file’s actual path:

Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:fullpathBlast Off Blitz.exe" -Algorithm SHA256

Save the resulting hash. It can help you compare the exact file with a reputable vendor or incident-response report. Don’t treat a matching filename—or a hash mentioned in an unsourced post—as confirmation of a threat.

4. If it is running, inspect its process details

In PowerShell, you can check the executable path and parent process:

Get-CimInstance Win32_Process -Filter "Name = 'Blast Off Blitz.exe'" |
Select-Object ProcessId, ParentProcessId, ExecutablePath, CommandLine

If there is no output, a process with that exact name may not be running. If there is output, note its path, command line, and process IDs. Consider what launched it: a browser download, installer, archive, document, script, or scheduled task? Unexplained command execution or persistence is a reason for closer investigation, not by itself proof of malware.

Safe removal with Windows Security

Step 1: Update protection intelligence

Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates → Check for updates. Updating before a scan gives Defender current protection intelligence to work with. Microsoft recommends updating protection and scanning when unwanted software is suspected; see its guidance on protecting a PC from unwanted software.

Step 2: Run a Full scan

Go to Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan, then start the scan. A full scan checks files and programs on the device and may take time. Keep the computer powered on and let it finish.

Step 3: Review the result and quarantine a confirmed detection

Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Review the detection name, affected path, and action before choosing Quarantine or Remove, as available. Quarantine is safer than manually deleting an unknown system file because it lets Defender isolate a detection. Do not allow a threat simply because you recognize the filename or believe it belongs to an app.

Step 4: Use Microsoft Defender Offline if the problem persists

If a detection returns after reboot, or malware appears to interfere with normal cleanup, save your work and run an offline scan:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options.
  2. Select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan), then choose Scan now.
  3. Allow Windows to restart and complete the scan.
  4. After Windows starts again, check Protection history.

Defender Offline scans outside the normal Windows environment, which can make it harder for persistent malware to hide or interfere. It restarts the PC, so save open work first. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for detecting and removing malware.

Step 5: Consider a second Microsoft scan, then verify

If you want another on-demand check, Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free, manually run tool. It is not a replacement for real-time antivirus protection and expires 10 days after download, so get a fresh copy before using it. Its detailed log is saved at %SYSTEMROOT%debugmsert.log. Details are on Microsoft’s Safety Scanner page.

Restart Windows after cleanup, check Protection history for repeated detections, and run another scan. A clean follow-up scan is reassuring, but it does not establish that credentials were never captured or that every effect of a past compromise has been reversed.

If you need Safe Mode

Safe Mode is not required for every malware cleanup. Consider it only if a process is locked, repeatedly restarts, or prevents normal use of Windows tools. On current Windows installations, use the recovery menus rather than relying on the old repeated-F8 startup instructions:

Advanced: check persistence without deleting blindly

If Defender identifies a detection but it keeps returning, persistence may involve more than the visible executable. Start with Settings → Apps → Installed apps, Task Manager → Startup apps, Task Scheduler, browser extensions, services, and the Startup folders. Microsoft notes that quick scans inspect common malware-start locations such as registry startup entries and known startup folders; see its scan scheduling documentation.

For an advanced user, scheduled tasks whose names include “Blitz” can be listed for review with:

Only remove a startup entry after confirming that its target exists, is unwanted, and is not part of a legitimate application. Don’t delete every file called Blitz.exe, every entry containing “Blitz,” or unfamiliar items in System32. Broad manual deletion can damage Windows or installed software while leaving the actual cause untouched.

Browser pop-ups and redirects also do not establish that this executable infected the computer. Check browser extensions and site notification permissions, and review recent changes to the search engine. A browser issue may have a separate cause, such as an unwanted extension or permitted website notifications.

Protect accounts and recover data

If you ran the file and suspect compromise, use a separate, trusted device to change passwords for sensitive accounts—especially email, banking, work, and password-manager accounts. Revoke active sessions where the service allows it, enable multifactor authentication, and contact your bank or employer if you see suspicious activity. The filename does not prove that credentials were stolen, but a confirmed or credible compromise warrants securing accounts.

If you need to restore personal files, use a backup you know predates the infection and avoid restoring suspicious executables or installers. A System Restore point may help recover system settings, but it is not a substitute for malware scanning, account protection, or a clean backup. It can fail to remove a compromise or restore unwanted changes.

When to stop manual cleanup

Get professional help—or reset/reinstall Windows from trusted recovery media—if detections persist after Defender Offline and a second check, security tools have been disabled, the scope of compromise is unclear, or there are signs of ransomware, remote access, financial fraud, or stolen credentials. On a work computer, involve IT/security staff rather than attempting a reset yourself.

Before a reset or reinstall, preserve important data carefully and use a known-clean backup where possible. Microsoft says that malware-related irreversible changes may require resetting or reinstalling the PC, then restoring important data from a backup made before the infection and stored externally. A reset can remove programs and data, so review the recovery options and back up what is safe to preserve first. See Microsoft’s malware troubleshooting guidance.

Keep the next download from becoming a problem

  • Keep Windows and your applications updated.
  • Download software from its publisher or another trusted source, and check the installer’s signer when practical.
  • Leave Windows Security protection enabled and avoid adding exclusions for files you have not verified.
  • Keep backups, including a copy disconnected from the computer or otherwise protected from ransomware.
  • Don’t install another paid antivirus solely because a file has this name. Built-in Windows tools are an appropriate first step; a subscription cannot identify an unverified file without analyzing it.

Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool has a narrower purpose—removing certain prevalent threats—and is not equivalent to comprehensive antivirus protection. Don’t rely on it as a substitute for Defender scans and ongoing protection: Microsoft’s MSRT overview.
