BlackBerry OS 4.3.1 was reported in early 2008 as the predecessor to the release publicly called OS 4.5. The change was more than a cosmetic label: coverage described new features and changes that depended on BlackBerry’s network services as well as handset software. And although development and carrier certification were reportedly underway, the renaming did not prove that every carrier would deliver the update on time—or at the same time.
From OS 4.3.1 to OS 4.5
On February 2, 2008, CrackBerry described OS 4.5 as “formerly” OS 4.3.1, presenting it as the public successor to the update that had been discussed under the earlier number. That makes “rebranded” a fair shorthand for the version history, but not proof that the final software was identical to every earlier 4.3.1 development or beta build. The package was still evolving, and contemporary reports associated OS 4.5 with additional functionality.
The available contemporary evidence does not establish why Research In Motion (RIM), then BlackBerry’s parent company, changed the public version number. It may have helped distinguish the broader feature release from earlier builds, but treating that as RIM’s confirmed motive would go beyond what the reports show.

It is specialist reporting, not an archived RIM release bulletin, so the distinction matters: it supports the lineage from 4.3.1 to 4.5, but does not settle every detail of RIM’s internal release process.

What the update was expected to add
Reports linked OS 4.5 with features including video recording on certain BlackBerry models and A2DP, the Bluetooth profile used for stereo audio, on selected Pearl and 8800-series devices. A hands-on account of an OS 4.3.1 build also discussed video recording on the Curve and Pearl 8100. These examples show why “simply rebranded” can mislead: the public version number changed while the feature package was being developed.
Those features were not universal promises for every BlackBerry running OS 4.5. Availability could depend on the handset model, its hardware, the carrier’s software build and the user’s service configuration. A phone’s OS version alone did not guarantee that it had the hardware or network support needed for a particular feature.
The hands-on report on the Curve and Pearl 8100 also noted that limited device memory affected installation in the tester’s case. That is a period-specific caution, not evidence that every device encountered the same problem.

Why a handset update did not tell the whole story
Some changes were in the handheld software; others depended on BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS), used by many individual subscribers, or BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), used by organizations. For BIS users, a carrier might need to update its service infrastructure. For BES users, an organization’s IT staff might need to upgrade its server environment. In either case, installing new handset software was not necessarily enough to activate every advertised capability.
That created several distinct milestones: development, testing, official release, carrier certification, carrier distribution and any required service-side enablement. A report that a build was in development or certification did not mean every customer could download it, and a handset update reaching one carrier did not establish simultaneous availability elsewhere.
For a historical update like this, “available” needs a qualifier. A beta or leaked build was not the same as an official, carrier-supported release. Carrier-specific versions could arrive at different times, and enterprise customers could depend on administrator action.

Did the name change mean there would be no delays?
No. A contemporary report said OS 4.3.1 development and carrier certification had reportedly begun around September or October 2007, while availability had still not been formally announced by February 2008. That points to work in progress, not a guaranteed launch date. The report discussing the certification timeline also covered the related OS 4.6 naming change for the forthcoming BlackBerry 9000; it should not be read as proof that OS 4.5 reached every carrier without delay.

Certification suggested progress, but carrier approval, device-specific builds and BIS or BES readiness remained separate dependencies. The rename may have clarified the public identity of the release; it could not remove those rollout bottlenecks.

Which BlackBerry devices were involved?
Contemporary coverage specifically discussed Curve models, the Pearl 8100 and 8800-series devices. That is not a complete compatibility list. Availability could vary by handset, carrier and region, while individual features could have narrower hardware requirements still. The BlackBerry 9000 appears in related reporting about OS 4.6, not as evidence that it belonged on a universal OS 4.5 device list.

Anyone reconstructing a particular device’s update history should distinguish the model from the carrier variant and the exact software build. A version number reported for one handset or network cannot safely be generalized to all BlackBerry owners.
What this means for BlackBerry users today
OS 4.3.1 and OS 4.5 are obsolete historical releases. BlackBerry’s end-of-life information says legacy BlackBerry services ended on January 4, 2022, and that downloads for legacy BlackBerry OS devices are no longer available through its official download system. Its operating-system lifecycle information provides additional context on supported and retired platforms.
So this is a version-history clarification, not a current update path: the name OS 4.5 signaled the public release that followed the 4.3.1 development line, but did not guarantee identical builds, universal feature support or a delay-free rollout.
