A black screen on Discord is usually a capture, permission, or graphics-rendering problem—not one universal Discord error. First try sharing a different target (the whole screen instead of an app, or vice versa), restart Discord, and check whether the problem affects one app or every stream. For games on Windows, switch from exclusive fullscreen to borderless; on Mac, check Screen Recording permission. If only a subscription video is black, content protection may be preventing capture.
Start by identifying what is black: your own preview, what viewers see, one app, or Discord itself. That distinction points to the right fix and helps avoid disruptive steps such as clearing data or reinstalling.
Identify which Discord black screen you have

For a quick service check, visit Discord’s status page. An outage can affect calls or streams, but a black screen limited to one user or application more often points to the local setup.
Try these quick fixes first
- Stop and restart the share. Join the call again if needed, then test once more.
- Fully quit and reopen Discord. Closing its window may leave the client running. On Windows, quit from the system tray and check Task Manager for remaining Discord processes. On macOS, choose Discord > Quit Discord. If the desktop client is unresponsive, Discord also documents Ctrl+R on Windows or Command+R on macOS to refresh it. In a browser, close and reopen the Discord tab.
- Update the relevant software. Check Discord, your operating system, graphics driver, and—if you use Discord in a browser—the browser. Update the game or application you are sharing too.
- Check whether a different capture target works. Instructions are below.
- Lower the stream quality if the video freezes, turns black under load, or fails inconsistently.
Discord’s voice and video troubleshooting guide recommends restarting, updating, checking drivers and settings, and reducing stream quality when needed.

Switch between sharing an app and the whole screen
Application capture and full-screen capture use different paths. A game may display normally on your monitor but fail through one capture method; the reverse can also happen. Testing both is a useful early diagnostic.
- Join a voice channel or call and select Share Your Screen.
- If the application window is black, stop the stream and select Entire Screen instead.
- If the entire screen is black or unreliable, stop sharing and select the individual application.
- Test an ordinary app or webpage as a comparison if the problem occurs with only one target.
Discord documents both application-window and entire-screen sharing in its screen-share guide. Whole-screen sharing can reveal notifications, private messages, or other windows, so close sensitive material and enable Do Not Disturb before using it.
Fixes for Windows
Use borderless fullscreen for games
Discord’s Windows capture documentation says its Windows Graphics Capture method does not work with full-screen exclusive games, and recommends borderless mode where available. In the game’s display or graphics settings, change Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen to Borderless Fullscreen or Windowed Borderless, restart the game if required, and test the stream again. If that fails, try windowed mode.

Test running Discord as administrator
If the game or application is running with administrator privileges while Discord is not, capture may fail. Quit Discord, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, then test the share. Discord includes this in its Windows troubleshooting guidance. Treat it as a troubleshooting test, not a permanent requirement: elevated privileges have security implications.
Try Discord’s capture-method setting
In Discord’s settings, look for an option with wording similar to Use our advanced technology to capture your screen. The name or availability may vary by client build. If present, test the stream with it enabled, then disabled, stopping and restarting the share between tests. Compare application capture with entire-screen capture as well.
Check hardware acceleration and GPU assignment
Discord recommends disabling hardware acceleration for some video and streaming problems. Open User Settings (the gear icon) and search settings for Hardware Acceleration if that feature is available. Depending on the client version, the control may be under Advanced or a video-related section. Turn it off, fully restart Discord, and test. If performance gets worse, turn it back on; disabling acceleration can increase CPU use or reduce performance.

As an advanced, hardware-dependent test, check Windows Graphics settings or your GPU vendor’s control panel for their assignments. Do not assume this is the cause unless other capture tests point that way.

Fixes for macOS
Allow Discord to record the screen
macOS requires permission for screen capture. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security and find the screen-recording permission panel. On recent macOS releases it may be called Screen & System Audio Recording; names vary by version. Enable Discord, then quit and reopen the app so the permission change takes effect. If macOS prompts you again, approve the request.
Discord’s help pages may refer to the older System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Screen Recording route. The wording differs across macOS versions; the current control is in Privacy & Security. See Discord’s Mac screen-share guide.
Choose the capture source again
When you start sharing, test the entire display, a specific application, or a specific window. Stop the stream and select another target if the first choice is black. Updating permission alone may not change an already-running Discord process; reopen Discord after changing it.

- Refresh the Discord page or close and reopen its tab.
- Update the browser and test another supported desktop browser.
- Try sharing the entire screen instead of a tab or window, then test the other capture target.
- Respond to the browser’s screen-capture permission prompt, and check its site permissions if capture is blocked.
- If ordinary pages work but browser video is black, consider whether that specific video is protected content before changing more settings.
Browser hardware acceleration is separate from Discord’s desktop-client hardware-acceleration setting. If the browser itself has rendering trouble, you can test its own hardware-acceleration control, restart the browser, and compare results. Menu locations vary by browser. Discord’s system-requirements page lists minimum browser versions, but those requirements change; check the current page rather than relying on a saved version number.

If only Netflix or another streaming service is black
When menus or subtitles appear but the actual video frame is black—and other applications share normally—the service may be using content-protection measures that prevent capture. This behavior can vary by service, browser, operating system, and content. It is not necessarily a Discord fault, and changing hardware acceleration may not resolve it.
Do not try to bypass DRM, HDCP, or other access controls. Use the service’s official watch-party, co-viewing, household-sharing, or supported-device options where available.

If the stream is intermittent, freezes, or fails when the system is busy, open the stream controls and choose Stream Quality (or the equivalent control). Reduce resolution and frame rate, then test again. The picture will be softer or less fluid, but lower settings can reduce bandwidth and encoder load. Discord recommends lowering these settings when streaming problems persist in its troubleshooting guide.
A network issue more often causes buffering, freezing, degraded quality, or disconnection than a consistently black image. Still, try another network, use Ethernet if practical, pause high-bandwidth uploads or downloads, or temporarily test without a VPN or aggressive firewall filtering. Do not bypass workplace or school security controls; ask the administrator if capture is blocked on a managed device.

Fixes for phones and tablets
Desktop instructions such as running Discord as administrator or changing a Windows capture method do not apply to mobile. Instead:
- Stop and restart the screen share, then fully close and reopen the Discord app.
- Update Discord and the phone or tablet’s operating system.
- Check the operating system’s screen-recording or casting prompts and permissions.
- Where supported, compare sharing the home screen with sharing a specific app.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data as a diagnostic test.
- Reinstall Discord only after confirming you can sign back in and recover your account.
Discord says mobile-browser use is not supported; use the Discord app instead. Screen-share behavior and available controls differ by device and operating-system version.
If Discord’s own window is black
If Discord’s interface is black—not just the stream—focus on client rendering rather than capture. Refresh or fully restart Discord, update the graphics driver and operating system, and test toggling Discord hardware acceleration as described above. If the desktop client remains broken, move on to cache cleanup or reinstalling. These steps can repair a damaged client state, but neither is a guaranteed fix.
Escalate only after simpler tests
If the problem continues across capture targets and apps, work through these less disruptive steps before reinstalling:
- Reset Voice & Video settings from Discord’s troubleshooting or debugging area if the control is available.
- Clear Discord’s cache using instructions appropriate to your operating system and client version. Folder locations differ, so do not delete an unfamiliar directory based on an outdated path.
- Reinstall Discord from the official source if the client itself appears damaged.
- Compare another app, browser, device, or network to isolate where the failure occurs.
If the failure began after a Discord, operating-system, or driver update, record the date and versions. Avoid rolling back an update unless there is authoritative guidance for your specific version; rollbacks can create security and compatibility problems.
What to send Discord Support
For a persistent, reproducible problem, collect the details that distinguish a capture failure from a viewer or client issue:
- Operating system and exact version; Discord desktop, browser, or mobile client; and app version if visible
- GPU model and driver version
- Whether one application or all applications are affected
- Whether your preview is black, viewers see black, and whether audio continues
- Whether entire-screen sharing works, whether borderless mode works, and whether changing hardware acceleration changes the result
- A screenshot or short recording, plus debug logs if Discord asks for them
Submit the report through Discord Support. For Windows capture failures, Discord’s documentation also describes a Voice/Video Connected debugging panel and capture information; this is mainly useful when you are comfortable collecting diagnostics or support requests them.
