For a small group, you can share large files with BitTorrent using qBittorrent’s built-in tracker and a private .torrent file. The sender keeps the files and qBittorrent online; recipients use the torrent file to find and download them. For people outside your home or office network, you will usually also need router and firewall configuration—and a network connection that accepts incoming traffic.
This is a private way to coordinate a small swarm, not an encrypted or access-controlled file service. Keep the .torrent file within the intended group, and use a different method if you need account-based access, revocation, or confidentiality.
What you are setting up
BitTorrent divides files into pieces so that recipients can download pieces from the original sender and, as they receive them, from one another. That can reduce the sender’s incremental upload load when several people want the same large file. The tracker helps clients find peers; it does not ordinarily host or transfer the files. See the BitTorrent protocol specification.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Seeder: A client with all the content, able to upload pieces. The sender is the initial seeder.
- Peer: A client participating in the transfer. A peer still downloading may also upload pieces it already has; “leecher” is a common informal term for one that has not finished.
.torrentfile: Small metadata describing the content, including its name, piece hashes and tracker information. It does not contain the large files themselves.- Tracker: A coordinator that responds to client announce requests with information about peers. Clients then exchange the data directly.
- BitTorrent client: Software such as qBittorrent that reads the metadata, exchanges pieces, checks their integrity and seeds.
DHT and peer exchange can also help clients find peers, but a private torrent is intended to use its specified tracker instead. The private=1 flag instructs compliant clients to announce only to the private tracker and connect only to peers returned by it, as described in BEP 27.

What “private tracker” means here
A tracker for friends
For a one-off transfer or a small family or team, “private tracker” can simply mean a tracker URL known to the group, paired with a .torrent file delivered privately. qBittorrent documents an embedded tracker that can handle this basic coordination without a separate tracker application: qBittorrent’s tracker guide.
That embedded tracker is not a conventional private-tracker community. It does not provide user accounts, invitations, per-person permissions, a searchable catalog, ratio rules, or moderation. The tracker URL and torrent file are not authentication credentials; someone who gets the file may be able to try joining the swarm.
A private-tracker website
A long-running community typically needs a web application, accounts, authentication or passkeys, a database, administration, moderation, statistics, backups and rules for members. That is a substantially larger project than sharing a file with a few known recipients. Do not build it unless those community features are actually needed.

What you need before starting
- A computer with the complete files and enough free disk space to retain them while seeding.
- qBittorrent installed from the official download page or the project’s official installation guidance. Prefer a current stable release over an alpha or nightly build, and verify the publisher and release signature or checksum where practical.
- A host that can stay awake and connected for the transfer. If it shuts down or loses its network connection, recipients may have no seed to download from.
- Access to the router and computer firewall if recipients will connect from outside your local network.
- A way to give recipients the
.torrentfile separately from the large content. - Permission to distribute every file you include. BitTorrent is a distribution protocol; whether sharing particular content is lawful depends on authorization and applicable jurisdiction.
As listed by the official project on July 7, 2026, qBittorrent 5.2.3 was the latest stable release. Releases and platform packages change, so check the official news page and release repository when installing. The tracker guide’s menu details date from an older interface; labels and locations can differ in current builds.

Set up qBittorrent as the tracker and seeder
1. Enable the embedded tracker and confirm its address
In qBittorrent’s settings, find the advanced options and enable the embedded tracker. Consult the tracker guide for the version you use, then confirm the actual tracker address and port configured or shown by your installation. Its documented example is http://your_public_ip:9000/announce; port 9000 is an example/default in that guide, not a universal value.
Replace your_public_ip with an address recipients can reach from their network. A local-network-only transfer can use the sender’s LAN address if every recipient is on the same network. For a long-running setup with a changing residential IP, a dynamic-DNS hostname may help; it is optional for a one-off transfer.
2. Make the sender’s host address stable on the LAN
Set a DHCP reservation in the router, or otherwise ensure the sender computer keeps the same local IP address. A forwarding rule aimed at yesterday’s local address will stop working if the router assigns the computer a different one after a reboot.

In the router’s port-forwarding settings, direct the tracker’s external port to the same port on the sender computer. For qBittorrent’s documented example, that would be TCP port 9000, but use the port and protocol actually configured for your installation. Allow the applicable port through the computer’s firewall as well.

Do not confuse the tracker port with qBittorrent’s BitTorrent listening port. The tracker port lets clients announce and receive peer information; the listening port accepts peer connections for piece transfers. They can be different, and forwarding only the tracker port does not necessarily make the seeder reachable. Check qBittorrent’s connection settings and forward the peer-listening port too if required for incoming connections.
qBittorrent’s guide notes that a home connection behind NAT normally needs router forwarding for access from the Internet. This will not work as expected if the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), blocks inbound traffic, or places another router upstream. If the router’s WAN address is not the public address seen from the Internet, upstream NAT may be involved.
4. Create the torrent from the final files
- Open qBittorrent’s Torrent Creator (the exact menu label or location may vary by version).
- Select the file or folder you intend to distribute.
- Add the embedded tracker’s announce URL, using the reachable address and configured port.
- Select Private torrent if the swarm should rely on that tracker rather than DHT or peer exchange.
- Choose Start seeding immediately. Leave piece size at the default unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Save the resulting
.torrentfile in a location you can find and share securely.
The torrent metadata includes hashes used to verify pieces. Create it only after the content is final: changing the source files afterward can make recipients’ data fail verification. The underlying metadata and piece model are described in the protocol specification.
5. Start seeding and distribute the torrent file
Wait until qBittorrent shows the torrent as seeding, then keep the client running, the original files in place, the computer awake, and the network and firewall configuration active. Send the .torrent file to recipients through a channel appropriate to the content, such as encrypted messaging or a private cloud folder. It can reveal file and folder names, the tracker URL, and possibly comments or creator metadata. Do not publish it publicly if the swarm is meant to stay limited to your group.

How recipients download the files
- Install a compatible BitTorrent client that supports private torrents.
- Open the
.torrentfile and choose the destination folder. - Start the job if the client does not start automatically.
- Leave the client running until the download and verification reach 100%.
- Optionally keep seeding so later recipients can download pieces from another source.
The BitTorrent Help Center’s add-torrent guide describes opening a torrent file, choosing a save location and starting the job if necessary. For this setup, sharing the .torrent file directly is simpler than relying on a magnet link, which typically requires peer discovery and retrieval of torrent metadata.
Test the setup before sharing a large archive
Try a small folder first, especially before committing to a very large dataset or backup. Testing separates configuration problems from the time and bandwidth demands of the final transfer.
- On the sender: Confirm qBittorrent shows the test torrent as seeding and that the tracker status is not reporting an error.
- On the same LAN: Have a recipient open the test
.torrentfrom another computer on the local network. A LAN test helps check the client and files without relying on Internet forwarding. - From another network: Test using a recipient on a genuinely external connection, such as a mobile hotspot. Confirm the tracker returns peers and that piece transfer begins.
- Check both kinds of reachability: Tracker status alone does not prove the seeder accepts incoming peer connections. Test an actual download as well.
A port-checking website is only a limited diagnostic: a “closed” result can mean the network path is blocked, or simply that no service is listening on the port it tested. Do not treat a checker as a security assessment.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Tracker is offline or announces fail | Incorrect address or port, tracker disabled, firewall or router rule missing, or qBittorrent stopped | Verify the configured announce URL, tracker setting, port-forward target and firewall rule; confirm the client is running. |
| Works on the LAN but not over the Internet | NAT, CGNAT, double NAT, ISP restrictions, or a wrong forwarding target | Check the router’s WAN address, reserve the host’s LAN address, review upstream routers and ask the ISP whether inbound connections are available. |
| Tracker responds but the recipient sees zero peers or cannot download | The sender is not seeding, or the peer-listening port is unreachable even though the tracker port works | Confirm the sender is seeding and check the sender’s BitTorrent listening port and firewall rules, not just the tracker port. |
| Torrent pauses or stops mid-transfer | The sender’s computer slept, qBittorrent closed, files moved, or the network disconnected | Restore the source computer, original file location and connection; keep the client available until recipients finish. |
| Recipient’s files do not verify | The source changed after torrent creation, the destination was selected incorrectly, or the recipient has an incomplete or mismatched copy | Check names and sizes, point the client at the correct data and run a force recheck. If the source changed, create and distribute a new torrent from the final files. |
| People outside the group can join | The .torrent file or tracker details were forwarded or published |
Stop distributing that torrent file and use a more controlled sharing method. A private flag does not authenticate recipients or prevent onward sharing. |
On Linux, these examples can help check a configured TCP tracker port; substitute the actual port, and note that firewall commands differ by distribution:

ss -ltnp | grep 9000
On Ubuntu systems using UFW, the corresponding example to allow TCP 9000 is:
sudo ufw allow 9000/tcp
These commands do not fix CGNAT, an incorrect router rule, or a tracker that is not configured to listen on that port.
What privacy the private flag does—and does not—provide
A private torrent is not encrypted BitTorrent. The flag controls peer discovery behavior for clients that comply with BEP 27; it does not encrypt file contents, hide participants’ IP addresses from peers, authenticate users, or stop a recipient from copying or forwarding the .torrent file. Keep the torrent file private, but do not treat secrecy of the file as strong access control.
If the contents are sensitive, encrypt them before creating the torrent—for example, as an encrypted archive—and deliver its password through a separate channel. Encryption can protect the files if the metadata or data transfer is exposed, but it does not conceal which network addresses are participating.
When a different sharing method is better
- Use ordinary HTTPS or managed file transfer when there are only one or two recipients, browser access matters, or you need accounts, access revocation or audit logs.
- Use a LAN share or local transfer when everyone is on the same home or office network; router port forwarding is unnecessary, and a tracker may add needless setup.
- Use BitTorrent when files are large or several recipients can help upload pieces to one another, reducing how much the original sender must serve after the initial seed.
- Consider a VPS-hosted tracker if a home connection cannot accept incoming connections or the tracker must remain available independently of the sender’s computer. A VPS tracker does not automatically store or seed the content: storage and potentially substantial upload bandwidth are still needed somewhere.
- Consider a full private-tracker application only for a sustained community that needs accounts, cataloging, moderation and statistics.
A VPN is not a universal fix for inbound reachability: many VPNs do not support port forwarding, and one that blocks incoming connections can prevent peers from reaching a seeder or tracker.
