As a student, Gates gained access to computer time and became deeply interested in programming. He developed his skills during his teenage years with Paul Allen, a friend who shared his interest in computers and microprocessors. Gates became known for intense concentration, competitiveness, and close attention to technical and business details. Those descriptions are characterizations of his working style, not complete explanations of his personality or career.

How Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft
Microsoft began with a software opportunity rather than the invention of a new computer. In January 1975, Popular Electronics featured the Altair 8800, an early hobbyist microcomputer. Gates and Allen contacted the company behind the Altair and offered a version of the BASIC programming language for the machine.
The resulting Altair BASIC interpreter became the early product associated with Microsoft’s launch. Gates and Allen started the company in 1975, initially developing and licensing software for emerging personal computers. In 1976, they adopted “Microsoft” as the company’s business name.
Gates did not invent the personal computer. His principal contribution was in software: writing and overseeing programs, recognizing that software could be licensed at scale, and building a company around that model. Paul Allen was not a minor early collaborator; he was Gates’s childhood friend, co-founder, and a central technical and business partner in Microsoft’s formative years.

Allen left Microsoft’s day-to-day operations in the early 1980s but remained a major shareholder and prominent technology figure until his death in 2018.
Microsoft’s rise
Microsoft’s early growth accelerated as personal computers moved from hobbyist projects into business and home markets. The company opened its first international sales office in Japan in 1978. In 1981, Microsoft’s operating-system business expanded through the IBM PC launch.
Microsoft licensed its operating-system software to IBM rather than treating the IBM PC operating system as a one-time product sale. MS-DOS became central to Microsoft’s growth and was adopted across a wider compatible-PC ecosystem. That distinction mattered: licensing allowed Microsoft to benefit as multiple hardware makers sold computers using compatible software.
Microsoft released the first version of Windows on November 20, 1985. Windows provided a graphical environment for the PC platform and, over successive versions, became the foundation of Microsoft’s dominant desktop ecosystem. The company went public on March 13, 1986.

Microsoft’s success rested on several reinforcing mechanisms:
- Software licensing: Microsoft supplied software for widely adopted hardware instead of depending on one computer manufacturer.
- Compatibility: Hardware makers and software developers had strong incentives to support the Windows environment.
- Platform effects: More users encouraged more developers to create Windows software, which in turn made the platform more attractive.
- Product expansion: Microsoft developed products such as Office, which became a major productivity-software suite.
- Execution and reinvestment: Revenue supported new products, hiring, sales, partnerships, and expansion.
Gates was important to this process, but Microsoft’s outcome was not the work of one person. Paul Allen, later executives, Microsoft employees, IBM, hardware partners, independent developers, market timing, and the broader growth of personal computing all mattered.
Gates’s roles at Microsoft
Gates was Microsoft’s co-founder and served as chief executive officer until 2000. He also served as chairman and became chief software architect in 2000. His influence extended beyond programming. He helped shape product priorities, licensing strategy, relationships with hardware manufacturers, corporate culture, and Microsoft’s competitive responses to companies including IBM, Apple, and Netscape.
In June 2006, Microsoft announced a two-year plan for Gates to transition away from day-to-day work. The change became effective in 2008, when he moved to full-time work at the foundation while retaining part-time involvement with Microsoft. He did not abruptly sever all ties with the company or simply “retire” in 2008.

Microsoft’s controversies
Antitrust litigation
Microsoft’s dominance brought significant legal and political scrutiny. In the late 1990s, the U.S. Department of Justice and several states challenged Microsoft’s conduct in the operating-system and browser markets. The litigation examined whether the company used its market position and business practices to restrict competition.

The case affected public perceptions of Gates as an aggressive executive and helped define debates about platform power in the technology industry. It is important to distinguish the allegations, court findings, remedies, and later procedural outcomes rather than treating every criticism of Microsoft as a legal conclusion. Microsoft’s commercial success and the legal criticism of some of its conduct are related parts of its history, but they are not identical claims.

Management style and market power
Employees, executives, journalists, and biographers have described Gates as demanding, confrontational, highly detail-oriented, or intimidating. These descriptions should be attributed to the people making them. They help explain the culture associated with Microsoft’s early years, but they do not by themselves establish that every management decision was unreasonable or that Microsoft’s market position resulted from one personality trait.
Philanthropic power and inequality
Gates’s philanthropy has also attracted criticism. A large private foundation can influence public-health, education, agricultural, and development priorities without being directly accountable to voters. That raises questions about who sets global priorities, how communities participate in decisions, and how results are evaluated.
The criticism exists alongside substantial philanthropic commitments and the Gates Foundation’s stated work in global health, poverty reduction, education, and related fields. Spending or grantmaking should not automatically be equated with proven impact. The foundation’s own reports and statements are important evidence of its goals and activities, but they are not independent evaluations of every outcome.
Public-health commentary
Gates has become a prominent public voice on pandemic preparedness, infectious disease, and vaccines. His influence comes from philanthropy, advocacy, funding, and public communication. He is not a physician, epidemiologist, government official, or sole authority on public-health policy simply because of his wealth or public profile.
Why Gates left Microsoft’s daily leadership
Gates gradually moved from corporate management to philanthropy. He began major philanthropic work in 1994 through the William H. Gates Foundation. In 1997, he and Melinda Gates created the Gates Library Foundation. Those organizations merged in 2000 to form the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Microsoft announced Gates’s transition in 2006, and in 2008 he left the company’s day-to-day operations to focus full time on the foundation. He continued as Microsoft chairman and remained an adviser for years afterward. His departure was therefore a change in priorities and operating role, not an immediate end to his connection with Microsoft.

The Gates Foundation
The organization is now branded the Gates Foundation. Melinda French Gates left its leadership in 2024, so older descriptions calling the pair co-chairs are outdated. Gates is listed as chair and a board member as of August 2026.
The foundation’s major areas include global health, infectious-disease prevention, maternal and child health, agricultural development, education, and poverty reduction. It also advocates for policies and partnerships related to these goals. Its history page, leadership profile, and Gates’s philanthropy overview describe the organization’s development and priorities from their respective institutional perspectives.

Understanding the foundation requires separating three claims: what it says it aims to do, how much it reports spending or granting, and what independent evidence shows about results. A reported grant total is not the same as money already disbursed, and neither necessarily proves that a program achieved its intended effect.
The foundation’s planned 2045 closure
In May 2025, Gates announced that the foundation plans to close permanently on December 31, 2045. He said he intends to direct virtually all of his remaining wealth to the foundation during the intervening 20 years.
This is a future commitment and timetable, not a claim that Gates has already given away all his wealth. The foundation describes the plan as a time-limited philanthropic strategy involving accelerated giving. Its future spending levels and program priorities should be understood as stated plans rather than guaranteed predictions of impact.
Readers can consult the foundation’s FAQ for its explanation of the closure plan.
What Bill Gates does now
Gates’s post-Microsoft work spans several distinct institutions rather than one unified job:
- Gates Foundation: He serves as chair and board member, working on the foundation’s strategy, advocacy, and philanthropic priorities.
- Gates Ventures: His private office works across areas including health, climate, energy, education, and technology.
- Breakthrough Energy: Gates is associated with initiatives focused on climate change and clean-energy innovation.
- TerraPower: He is associated with the advanced nuclear-energy company and its development work.
- Health research: His interests include infectious disease, pandemic preparedness, Alzheimer’s research, and other health issues.
- Writing and public communication: He publishes essays, recommendations, interviews, and explanations of his work through Gates Notes.
These organizations have different structures and purposes. Gates’s formal foundation role should not be confused with the activities of his private office, companies, investment initiatives, or personal writing.
Source Code: My Beginnings
Gates’s first memoir, Source Code: My Beginnings, was published by Knopf on February 4, 2025. The listed hardcover edition is 336 pages. It covers his childhood, family, early programming, school years, relationship with Paul Allen, and the formative period around Microsoft’s creation.
The book is a memoir of beginnings, not a complete autobiography through 2026. It is valuable for Gates’s own perspective, but it should not be the only source for disputed events, Microsoft’s institutional history, the antitrust litigation, or the later development of his philanthropy. The official publisher page is available from Penguin Random House.
Personal life
Gates married Melinda French Gates, and they have three children. The couple divorced in 2021. Melinda later left the Gates Foundation’s leadership in 2024, after which the organization adopted the Gates Foundation branding and a different governance description.
His family background, education, programming interests, and relationship with Paul Allen are more relevant to understanding his biography than unverified private anecdotes or speculation about how family relationships determined his corporate or philanthropic decisions.
Legacy
Gates’s legacy has two connected but distinct parts. At Microsoft, he helped turn software into a scalable business and played a major role in the spread of operating systems, graphical PC software, and productivity applications. That achievement depended on co-founder Paul Allen, Microsoft’s employees, IBM and other hardware partners, software developers, favorable market conditions, and aggressive execution—not Gates alone.
After Microsoft, Gates became one of the most influential figures in large-scale private philanthropy. Through the foundation and related work, he has focused attention and funding on global health, infectious disease, development, education, and climate and energy innovation. His influence has also intensified debates about billionaire power, democratic accountability, corporate concentration, and whether private wealth should shape public priorities.
The most accurate summary is neither “visionary genius” nor “monopolist” as an all-purpose label. Gates was a highly consequential software entrepreneur whose business methods helped build a dominant technology platform, later becoming a major philanthropist and investor whose goals, influence, and results remain subject to public debate and evaluation.
