BigCommerce is usually the better fit if you want a hosted store with infrastructure and routine maintenance handled for you. WooCommerce is usually better if you want direct control over WordPress and PHP and are prepared to manage hosting, updates, security, and compatibility. The right choice depends on your expected sales, payment setup, customization needs, and who will operate the store—not just whether the core software is free.
How do BigCommerce and WooCommerce differ?
| Decision area | BigCommerce | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting and operations | Hosted platform. BigCommerce says hosting, security, automatic updates, PCI compliance, and core commerce features are included. | Runs on WordPress. The store owner chooses hosting and handles updates, plugin compatibility, security, backups, and PCI-related operational work. |
| Customization | Managed backend with APIs, webhooks, and headless options for extending the storefront. | Direct access to the WordPress/PHP stack, database, hooks, custom plugins, and theme overrides. |
| Platform cost model | Subscription plans, with GMV thresholds and—in some cases—an additional Open Payment Provider fee. | Core software is free and has 0% revenue share; hosting, extensions, payment processing, and operational work are separate costs. |
| Who operates the stack? | BigCommerce manages the core hosted infrastructure; the merchant still configures and runs the business. | The merchant or its technical partner is responsible for the WordPress and hosting stack. |
In practical terms, BigCommerce trades some infrastructure control for a managed service. WooCommerce gives a technical team more direct control, but that also means more choices—and more responsibility.

BigCommerce distinguishes embedded payment providers from Open Payment Providers: embedded providers are excluded from the listed platform fee. The fee percentages apply to eligible order GMV, not automatically to every store or payment arrangement. Check which category your intended provider falls into and model the plan threshold and any stated overage terms against your own sales.
#1 Best Overall
WooCommerce costs to include
- Core: WooCommerce lists its core software as free, with 0% revenue share.
- Hosting: WooCommerce lists $25–$350 per month for most stores.
- Extensions: WooCommerce lists $29–$299 per year per extension.
- Payment processing and operations: A payment processor may charge its own fees; hosting administration, maintenance, and development may also require time or paid support.
The hosting and extension figures are WooCommerce’s 2026 listed ranges, not a quote for every store. Your actual total depends on the host and extensions you select, as well as the effort needed to operate and customize the site.
Is WooCommerce cheaper than BigCommerce?
It can be, but the free core alone does not establish that it will be. A useful comparison includes BigCommerce’s subscription and any applicable Open Payment Provider fee alongside WooCommerce’s hosting, extensions, processor charges, and the cost of maintaining its WordPress stack.
Rank #2
Compare the platforms at your expected sales level and payment mix. At lower GMV, include the recurring hosting and extension costs even if WooCommerce’s core is free. As sales grow, include BigCommerce’s GMV thresholds and eligible-order fee in the calculation. For WooCommerce, account for any additional hosting or technical work your configuration requires. Neither platform’s headline price is a complete total-cost figure for an individual store.
Which platform is easier to maintain?
BigCommerce is generally easier if you want the vendor to manage the core infrastructure. Its hosted offering includes hosting, security, automatic updates, and PCI compliance, according to BigCommerce. This reduces the infrastructure and maintenance work the store owner must handle, though it does not remove the need to manage the shop itself.

WooCommerce requires more hands-on technical ownership. The store owner chooses a host and is responsible for updates, backups, security, plugin compatibility, and PCI-related operational work. That can suit a WordPress team that wants control; it can be burdensome if no one is accountable for keeping the stack healthy.
When comparing workload, decide who will monitor updates, resolve conflicts, maintain backups, and handle security tasks. A platform that appears cheaper on a software-price comparison may still require more staff or agency time.

Which platform offers more control and customization?
Choose WooCommerce for direct WordPress and PHP control
WooCommerce exposes the WordPress/PHP stack, database, hooks, custom plugins, and theme overrides. That makes it the stronger fit when your requirements depend on changing the underlying WordPress implementation or building custom functionality directly into it. The trade-off is that custom code and plugin choices become part of the system your team must maintain.
Choose BigCommerce for managed infrastructure with extension options
BigCommerce offers APIs, webhooks, and headless options while keeping the backend managed. That can fit a team that wants to build a custom storefront or integrate systems without taking on ownership of the core hosting environment. Its approach is extensible, but it is not the same as direct control over a WordPress/PHP installation.

There is no universal winner: the answer depends on the store’s catalog, traffic, architecture, and technical capacity. BigCommerce publishes claims of 99.99% uptime, support for catalogs with 2M+ SKUs, and API throughput of 400+ calls per second. These are BigCommerce’s 2026 vendor-published capabilities, not independent test results or a guarantee for every store.
WooCommerce does not have a universal SKU or throughput limit published in the pricing information cited here. Its ability to scale depends heavily on the chosen host, WordPress configuration, database, caching, and plugin architecture. A WooCommerce store may therefore need a technical review of its specific setup rather than a comparison based on one platform-wide capacity number.
For either platform, assess your expected catalog and traffic, required integrations, storefront architecture, and who will support the system as it grows. BigCommerce’s published capacity figures may help frame questions for its vendor, while a WooCommerce estimate needs to account for the actual hosting and application design.
Which platform should you choose?
BigCommerce is likely the better fit if
- You prefer a hosted platform that includes core infrastructure, automatic updates, security, and PCI compliance.
- Your team has limited capacity to manage a server and WordPress maintenance.
- You want APIs or headless options while leaving the core backend managed.
- You have checked how your GMV and payment provider affect the 2026 plan and fee model.
WooCommerce is likely the better fit if
- You already use WordPress or have a team comfortable operating it.
- You need direct access to WordPress, PHP, the database, hooks, plugins, or theme code.
- You want to choose your host and extensions and can take responsibility for security, updates, backups, and compatibility.
- Your cost model includes hosting, extensions, processor fees, and the people or services needed to maintain the store.
Before committing, write down expected GMV, payment methods, hosting and extension needs, customization requirements, and the person responsible for ongoing maintenance. Those inputs reveal more than comparing a free software download with a hosted plan price.
