Christopher Miller said on June 1, 2024, that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse would not use generative AI. His statement followed reports about Sony’s broader interest in using AI to improve production efficiency. However, Miller’s promise specifically concerns generative AI; it does not establish that every machine-learning, automated, or software-assisted process is prohibited.
What Christopher Miller said
A fan publicly asked Sony to keep generative AI out of Beyond the Spider-Verse. Miller, a writer-producer associated with the Spider-Verse trilogy, responded on X on June 1, 2024, saying that there was no generative AI in the film and that there never would be. Read Miller’s post.
Miller also explained the artistic reasoning behind the position. The Spider-Verse films aim to create original visual styles, not reproduce what he characterized as an AI-generated average of existing artists’ work. That makes the statement both a production assurance and an argument about authorship: the franchise’s distinctive look is intended to come from artists making deliberate creative choices.
Why the rumor started
The concern appears to have followed reported remarks by Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra. At an investor event, Vinciquerra was reported to have discussed Sony’s interest in using AI to make film and television production more efficient and less expensive.

Those comments addressed Sony’s broader corporate strategy. They were not evidence that generative AI had been used in Beyond the Spider-Verse, nor did they announce an AI workflow for the sequel. Generative AI is not the same as machine learning
The most important qualification is the word generative.

- Generative AI creates new images, video, audio, text, or other content from prompts or learned patterns. In animation, that could mean generating visual material or altering creative work with a generative model.
- Machine-learning assistance is a broader category. A model can help track details, interpolate movement, maintain continuity, clean up images, or perform another narrowly defined technical task without independently creating a finished performance or shot.
- Conventional automation includes procedural animation, simulation, rendering, compositing, and other software-controlled processes that may not involve machine learning at all.
As a result, “no generative AI” does not automatically mean “no algorithmic tools” or “no automation.” Miller rejected one category of technology; his post should not be expanded into a blanket technical inventory of every tool used by the production.

Reports about the earlier Spider-Verse films described a machine-learning program developed at Sony Pictures Imageworks to help track and maintain ink-line details as animated characters moved from frame to frame.

The technique was relevant to the franchise’s comic-book-inspired aesthetic. Reapplying and adjusting lines manually across every frame could be repetitive and time-consuming. The reported software assisted with that continuity task, while human animators remained responsible for expressions, movement, design decisions, and creative direction. That reported use of machine learning does not contradict Miller’s statement. A narrow production-assistance tool and a generative system that creates content are not interchangeable.

The precise conclusion is therefore: Miller ruled out generative AI for the film, but did not explicitly rule out every form of machine learning, automation, or software assistance.
Why the issue matters to animation workers and fans
The debate sits within broader Hollywood concerns that became especially prominent during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA labor disputes. Writers, animators, visual-effects artists, and other creative workers have raised questions about job displacement, consent, training data, attribution, and the value of human-created work.

The issue is particularly sensitive for Spider-Verse because the films are celebrated for their unusual combination of computer-generated animation, comic-book techniques, hand-crafted detail, and shifting visual languages. Their appeal depends on a strong sense of artistic authorship. Miller’s explanation presents generative AI as conflicting with that goal, while leaving room for the more limited use of tools that assist artists with technical work.
The bottom line
Fans received a clear project-specific promise from Christopher Miller: Beyond the Spider-Verse would not use generative AI. The statement should not be reported as proof that the film will contain no software automation or machine-learning assistance whatsoever. Earlier Spider-Verse films reportedly used a human-supervised machine-learning tool for ink-line continuity, illustrating why the distinction matters.
Nor did Sony’s reported comments about using AI to improve production efficiency prove that generative AI was planned for this movie. They described a broader corporate strategy, while Miller addressed the creative technology used—or not used—in the Spider-Verse sequel.
