Foodica is the clearest fit if you want a theme built specifically around food publishing: its WordPress.org listing names food blogs and recipe websites as its audience and includes a Recipe Index template. Astra and Kadence are broader choices for bloggers who value general-purpose customization, while Recipe Blogs is a smaller-adoption block theme. There is no evidence here of a universal winner or a controlled speed ranking, so choose by how readers browse recipes, what publishing features you need, and how you plan to maintain the site.

Which WordPress theme is best for a recipe blog?

For a recipe-first site, Foodica is the most directly specialized option in this comparison. Its listing describes the theme as designed for food blogs, recipe websites, and culinary magazines, and explicitly includes a Recipe Index template. Kadence and Astra are more general-purpose themes with customization and ecommerce features; they can work for food publishing, but their listings do not describe the same dedicated recipe focus.

Recipe Blogs is another food-oriented option, built as a block theme, but its WordPress.org listing showed a much smaller installation base and no reviews at the time checked. That is a reason to investigate its support and fit, not proof that it is a poor theme.

Choose based on how readers use your recipe site

Recipe index and archives

A recipe index helps readers browse a collection; it is different from the recipe card on an individual post. Foodica explicitly lists a Recipe Index template. For any other theme, check whether its templates and archive layouts can present your categories and collections clearly, or whether you will need another tool to create that experience.

Recipe cards and structured data

Find out whether recipe content and markup come from the theme or a separate recipe plugin. A theme’s name or food-oriented design does not establish that an individual recipe page outputs the structured data you need. WP Recipe Maker’s WordPress.org listing says the plugin outputs Recipe JSON-LD and ItemList metadata for recipe roundup posts; that is a plugin capability, not a claim about every theme. Review the plugin’s listing, check compatibility with your setup, and validate a published page.

Customization and setup

A focused food theme may provide a more relevant starting layout, while a multipurpose theme may offer wider controls and depend on plugins for recipe-specific publishing. Compare the amount of setup you are willing to do with the flexibility you actually need. Kadence lists header and footer building and global style controls; Astra lists page-builder and ecommerce plugin compatibility.

Paid features and maintenance

Before committing, check whether the features you need are included in the free theme or depend on a paid upgrade, support plan, or separate plugin. Current prices are not established here, so verify them on the vendor’s own pages. Also review the current changelog, WordPress and PHP compatibility, support activity, and update history; adoption figures alone do not tell you how responsive support will be.

Do you need a separate recipe plugin?

Use a separate plugin when the theme does not provide the recipe authoring, card, or markup workflow your site requires. WP Recipe Maker is one option to evaluate: its WordPress.org listing says it generates schema.org/Recipe JSON-LD, supports recipe and guided-recipe metadata, and outputs ItemList metadata for roundup posts. Confirm that the plugin works with your theme and test the output on an actual published recipe rather than assuming compatibility from a feature description.

Will a recipe theme guarantee Google rich results?

No. Google says structured data can help it understand recipe content and can make a page eligible for recipe-related search enhancements, but eligibility is not a promise that an enhancement will appear. Google’s Recipe documentation identifies the recipe name and image among required properties and recommends checking markup with the Recipe structured data documentation and the Rich Results Test. Google’s official guidance is explicit: “Google does not guarantee that features that consume structured data will show up in search results.”

How to make the final choice

  1. Map the browsing experience. Decide how visitors should find recipes—through an index, categories, archives, or filters—and check that the theme supports the layout you want.
  2. Inspect a recipe page, not just the demo. Establish whether recipe cards and structured data are handled by the theme or a plugin, then validate the published output.
  3. Compare setup with flexibility. Choose a focused starting point if it fits your workflow, or a general-purpose theme if its customization and integrations matter more.
  4. Check ongoing fit. Verify current compatibility, updates, support, and the cost of any commercial upgrade or required plugin before building around it.
  5. Test the finished site. Measure speed and usability with your actual images, hosting, plugins, and page layouts. Theme descriptions such as “lightweight” are not an apples-to-apples benchmark.
