There is no single best WordPress survey plugin for every site. A general form builder with survey features may be enough for feedback forms, NPS, or rankings; a dedicated survey or quiz plugin may suit assessment-focused workflows; and a hosted tool can be embedded when you want responses handled outside WordPress. Choose by the question types, reporting, integrations, and response workflow you need—and compare the exact license or add-on required to get them.

Start with the survey you need to run

Before comparing plugin names, define what respondents will do and what you need to do with their answers. A short customer-satisfaction survey, a public poll, a ranked-choice preference form, a multi-page questionnaire, and a scored quiz place different demands on a tool.

  • Customer satisfaction or NPS: Look for the relevant rating field and a practical way to review results.
  • Ranking or preference research: Confirm that respondents can rank choices in the way your survey requires.
  • Quiz or assessment: Check whether scoring and assessment functions are included in the product or require a paid add-on.
  • Public poll or results page: Verify both how votes are collected and whether results can be displayed to visitors.
  • Lead capture: Check whether the survey can collect the contact details you need and whether that data fits your existing workflow.

Then write down must-haves: question types, conditional logic, anonymous or identified responses, reports, exports, integrations, response limits, and where the data is stored. This makes a plan comparison more useful than a broad “best plugin” ranking.

WordPress survey tools compared

Tool What it offers What to verify
WPForms A general WordPress form builder with a Surveys and Polls add-on. Its documentation covers Likert, NPS, and ranking fields, survey reporting in the WordPress admin, and exporting results. The Surveys and Polls add-on requires Pro or higher. Front-end display of survey results is not built in; WPForms documents exporting an image and embedding it as a workaround. Gravity Forms A general form builder with a Survey Add-On that Gravity Forms describes as providing specialized fields and reporting, including question-level reporting and filtering. Gravity Forms says the Survey Add-On is included with Elite and Nonprofit licenses. Confirm current packaging and whether those licenses fit your site. Gravity Forms survey feature
Quiz and Survey Master (QSM) A dedicated quiz and survey option. The vendor describes a free base plugin and paid premium add-ons. Check the exact add-on needed for your workflow; the base plugin being free does not establish that every desired capability is included. QSM
Other WordPress directory options The WordPress.org survey tag includes products such as Form Maker, Opinion Stage, and Survey Maker, among other options. Directory listings and compatibility indicators can change. Review each plugin’s current listing and feature details. WordPress.org survey plugin directory
Hosted survey tools embedded in WordPress A survey can be built and managed by an external service, then embedded on a WordPress page. Confirm whether responses and reporting stay with the external provider, what its current plan limits are, and whether its data workflow is appropriate for your site. Should you use a dedicated survey plugin or a general form builder?

Not necessarily a dedicated plugin. If you already use a form builder and its survey fields, reports, and exports cover the job, adding a survey-specific product may not be worthwhile. For example, WPForms documents Likert, NPS, and ranking fields through its survey add-on, while Gravity Forms offers a Survey Add-On for specialized fields and reporting.

#1 Best Overall

A dedicated option such as QSM is worth evaluating when quiz or survey workflows are central to the site. The useful distinction is not the label “form” versus “survey”; it is whether the exact product and license support the features and data workflow you need. If reducing plugin count is a priority, first check whether your existing form builder can meet the requirements without another plugin. A reader discussion raises this concern, but one discussion does not establish how common it is. WordPress plugin discussion

Compare the license and the response workflow

Match features to the paid tier or add-on

Survey capabilities can be gated above a plugin’s base tier. WPForms requires Pro or higher for its Surveys and Polls add-on; Gravity Forms says its Survey Add-On is included with Elite and Nonprofit licenses. QSM describes its base plugin as free with paid premium add-ons. These are different packaging models, so comparing base prices alone can produce a misleading result.

Before choosing, map each must-have feature to the product tier or add-on that includes it. Check current vendor pricing and terms directly: prices, license packaging, response limits, site counts, support, and renewal conditions can change.

Know where entries go and how you will use them

Confirm where submissions are stored, which users can access them, what export formats are available, and whether the workflow relies on an external service. Also check integrations with the systems that need the answers. An embedded survey may appear on a WordPress page while its response handling and reporting remain with the hosted provider, so “works on WordPress” does not necessarily mean “managed in WordPress.”

Check whether visitors can see survey results

Front-end results are a separate requirement from collecting and analyzing responses in the site admin. WPForms’ documentation says it has no built-in way to display survey results to visitors and describes exporting a JPG image for embedding. That is a WPForms-specific limitation and workaround; do not assume it applies to other products. Verify the result-display workflow for the tool you select before publishing the survey.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the task: Identify whether you need satisfaction feedback, NPS, rankings, a poll, a long questionnaire, a quiz, or lead capture.
  2. List must-have capabilities: Note question types, conditional logic, anonymous or identified submissions, reporting, exports, front-end result display, and integrations.
  3. Choose the data workflow: Decide whether responses should be managed in WordPress or by an external survey service, and check access and export needs.
  4. Map requirements to a license: Verify which exact plan or add-on provides every required feature, rather than comparing base tiers.
  5. Check current limits and terms: Confirm price, response and site limits, support, renewal terms, and compatibility on the vendor’s current pages or listing.
  6. Test the respondent journey before launch: Preview the survey on the pages and devices your audience will use, and confirm that a test response appears where your team expects it.

Why a blanket “best” ranking is unreliable

The available product descriptions cover different capabilities and license gates, not a common independent benchmark. They do not establish that one option is faster, easier, more secure, or better-performing than another. Treat vendor feature pages and comparison articles as descriptions of their respective products, then verify the required workflow and terms directly before committing.
