There is no universal “best” WordPress security plugin established by the evidence available here: the right choice depends on which risks your current setup leaves uncovered and what you can maintain. For a self-managed site wanting a broad free baseline, Wordfence Free is a practical starting point; if backup and restore are your priority, compare Jetpack Security; and if a breach could quickly cost your business money, weigh paid response and support against the likely cost of downtime.

A plugin is one layer, not a substitute for timely updates, strong passwords, secure hosting, tested backups, and a recovery plan. The comparison below focuses on documented capabilities and trade-offs, not independent protection tests.

What to compare before choosing

Security products use overlapping feature names, but the features do different jobs. A web application firewall (WAF) filters traffic; a malware scanner checks files or site content; vulnerability alerts flag known weaknesses; login controls help resist account takeover; activity logs record changes; and cleanup or incident response helps after an infection. Do not assume two products provide the same protection simply because both advertise a “firewall” or “scan.”

  • Firewall: Check where it runs and how quickly rules are updated. Wordfence describes its firewall as endpoint-based and distinguishes the rule freshness available in Free and Premium.
  • Scanning: Check what is scanned and how often, and whether the plan includes a way to remove detected malware.
  • Login protection: Look for controls such as two-factor authentication (2FA), not just general login monitoring.
  • Recovery: Review backup frequency, retention, restore steps, and whether you can reach backups if WordPress or the plugin is unavailable.
  • Human help: For a revenue-generating site, compare support and response commitments, not only automated alerts.
  • Fit and cost: Confirm multisite compatibility, management effort, plan limits, and renewal pricing for your specific site.

WordPress.org’s plugin directory is useful for checking availability and adoption, not comparative security efficacy. As retrieved September 30, 2026, it listed Wordfence at more than 5 million active installations and both Jetpack and Really Simple Security at more than 3 million. These are changing directory counts, not proof that one plugin protects better than another. See the WordPress.org security plugin directory.

Wordfence: a self-managed security baseline, with paid escalation

Wordfence describes a package built around an endpoint firewall, malware scanning, and login protection. Its current product comparison lists 2FA in the Free offering, while also showing delayed firewall rules and malware signatures compared with Premium. That makes Free a plausible fit for an owner who can manage the site and accept a less current threat feed; it is not equivalent to the paid plan’s freshness.

For a site where interruption or compromise carries greater business risk, Wordfence lists Premium at $149 per year per site, Care at $590 per year, and Response at $1,250 per year on its official plan page, retrieved September 30, 2026. The vendor positions higher tiers for business sites and lists managed security and response features at those levels. Confirm current inclusions, eligibility, and pricing before buying; the listed amounts are not independent assessments of value.

Jetpack Security: a bundled backup and security workflow

Jetpack groups real-time backups, a WAF, scans, activity history, monitoring, and restore features in its Security offering. This bundled approach may suit an owner who values a connected backup-and-security workflow more than choosing separate tools. Before subscribing, check backup retention and the actual restore process, including how you would access a restore if the site itself were down.

Jetpack’s comparison article listed Security starting at $9.99 per month for the first year when retrieved September 30, 2026. That is a first-year starting offer, not a stated renewal price; verify current terms and renewal cost. The vendor also says Security does not currently support WordPress multisite, so multisite owners should confirm the live compatibility details before relying on it.

Jetpack sells the product it compares, so treat its comparison as feature context and verify plan-level details on its product documentation. Review Jetpack Security’s features and Jetpack’s WordPress security plugin comparison.

Other plugins to investigate

The WordPress.org directory lists Sucuri Security, Kadence Security, Really Simple Security, All-In-One Security, and other options. The directory confirms that these plugins are available; the evidence here does not establish a like-for-like comparison of their protection, plan features, support, or prices. Check each plugin’s current official documentation against the feature checklist above rather than inferring equivalence from its category label or installation count.

Security plugin setup still needs a recovery plan

Whichever plugin you choose, reduce the chance that one missed alert or unavailable plugin turns into prolonged downtime. Keep WordPress, themes, and plugins updated; use strong unique passwords and 2FA where available; and ensure your hosting is appropriately secured. Maintain backups independent enough to remain accessible if the site is compromised, and test that you can restore them. Decide who will investigate alerts and what you will do if the site is infected or unreachable.

Those operational steps address gaps a plugin cannot close on its own. A scan is not a guarantee of clean files, and a backup is useful only if it can be restored when needed.
