Neither is a universal winner. A podcast plugin manages publishing on your site; it is not necessarily the service that stores and delivers your audio.
What a WordPress podcast plugin does
A podcast plugin connects episodes on your WordPress site with podcast feeds and on-page listening. Depending on the plugin, it can help create episode posts, provide a player, display subscribe links and manage more than one show. Media hosting is a separate decision: your files need to be stored and delivered somewhere, whether through a podcast host or another provider.
That distinction matters when comparing plugins. A host integration may add syncing or other connected workflows, but it does not mean every plugin feature requires that host. Check the plugin’s current listing and your chosen host’s documentation before moving a show or changing its feed.
Best fit for choosing your own host: Seriously Simple Podcasting
Seriously Simple Podcasting’s WordPress.org listing describes episode publishing, media players, multiple podcast feeds on one site, customizable subscribe links and the ability to use a hosting provider of your choice. That makes it a sensible starting point if you want WordPress to manage podcast publishing without committing to a particular media host.

Connecting the plugin to Castos adds a host-specific workflow. Castos describes management and syncing between WordPress and its hosting platform, as well as options such as importing and managing multiple shows. Those connected capabilities are Castos-dependent; the plugin’s listing does not say that a Castos account is required for all its features. The WordPress.org listing’s release history and tested WordPress compatibility are snapshots that change over time. Check the current listing before installation rather than relying on a version or compatibility number seen in an older comparison.

Best fit for imports and multiple-show workflows: PowerPress
PowerPress’s WordPress.org listing describes publishing and managing one or multiple podcasts from WordPress, audio and video players, subscribe tools, and importing or migrating podcast content. If you are bringing an existing show into WordPress, or plan to manage several shows from one site, those documented functions make PowerPress a strong candidate to evaluate.
The listing also describes additional functions for Blubrry hosting customers, so separate general plugin features from capabilities that depend on using that host. Its FAQ says most themes and plugins are compatible and notes that PowerPress is developed and tested using WordPress’s default themes; this is not a guarantee that it will work with every site configuration. At the time represented by the listing, it showed version 11.17.9, 20,000+ active installations and tested compatibility through WordPress 7.1.2. These are directory snapshots, not performance comparisons or guarantees. Confirm current details on the listing before installing.

- Confirm your media host. Decide where episode files will live and whether you want host-specific syncing or tools.
- Check the show’s feed and migration needs. If you already publish elsewhere, establish how the plugin will import episodes and preserve the feed listeners use.
- Match the site requirements. Identify whether you need multiple feeds, more than one show, audio or video playback, and customizable subscribe links.
- Review current compatibility. On the plugin’s WordPress.org listing, check its latest release, changelog and tested WordPress version before installing. These fields are maintained listings, not a guarantee for every theme or plugin combination.
