There is no single best WordPress photo gallery plugin for every site. FooGallery is a flexible starting point if you want a free gallery with multiple layouts; Modula is worth considering when a creative grid matters most; Envira’s paid editions target users who need photographer-focused workflows; and NextGEN is a specialist option to evaluate for professional photography. The right choice depends on whether you need a simple image grid, a portfolio, video, client proofing, or ecommerce—and on the specific plan, renewal terms, compatibility, and performance on your site.
How to choose a WordPress photo gallery plugin
Start with the job the gallery has to do, not the longest feature list. A basic grid of images has different requirements from a portfolio with albums, a video gallery, a shop gallery, or a client proofing workflow.
- For a straightforward image grid: prioritize a layout that suits your theme, a usable editor, and a lightbox if visitors should enlarge images.
- For a portfolio: check album organization, filtering, captions, and how the grid behaves on mobile.
- For video or ecommerce: confirm that the exact paid plan includes the necessary features and integrations.
- For client proofing or sales: verify the complete workflow, including how clients review images and how purchases or fulfillment are handled.
Before adopting a plugin, test it with your actual theme, image count, captions, layout, filters, and lightbox. A feature being described on a product page does not necessarily mean it is included in the free edition or the plan you intend to buy.

What the performance comparison does—and does not—show
FooPlugins reports a controlled comparison of FooGallery 3.1.32, Envira Gallery Lite 1.12.6, and Modula 2.14.30 on a local WordPress 7.0 site. It built equivalent ten-image galleries using 300×200 cropped thumbnails, three columns, lazy loading, and a lightbox. On June 28–29, 2026, the tested configurations transferred between 371 KB and 675 KB and made 19 to 26 requests. These figures describe those configurations on that local setup; they are not a prediction for every theme, image set, or site.

The comparison was published by FooPlugins, which says: “FooGallery is owned and maintained by FooPlugins.” That relationship matters when interpreting its results: the test included three plugins, did not include NextGEN or Photo Gallery by 10Web, and is not an independent cross-vendor benchmark. Check plan gates, renewals, and site limits
Plugin listings and product pages may describe capabilities across multiple editions. For example, the WordPress.org listings distinguish free and paid features for FooGallery and Envira. Before purchasing, check the vendor’s current pricing page and confirm all of the following for the specific plan:

- Whether the feature you need—such as video, filtering, watermarking, albums, ecommerce, or proofing—is included or requires an add-on.
- How many sites the license covers and whether that limit fits your current and planned sites.
- The renewal price and renewal interval, not only the introductory or first-term price.
- Whether the license includes updates and support, and what happens if it expires.
Exact prices, renewals, site limits, and entitlements vary and are not established here; verify them with the plugin vendor before committing.

Compatibility and maintenance can change. WordPress.org plugin listings provide version and “Tested up to” metadata, so check the live listing when you install or update. For Photo Gallery by 10Web, the dedicated plugin page currently carries a warning that conflicts with the broader image-gallery tag page’s compatibility indication. Prefer the dedicated listing when assessing that plugin and recheck it before installation.

On a staging page or unpublished test page, inspect the gallery at desktop and mobile widths. Check image cropping, spacing, captions, lightbox controls, filters, and whether the gallery still feels responsive with the number of images you plan to publish. A plugin’s default demo layout is not a substitute for testing it with your theme and content.

Ease of use depends on the task and the editor you prefer. Modula’s listing describes drag-and-drop grid building; FooGallery’s free layouts may suit someone who wants to choose a preset; Envira’s Lite edition may be enough for a basic lightbox gallery. Try building the same small gallery in your shortlisted plugins and judge the steps needed to arrange images, set captions, choose a layout, and update it later.

What is the best free WordPress gallery plugin?
If you want a free starting point with several layout options, FooGallery is a reasonable candidate based on its WordPress.org listing, which describes seven free layouts and a built-in lightbox. Envira Gallery Lite is another option if its listed lightbox functionality covers your needs. Check the current listings for edition details, and test the gallery on your own site before choosing; the best free option is the one that provides the workflow you need without pushing you into an unsuitable paid plan.
