Recommended Free Tools
There is no evidence-supported universal winner. The right WordPress image compression plugin depends on whether processing happens on your server or in the cloud, which output formats and delivery features you need, how originals are restored, and whether your quota is measured in megabytes, credits, images, or visits. The comparison below uses feature and plan statements in the plugins’ WordPress.org listings, not a controlled test on identical images and hosting.
What these plugins actually do
“Image compression plugin” can describe several different services. EWWW Image Optimizer documents local, server-side optimization when the host supports its required tools. Imagify sends images to its servers for processing. ShortPixel runs optimization in its cloud. Optimole combines cloud transformations with CDN delivery. Those models affect privacy, hosting load, setup, and what happens when a visitor requests an image.
Comparison at a glance
| Plugin | Documented emphasis | Stated free allowance or tier | Formats and delivery notes | Investigate it if… |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Imagify | Compression and resizing, background bulk optimization, WebP and AVIF conversion, original-image backups | 20 MB of image optimization per month; next-generation conversion is included in the free plan | WebP and AVIF conversion listed in all plans | You want a cloud workflow with a defined monthly MB allowance and restoration of originals |
| ShortPixel Image Optimizer | Lossy, lossless and Glossy modes; background and bulk processing; local backup and restore | 100 free credits per month | WebP and AVIF support listed | You need selectable compression modes, background processing or explicit backup controls |
| EWWW Image Optimizer | Local optimization, resizing, WebP, backups; additional cloud and format features in premium offerings | Unlimited free image optimization, according to its listing | WebP listed among free features; one-click WebP/AVIF conversion listed as premium | Keeping processing on a compatible server is a requirement |
| Optimole | Cloud compression, device-aware resizing, WebP/AVIF, CDN delivery and lazy loading | Free plan for sites up to 2,000 monthly visits | WebP/AVIF delivery and a CDN described; the listing cites more than 450 CDN locations | You want adaptive delivery and a CDN rather than only rewriting files in the media library |
| Smush | Compression, bulk optimization, lazy loading and WebP support in the listing excerpt | Current quota is not established by the evidence available here | WebP support is listed; other plan boundaries should be checked before adoption | You already use Smush’s workflow and can verify its current limits and formats |
How the processing model changes your choice
Local processing: EWWW’s documented approach
EWWW says its local mode uses tools such as jpegtran, optipng, pngout, pngquant, gifsicle and cwebp on your own web server. Its listing states that local operation requires PHP exec() and a compatible host. Confirm those requirements with your host before enabling a large batch. Local processing can avoid sending originals to a third party, but it uses server CPU, storage and execution time; hosting limits may make a bulk run slow or unreliable.
Cloud processing: Imagify and ShortPixel
Imagify describes files being sent to its servers for processing, while ShortPixel describes optimization in its cloud. This can reduce work on a shared host and support background or bulk jobs. It also makes the vendor’s allowance and backup behavior central to your decision: a large existing library may consume the available quota before new uploads are processed.

- ePhoto Z300 works with both Mac and PC : Supports Windows 7/8/10/11 , Mac OS X 10.12~15.x User can download the latest version on Plustek website.
Cloud transformation and delivery: Optimole
Optimole describes transforming images in the cloud and delivering device-appropriate versions through a CDN, with lazy loading. That is a different architecture from compressing a file once in the Media Library: requested dimensions and formats can be adapted for the visitor. The free tier is stated for sites with up to 2,000 monthly visits, so compare that traffic definition with your analytics rather than with an image-count quota.
Quotas are not directly comparable
The headline numbers use different units. Imagify lists 20 MB of free optimization per month; ShortPixel lists 100 free credits per month; EWWW advertises unlimited free image optimization; Optimole’s free plan is tied to up to 2,000 monthly visits. A credit may depend on an image or processing operation, while MB depends on source-file size and visits depend on traffic. Estimate your own monthly uploads, average file size, regeneration activity and visitor volume before treating any allowance as sufficient.
Smush’s current quota is not established by the listing excerpt used for this comparison. Verify the live WordPress.org listing and the plugin’s plan screen before committing a large library to it.

Formats, quality modes and delivery features
WebP and AVIF
Imagify and ShortPixel list WebP and AVIF conversion in their plans. EWWW lists WebP conversion among free features and one-click WebP/AVIF conversion among premium features. Optimole describes WebP/AVIF delivery. A format being supported does not by itself prove that every theme, cache layer or browser path will serve it correctly; check the generated HTML and network requests on representative pages.

ShortPixel lists lossy, lossless and Glossy modes. Glossy is positioned for situations where visual quality matters, such as photography or stores, but the listing is a feature description rather than an independent quality test. Test several source types—photos, transparent PNGs, logos and screenshots—at the settings you intend to use.
Resizing, lazy loading and CDN delivery
Imagify documents resizing and background bulk optimization. Optimole documents device-aware resizing, lazy loading and CDN delivery. Smush’s excerpt mentions lazy loading. These features can change page output beyond byte-level compression, so decide whether you need a delivery stack or only smaller files in the Media Library.

Protect originals before bulk optimization
Compression is reversible only when an original or backup is retained. Imagify describes original-image backup and restoration; ShortPixel describes local backups and restore; EWWW describes local backups. Optimole says originals remain on the server for its transformations and describes restoration for offloaded images. Confirm where those copies live, how much storage they consume, and how restoration works before processing an entire library.
- Make a separate site and database backup, including
wp-content/uploads. - Record the plugin’s current backup and restore settings.
- Process a small representative folder first.
- Inspect desktop and mobile pages, transparent assets, thumbnails and any images used by CSS.
- Only then schedule the full bulk or background job.
A practical selection process
Choose EWWW first when local processing is non-negotiable
Check PHP exec(), the required binaries and your host’s CPU, memory and execution-time limits. If any prerequisite is unavailable, do not assume the local mode will work; investigate its cloud or premium boundaries instead.
Choose Imagify or ShortPixel for cloud compression workflows
Compare the allowance against your real library and upload volume. Imagify’s stated 20 MB monthly free allowance favors smaller recurring workloads; ShortPixel’s 100-credit allowance requires understanding how your images consume credits. ShortPixel is the more explicit fit when selectable lossy, lossless or Glossy modes and local restore controls are priorities.
Rank #4
- Amazing image clarity and detail — 4800 dpi optical resolution (1), ideal for photo enlargements
- Epson ScanSmart software included (4) — easily scan photos, artwork, illustrations, books, documents and more
- One-touch scanning (2) — scan in fewer steps with easy-to-use buttons (2)
- Restore color to faded photos — with one click, Easy Photo Fix technology makes it simple
- Scan books and photo albums — high-rise, removable lid
Choose Optimole when adaptive delivery is the goal
Use it when a CDN, device-aware resizing and lazy loading are part of the desired stack, and your traffic fits the stated 2,000-visit free tier. Check cache behavior, image URLs and fallback delivery alongside your existing CDN or optimization plugin to avoid overlapping transformations.
Keep Smush on the shortlist only after verifying current limits
Its listing excerpt documents compression, bulk optimization, lazy loading and WebP support, but not a current quota. Confirm plan limits, format conversion details, backup behavior and any restrictions on bulk processing before selecting it over the better-documented alternatives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this comparison cannot prove
The listings do not provide a shared image set, identical quality settings, common hosting, or independent page-speed measurements. Therefore they cannot establish which plugin produces the smallest files, the best visual quality or a guaranteed Core Web Vitals improvement. EWWW’s listing claims an average 8% saving for lossless JPG, PNG, GIF and SVG optimization and 60% average saving for WebP conversion; Optimole’s listing claims WebP/AVIF files can be up to 80% smaller than traditional JPEG and PNG. Those are vendor-stated figures, not head-to-head results, and actual savings vary by source image and settings.

Imagify describes its purpose as improving performance, including PageSpeed scores and Core Web Vitals. That is a vendor description, not a promise of a particular score or ranking. Measure your own pages before and after, using the same URLs, devices and cache state.
Bottom line
Select by architecture and workflow, not by a single “best compression” claim. EWWW is the logical investigation starting point for compatible local processing; Imagify and ShortPixel suit cloud-based bulk workflows with different allowance and control models; Optimole is aimed at adaptive CDN delivery; and Smush requires a current check of quotas and plan details. Whichever you choose, preserve originals, test representative images and verify the files visitors actually receive.
