For a self-managed WordPress security suite with a documented free endpoint firewall, start with Wordfence. If your priority is filtering traffic before it reaches your hosting account, compare cloud WAF services such as Sucuri instead. These are different deployment models, not interchangeable entries in a simple “best firewall” ranking. The available comparisons document features and use cases, not independent performance tests, so the choices below are not a tested ranking.
What a WordPress firewall plugin can—and cannot—do
A firewall looks for unwanted or suspicious requests and may block them. Where it sits in the request path affects what it can inspect and when it can act:
- Endpoint firewall: Runs in the WordPress/PHP environment. Wordfence describes its WAF as a PHP-based application-level firewall and documents an Extended Protection configuration that loads it before other code. It can be paired with WordPress-focused features such as login protection, scanning, and rate limiting. See Wordfence Help Documentation.
- Cloud WAF or reverse proxy: Filters traffic at a service in front of the site, before requests reach the origin server. The September 2026 WPPRES comparison describes Sucuri as this type of service and says full protection requires routing traffic through its paid service; a plugin alone is more limited. That is a secondary-source summary, so check Sucuri’s current service scope and setup requirements before buying.
Neither model replaces the rest of site security. Keep WordPress, themes, and plugins updated; use secure hosting; maintain tested backups; and have a recovery plan. A firewall may reduce some risks, but it cannot make vulnerable software or an untested backup safe. See the WPPRES 2026 comparison for this operational caveat.
How the options compare
The table separates firewall placement from adjacent security features. Feature descriptions for products other than Wordfence come from the dated WPPRES comparison and, where noted, a competing vendor’s July 2026 feature matrix; they are not independent product tests. Exact current tiers and capabilities should be confirmed with each vendor.

Wordfence: the clearest documented free endpoint option
Wordfence’s help documentation lists its Free offering with an endpoint firewall, security scanner, login security, alerts, and centralized management. The firewall runs in the PHP application environment rather than acting as a cloud reverse proxy. Its Extended Protection setup is intended to load the firewall before other code, and its documentation also covers brute-force protection and rate limiting. Those adjacent controls are useful, but they are not all the same thing as request inspection.
Free versus paid: the practical difference is update timing and added features
Wordfence’s official product comparison, published February 4, 2026, says the Free version receives firewall rules and malware signatures after a 30-day delay; Premium receives them in real time. Premium also adds an IP blocklist, country blocking, and audit history. These are Wordfence-stated plan differences, not an independent measure of how much protection a given site will gain. Paid plans and listed prices
In that February 4, 2026 article, Wordfence listed Premium at $149 per year per site, Care at $590 per year, and Response at $1,250 per year. These are vendor-listed prices from that publication date, not a guarantee of the current checkout price. The plans move beyond software access toward increasingly hands-on support and response commitments; check the linked plan page for the exact scope before purchasing.
Choose by the risk and operating model you need
Choose an endpoint suite when you want controls inside WordPress
Wordfence is the most clearly documented fit in this comparison if you want a WordPress/PHP firewall plus scanning and login features in one self-managed product. Its Free tier gives a no-cost way to use those documented endpoint tools, while the paid tier’s stated distinction includes real-time rather than delayed rules and signatures. You remain responsible for configuring the site, reviewing alerts, keeping software current, and maintaining recovery options.

Choose a cloud WAF when filtering before the server is the priority
Sucuri is the named cloud WAF option in the available comparisons. Traffic routing is central to the choice: the WPPRES comparison says full protection requires the paid service to sit in the traffic path. Before committing, confirm the current routing steps, plan inclusions, compatibility, and what happens to traffic if the service is unavailable; those details are not established by the cited summary.
Choose hardening or cleanup tools for the job they actually address
Solid Security’s cited positioning emphasizes account hardening and WordPress-level rules, while MalCare’s cited positioning emphasizes scanning and paid cleanup. These capabilities can matter, but neither category should be treated as proof of a deep request-inspection firewall. The cited material also cautions that hardening is distinct from full malware cleanup. Check each product’s current official documentation if a particular firewall capability, cleanup commitment, or plan limit is decisive.

What the Wordfence threat figures do—and do not—tell you
Wordfence’s 2024 Annual WordPress Security Report, published in 2025, attributes 96% of vulnerabilities disclosed in its dataset to plugin vulnerabilities and reports 8,223 vulnerabilities published in Wordfence Intelligence’s database in 2024, roughly 68% more than in 2023. These are Wordfence Intelligence figures and methodology, not a universal measurement of every WordPress vulnerability.
The same report says Wordfence blocked and logged over 54 billion malicious requests and blocked over 55 billion password attacks in 2024. Those counts describe Wordfence’s activity, not all attacks against WordPress sites. What to check before installing or routing traffic
- Identify the deployment point. Decide whether you want a control inside WordPress/PHP or a cloud service in front of the origin server.
- Separate the feature labels. Check whether the feature you need is request inspection, login blocking, rate limiting, bot controls, scanning, vulnerability alerts, cleanup, or support. A product’s broad “security” label does not mean every item is included.
- Check freshness and tier limits. For Wordfence, the documented Free-versus-Premium difference includes delayed versus real-time rules and signatures. For other products, confirm the current official plan details rather than relying only on comparison summaries.
- Plan for operations. Consider who will tune settings, investigate false positives, manage traffic routing, respond to alerts, and resolve compatibility issues.
- Keep recovery independent. Test backups and define how to restore the site. A firewall or cleanup feature is not a backup strategy.
