WooCommerce is the most flexible starting point for a WordPress store selling physical goods or a mixed catalog. For downloadable files, Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) is designed around digital delivery; for memberships, subscriptions, and courses, MemberPress is a closer fit. Shopify and BigCommerce are hosted commerce services that can connect to a WordPress site when managed operations or broader sales channels matter more than running the whole store inside WordPress.
How the options compare
| Option | Best fit | Operating model | Pricing information in 2026 comparison coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce | Physical goods, mixed catalogs, and custom store workflows | WordPress plugin; the store owner manages hosting and site maintenance | Not stated in the cited comparison coverage. |
| Easy Digital Downloads | Downloadable products such as ebooks, software, photos, music, and templates | WordPress plugin focused on digital sales and delivery | Free core plugin; paid plans start at $99.50 per year, according to the vendor’s 2026 comparison. |
| MemberPress | Paid memberships, subscriptions, and courses | WordPress plugin for gated access and member management | Not stated in the cited comparison coverage. |
| Shopify for WordPress | Publishers who want hosted Shopify commerce alongside WordPress content | Hosted commerce service connected to WordPress | Shopify’s 2026 comparison lists Starter from $5 per month. Confirm regional pricing and transaction terms with Shopify. |
| BigCommerce for WordPress | Stores with multichannel, point-of-sale, or broader operational needs | Hosted commerce service connected to WordPress | Not stated in Shopify’s 2026 comparison coverage. |
These are different kinds of products, not five interchangeable plugins. A self-managed WordPress store offers direct control over the site and its extensions, but puts maintenance responsibilities on the owner. Hosted options move more commerce operations to a service provider while WordPress can remain the content layer.
WooCommerce: the general-purpose choice for physical and mixed catalogs
Start with WooCommerce if the store needs physical products, varied product types, custom workflows, or a broad selection of extensions. WPBeginner’s 2026 comparison calls it the best overall WordPress e-commerce plugin, citing flexibility, features, and scalability; that is an editorial assessment, not the result of a controlled performance test.

Its flexibility comes with upkeep: the store owner remains responsible for hosting, updates, compatibility, security, and backups. Those duties matter when choosing between a self-managed setup and a hosted commerce service. WooCommerce can also coexist with Easy Digital Downloads, according to WooCommerce’s official article, so the choice need not be exclusive when a store has distinct physical and digital operations.
#1 Best Overall
Easy Digital Downloads: built for downloadable products
EDD is the more direct fit when the product is a file rather than a shipment: software, ebooks, photography, music, templates, and similar downloads. Its focus is useful when delivery controls and licensing matter more than physical inventory.
The WordPress.org listing describes secure download controls that include unique links, expiration times, and download limits. EDD’s vendor comparison lists a free core plugin and paid plans starting at $99.50 per year in its 2026 comparison. Treat that as the listed starting paid-plan price, not a guarantee of the total cost for a particular store or feature set.
Rank #2
MemberPress: for paid access, memberships, and courses
Choose MemberPress when customers are paying for recurring access to gated content or courses rather than buying a conventional catalog of physical products. Current comparison coverage describes member management, individual landing pages and assets, and coupon-code creation.
Recommended Free Tools
For a standard physical-product store, a general commerce plugin is usually the more natural starting point. MemberPress’s fit is strongest when controlling access and managing members are central to what the business sells.
Rank #3
Shopify for WordPress: hosted commerce with WordPress content
Shopify’s WordPress integration suits publishers who want to keep WordPress as the content layer while using Shopify’s hosted checkout and commerce operations. Shopify’s 2026 comparison lists a Starter plan beginning at $5 per month. That starting figure does not establish the price for every region or the applicable transaction terms; verify both with Shopify before choosing a plan.
This model reduces the amount of commerce infrastructure the site owner runs directly in WordPress, but it is not the same as managing a store entirely through a WordPress plugin. Consider it when hosted operations are a priority and the integration meets the store’s checkout and product needs.
Rank #4
BigCommerce for WordPress: consider it for wider channel operations
BigCommerce for WordPress is worth evaluating when a store’s requirements extend beyond a basic WordPress catalog, particularly when point-of-sale (POS) or multichannel operations are important. Shopify’s 2026 comparison describes POS integrations, multichannel capabilities, analytics, SEO tools, and PCI compliance. It also reports sales in more than 100 countries and more than 250 payment methods; those figures are claims in Shopify’s comparison, not an independent assessment of current availability for every merchant or market.
Before committing, confirm supported channels, plan limits, payment availability, and pricing with BigCommerce. The comparison coverage does not establish BigCommerce plan prices or the precise availability of every listed feature.
Best Value
Choose by the work your store needs to do
- Physical products or a mixed catalog: Begin with WooCommerce if you want a WordPress-based store and are prepared to manage its hosting and maintenance.
- Downloadable files: Consider EDD when protected delivery controls are central to selling files.
- Memberships or courses: Consider MemberPress when gated access and member management define the product.
- Hosted checkout and operations: Consider Shopify’s WordPress integration if you want Shopify commerce alongside WordPress content.
- Multichannel or POS needs: Evaluate BigCommerce for WordPress, then verify the channels and features your business specifically requires.
Before installing or subscribing, map the requirements that can change the decision: payment gateways, subscriptions, taxes and refunds, inventory and channel synchronization, extensions, and who will handle updates and security. Also compare total recurring costs, not just a starting plan price: paid extensions, hosting, licenses, and transaction fees may affect the final choice, and the figures listed above do not establish those totals.
