There is no single replacement for the Wayback Machine. For a missing old page, check Archive.today and Memento, then try Common Crawl. For a stable citation, use Perma.cc; for interactive-site capture, look at Webrecorder’s Browsertrix tools; and for a private archive you control, consider ArchiveBox. Visualping is for future change alerts, not recovering pages that disappeared before monitoring began.
Choose an alternative by what you need to do
| Need | Good place to start | What it does—and does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Find an old snapshot | Archive.today / Archive.is, Memento, Common Crawl | May locate a copy already captured elsewhere. None can guarantee a match for every URL or date. |
| Preserve a citation now | Perma.cc | Creates a record and a stable Perma Link when you submit a page; it is not a broad historical search engine. |
| Capture an interactive website | Browsertrix and other Webrecorder tools | Designed for browser-based capture and replay of complex pages; capture still depends on access and site behavior. |
| Keep a private archive | ArchiveBox | Self-hosted software for pages you capture or import; it cannot retrieve pages nobody saved. |
| Track future changes | Visualping | Checks pages after you set up monitoring and sends alerts; it is not a public archive of arbitrary past pages. |
| Search a large historical dataset | Common Crawl | Offers crawl indexes and machine-readable web data, rather than a simple Wayback-style replay interface. |
| Manage an institutional collection | Archive-It or Browsertrix | Archive-It is a hosted institutional collection service; Browsertrix suits browser-based capture workflows. |
The Wayback Machine remains a sensible first stop for broad historical coverage. The alternatives below complement it: they differ in what they capture, how you search, who controls the files, and whether they work backward or forward in time.
What kind of Wayback alternative do you need?
- Historical lookup: Find a copy that an archive or crawl already collected.
- On-demand preservation: Save a page now and get a link or record to cite later.
- Private archiving: Store copies under your own account, server, or organizational policies.
- Bulk research: Query large crawl datasets or process archived records programmatically.
- Change monitoring: Start checking a live page now so you can detect later changes.
These jobs are not interchangeable. A monitoring service cannot recover a page that vanished last year, and a local archiver is not a search engine for pages captured by other people.

Best tools for finding an old page
Archive.today / Archive.is: a quick second check
Archive.today is useful for checking whether a public page has an on-demand snapshot outside the Wayback Machine. Search the exact URL, and treat a result as a capture of that page—not evidence that the entire site was preserved. Review whether images, embeds, comments, scripts, and linked pages are actually present. Capture fidelity and availability can vary; it is not equivalent to a managed institutional archive.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
If one of the service’s domains is unavailable, an alternate domain may work, but the current interface and availability should be confirmed at the service itself. Do not assume a visible page means its video, interactive features, or associated assets were saved.
Memento: look across participating archives
Memento Time Travel is an archive-discovery layer: an aggregator can point to a capture held by a participating archive, but it does not create one. Its results depend on the archives it can reach. If the endpoint is unavailable, try the underlying archives directly rather than treating an empty result as proof that no copy exists.
Common Crawl: for indexed crawl records and research
Common Crawl describes a corpus of web data collected regularly since 2008, including raw page data, metadata, and text extracts. Its public data and index files are free to access, though processing large collections can require storage, bandwidth, and compute. It is most useful when you need crawl records or data for research, not a polished page-replay experience.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the Common Crawl URL Index and look for the target URL or a pattern such as
example.com/*. - Choose a crawl collection and inspect the matching record. The index documentation points to the CDX server API and archive-specific endpoints.
- For a programmatic retrieval, use the record’s WARC filename, byte offset, and length to request the relevant byte range from the public data store.
- Decompress and parse the WARC response, then reconstruct the page from the HTTP payloads and any separately captured assets.
A URL match means that crawl recorded something for the URL; it does not guarantee a complete, visually faithful page or the assets needed to reproduce it.
Regional and subject-specific archives
If the page belongs to a country, public institution, news outlet, or social platform, look for a relevant national or regional web archive, library collection, government archive, news archive, or platform-specific collection. These sources can be valuable for their own coverage, but they are not universal replacements for a general web archive.

Best tools for saving pages from now on
Perma.cc: preserve a citation
Perma.cc is designed to preserve pages submitted by users and provide a unique Perma Link for citation. It suits legal, academic, policy, and journalistic work where a stable reference matters more than searching a vast historical index. Anyone can create an account; free unlimited use may be available to eligible academic libraries and courts, while other users may need a paid plan. Check current eligibility and pricing with Perma.cc.
- Create or sign in to an account and submit the source URL.
- Select Create Perma Link and wait for processing.
- Review the resulting record to see what was captured.
- Use the Perma Link alongside the original URL in your citation.
- If preservation fails, consult Perma’s documentation for its fallback process, including an image or PDF upload where applicable.
A stable link is useful, but review the record: a failed or incomplete capture is not repaired by citing it. Perma.cc’s stated purpose is preservation for citation, not a guarantee of legal admissibility or an independent historical search.

Webrecorder provides open-source web-archiving tools, including Browsertrix for automated browser-based workflows and ArchiveWeb.page and ReplayWeb.page for capture and replay. These tools are a better fit than a basic HTML saver when a page depends on JavaScript or interaction. Browsertrix can capture authorized logged-in content, subject to technical limits and privacy obligations.
Browser automation may still fail on CAPTCHAs, two-factor authentication, rate limits, geofencing, expired sessions, or applications that depend on a live backend. Hosted Browsertrix plans and limits can change; check the current product information before choosing a plan. For a single text-heavy page, this tooling may be more involved than necessary.
ArchiveBox: maintain your own collection
ArchiveBox is open-source, self-hosted software for collecting web pages and other inputs, including URLs, browser history, bookmarks, and RSS. Its outputs can include HTML, JavaScript, PDFs, media, and other representations. The current project quick start documents Docker Compose and support for Ubuntu, macOS, and Docker on amd64 and arm64.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

The documented Docker Compose quick start is:
mkdir -p ~/archivebox/data && cd ~/archivebox
curl -fsSL 'https://docker-compose.archivebox.io' > docker-compose.yml
docker compose pull
docker compose up -d --wait
docker compose exec archivebox archivebox manage createsuperuser
docker compose exec archivebox archivebox add 'https://example.com'
Replace https://example.com with the page you are authorized to archive. Keep backups separate from the running instance, and do not expose its local web or administrative interface publicly without authentication and security hardening. You are responsible for storage, security, updates, backups, and replay; the software cannot recover a page that was never captured.
Archive-It: hosted institutional collections
Archive-It is a managed service for institutional web collections, with WARC-based preservation and access integrations. It is intended for organizations such as libraries, universities, archives, and governments, rather than as a free one-page saver. Pricing is institutional and should be requested from the provider.
Best tool for watching a page change
Visualping monitors pages after setup and sends alerts; it does not retrieve arbitrary old snapshots. Its pricing page, as seen August 18, 2026, listed a free tier at $0 per month with 150 checks across five pages and a 60-minute shortest interval. The same page listed Personal 1K at $14 per month or $120 per year, Personal 5K at $35 per month or $300 per year, and Personal 10K at $70 per month or $600 per year; annual figures are the listed annual prices. Verify current prices and limits before subscribing.
The service lists visual, text, and element detection, AI change summaries, and API access across plans; Business plans add team features and integrations. It also describes actions such as logging in, clicking, typing, or executing scripts before a check. A monitor can still miss content that loads unpredictably or requires complex interaction. The free allowance can also be consumed quickly: five pages checked frequently use the monthly checks faster than five pages checked occasionally.

- Find the exact address. Check browser history, bookmarks, email, social posts, RSS feeds, citations, page source, or search results. If you only know the title, search the live web for copies, excerpts, or references that reveal the URL.
- Try URL variants. Test HTTP and HTTPS, with and without
www, a trailing slash, likely file extensions, and mobile paths. Remove tracking parameters and session identifiers. - Search the Wayback Machine by URL. Try the exact address and, where useful, a domain wildcard such as
https://web.archive.org/web/*/example.com/*. Check nearby dates if you do not know when the page was captured. - Check Archive.today and Memento. Search the exact URL in Archive.today, then use Memento to look for captures held by participating archives.
- Try Common Crawl. Use its URL index for the page or a domain pattern. If you find a record, retrieving and interpreting the WARC data may require technical work.
- Search likely specialist collections. Check national, library, government, news, or platform-specific archives where relevant.
- Look for derivatives. Search for syndicated copies, RSS excerpts, PDFs, quoted passages, screenshots, repositories, or reporting that reproduced the original text.
The Wayback Machine’s help documentation explains that robots.txt and direct requests can affect page availability: Using The Wayback Machine. A missing result in one archive does not prove the page never existed.

Why an archived page may be missing or broken
- URL mismatch: The remembered address may differ by protocol, subdomain, slash, mobile path, or parameters.
- It was not captured: An archive may never have crawled the page, or a user may never have submitted it for preservation.
- Access or policy limits: Crawling rules, owner requests, legal restrictions, paywalls, logins, or anti-bot systems can affect availability.
- Dynamic content: An archive may have saved a page shell before JavaScript populated it. A browser-based capture may help, but it can still fail if the live backend or session is unavailable.
- Missing assets: The HTML may survive while images, stylesheets, scripts, audio, or video do not. A player frame is not proof that the media itself was preserved.
- Stateful interactions: Forms, comments, maps, and application features may depend on live services or account state that a snapshot cannot recreate.
Social-media posts are particularly difficult: they may be deleted, access-controlled, rate-limited, or rendered only after scripts run. A screenshot can preserve what appeared on screen without preserving the post’s underlying metadata, replies, or context.
Preserving a complete website takes more than saving one page
A one-page snapshot and a site archive have different scopes. For a site or interactive experience, decide what paths, assets, dates, and user states matter, then test the capture rather than assuming that a successful URL submission produced a complete record.
- Scope: Set crawl depth and page boundaries; a starting URL alone does not define the whole site.
- Fidelity: Check HTML, images, CSS, JavaScript, media, forms, and interactions that matter to the record.
- Access: Capture only content you are authorized to access. Logged-in capture may expose personal data and carries privacy and data-protection responsibilities.
- Format and custody: Keep available archive packages and capture metadata. Where evidence matters, record timestamps, hashes, original URLs, screenshots, and handling history.
- Storage and recovery: Back up local or hosted collections separately and make sure you can replay or export them later.
Webrecorder tools are suited to browser-based capture of complex pages; ArchiveBox gives technical users control over a self-hosted collection; Archive-It is oriented toward managed institutional collections. None removes the need to define scope and verify the result.
Evidence, privacy, and access limits
An archive timestamp shows that a service recorded a representation at a particular time; by itself, it does not establish authorship, completeness, lack of alteration, or legal admissibility. For high-stakes work, preserve the original URL, timestamp, capture metadata, screenshots, downloaded archive package, hashes, and chain-of-custody notes. Compare independent records when possible: different archives may have captured different dates, redirects, URL variants, or page states.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not use archiving tools to bypass access controls. Capture only material you are authorized to access, and consider copyright, personal information, service terms, and applicable law. A private archive can improve control over retained data, but it does not automatically make a record independently trustworthy.
