There is no single best VPN for every Android user in 2026. RTINGS names Mullvad its best tested Android VPN, Tom’s Guide recommends NordVPN, and Top10VPN ranks ExpressVPN first. Those are publication-specific rankings using different methods—not a settled universal verdict. For privacy-focused use, compare Mullvad and Proton VPN; for a speed-oriented choice, consider NordVPN’s attributed test results; and if you want a free plan, examine Proton VPN’s limits before relying on it for streaming.
Which VPN is best for Android?
Choose according to what you need the VPN to do and what evidence you trust. A VPN routes the connection between your Android phone and a VPN endpoint through the provider’s service. That can help protect traffic on the path between the phone and endpoint, but it does not make you anonymous, secure every app or account, or guarantee access to a streaming service.
| Priority | Option to consider | What the cited source supports |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy-focused Android pick | Mullvad | RTINGS names it its best Android VPN among those tested in its guide updated August 18, 2026. Mullvad’s Android page lists security assessments; those references do not, by themselves, establish the scope or results of every assessment. |
| Free plan and Android features | Proton VPN | Proton describes a free tier, open-source app, third-party audits, leak protection, alternative routing and split tunneling. Its Android page says popular streaming services require VPN Plus or Proton Unlimited. |
| Speed-oriented choice | NordVPN | Tom’s Guide recommends it for Android. NordVPN’s summary of a June 2026 test reports favorable results in one round for five providers; it is the provider’s account of a third-party test. |
| Another reviewed Android option | Surfshark | Tom’s Guide describes Android features and streaming-test observations. These are the publication’s findings, not a guarantee of future app behavior or service access. |
| Alternative top-ranked option | ExpressVPN | Tom’s Guide recommends it in its Android coverage, while Top10VPN ranks it first. Rankings reflect each publisher’s own method. |

Best VPN for Android privacy: what to verify
A VPN provider can process connection data and metadata, so the provider’s privacy terms and independent evidence matter. A listing in Google Play is not proof that a service is trustworthy: TechRadar’s July 29, 2026 investigation analyzed 3,392 Android VPN apps with more than 1,000 downloads each and found that 1,210, or 40.8%, passed its stated main validity checks. That figure describes TechRadar’s sample and checks, not every VPN app or an industry-wide regulator’s assessment.

- High-speed access to over 3,200 VPN servers in 150+ locations
- No logs are recorded, verified in a third-party audit
- Customer support via 24/7 live chat, email, and phone
- Encrypted connections for every device you own, from one account
- Advanced-standard encryption (AES-256)
- Read the data terms. Look for a clear explanation of what information is collected, retained and shared, and how long it is kept.
- Check independent evidence. Confirm what an audit or assessment covered and when it took place. An app audit, infrastructure review and no-logs assessment are not interchangeable.
- Test leak safeguards. Look for DNS and IP leak protection and understand how the app’s kill switch behaves if its VPN connection drops.
- Review permissions and publisher identity. Install only the app published by the service you intend to use, from its official site or a verified app-store listing. Consider whether requested permissions make sense for the features you use.
- Keep the app updated. Check the provider’s Android support and update record, rather than assuming installation is a one-time security decision.
RTINGS includes leak protection, kill-switch function, data terms, necessary permissions and routine audits among its selection considerations. TechRadar’s investigation highlights why app-store presence alone is not enough. RTINGS’ Android guide; TechRadar’s investigation, July 29, 2026.
Is a free Android VPN safe?
“Free” describes a price, not a privacy standard. Assess a free service by the same criteria as a paid one: provider identity, data terms, app permissions, leak safeguards, independent assessments and update history. A free plan may also have feature limits that make it unsuitable for a particular use.
Proton VPN’s free option
Proton’s Android page and Google Play listing describe a free tier alongside premium features. Proton says popular streaming services are available only with VPN Plus or Proton Unlimited, so its free plan should not be assumed to provide streaming access. The Play listing’s data-safety information is supplied by the developer; Google says disclosures may vary by use, region and age, and may change. Check the current listing and plan terms before installing or subscribing.
Rank #2
- Strong encryption for top-grade security.
- Unlimited VPN data and no speed limits.
- Protect up to 10 devices with one account.
- 7,400+ servers covering 220+ locations for turbo speeds.
- Double VPN for increased privacy.
Proton says its Android app is open source and third-party audited, and lists DNS and IPv6 leak protection, alternative routing and split tunneling. It offers the app through Google Play, F-Droid and a GitHub APK; choose a source linked from Proton’s official page. These are provider statements about its app and distribution, not a guarantee that a VPN makes all phone activity private.

How the leading Android VPN options differ
Mullvad: privacy-oriented features
RTINGS’ guide, updated August 18, 2026, selects Mullvad as its best Android VPN among those tested. It describes account-number sign-up, privacy-preserving payment options, a kill switch, obfuscation, multi-hop, DNS filtering and DAITA. This is a reviewer’s description of the service and its features, not a guarantee of anonymity.
Rank #3
- Compatible on Fire TV and Fire TV Sticks on Vega OS
- Access to 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries
- Support for all the major streaming providers
- Fast VPN connection in one tap
- Secure VPN protection with strict no-logs policy
Mullvad’s Android page points to a Leviathan security assessment dated February 2026 and an X41 D-Sec app audit dated November 2024. The landing page names those assessments; consult the assessment documents for their scope and findings rather than treating the mention itself as a complete audit result. NordVPN: performance evidence with a narrow scope
Tom’s Guide recommends NordVPN for Android based on its own testing. NordVPN’s August 10, 2026 summary of Artifact Security’s June 2026 test says NordVPN earned the only Platinum rating and had the fastest Android download and upload speeds among five providers. The test, described as “round 1,” measured throughput, stability, latency and time to connect; NordVPN notes that its report reflects a single testing round. Treat the results as a limited comparison, not proof that NordVPN will be fastest on every phone, network or future test.

Rank #4
- Kill switch: Network protection stops all internet traffic if the VPN can’t connect
- Split tunneling: Select which apps will use the VPN and which apps won’t when your device is connected to ExpressVPN
- Widget: Connect/disconnect the VPN, change location, or check VPN status
- Auto-connects when you join or rejoin an untrusted Wi-Fi network
- Auto-reconnects if your VPN connection is interrupted
Proton VPN: flexible installation and routing features
In addition to its free-plan restrictions, Proton’s official Android page describes split tunneling and alternative routing. Those can be useful if you want to choose which apps use the VPN or need an alternate connection route. Confirm the current app behavior and plan details on Proton’s page before depending on a particular feature.
Surfshark and ExpressVPN: compare the features you need
Tom’s Guide describes Surfshark’s Android app as offering a kill switch, split tunneling, multi-hop, CleanWeb, GPS spoofing and NoBorders, and reports results from its own streaming tests. The guide also recommends ExpressVPN in its 2026 Android coverage; Top10VPN ranks ExpressVPN first. These rankings and feature observations belong to those publications and may change as apps and services are updated.

A VPN can encrypt the connection from the phone to the VPN endpoint, helping shield that leg of traffic from people on the same local Wi-Fi network. Protection depends on a working VPN connection and the provider’s implementation; a kill switch may reduce exposure if the tunnel drops, but check how it functions on your Android device.

A VPN does not replace HTTPS, safe account practices, app updates or careful handling of sensitive information. It also does not prevent a website or service you log into from identifying your account, and it does not guarantee that every app routes traffic through the VPN. Use split tunneling or app-specific routing only when you understand which traffic is included and excluded.
How to choose and set up an Android VPN
- Decide what matters most. Choose among privacy evidence, a usable free plan, Android features, speed evidence or a specific streaming requirement.
- Compare the evidence, not just the ranking. Check the date and scope of audits and performance tests. Reviewers use different criteria, and one test round cannot establish performance across all networks.
- Check price and renewal terms directly. Costs can vary by country, tax and billing term, and promotional first-term prices may differ from renewal rates. No current price comparison is included here; review the provider’s checkout for the region and term you intend to buy.
- Install from a verified source. Use the provider’s official download page or confirm the app publisher on Google Play or another source linked by the provider. Avoid lookalike apps and websites.
- Review settings after installation. Enable the safeguards you need, learn what happens when the connection fails, and decide whether split tunneling should include or exclude particular apps.
- Check operation before relying on it. Confirm the app shows an active connection and review its leak-protection guidance. Recheck after app or Android updates, or when changing networks.
For simultaneous-device limits, current regional pricing, renewal rates and service availability, consult each provider’s current terms; they are not established consistently across the cited comparisons.
