There is no single best VPN for everyone. For most people, NordVPN is the strongest all-purpose choice for speed, ease of use and streaming. Proton VPN is the better privacy-first option, Proton VPN Free is the best reputable free plan, Surfshark suits households with many devices, Mullvad favors privacy purists, and ExpressVPN is a polished premium alternative.
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and its server and replaces your public IP address. It does not make you anonymous, stop malware or guarantee access to every streaming catalog. Choose based on the evidence and trade-offs that matter to you—not just a “per month” promotional price.

Best VPN overall: NordVPN
NordVPN is the easiest default recommendation if you want one app for everyday Wi-Fi protection, streaming, travel and several devices. Current 2026 coverage emphasizes its speed, straightforward apps, broad server coverage and reliable streaming performance. Security.org reported less than 6% download and upload slowdown in its January 2026 tests, including distant servers; that result depends on the test connection, protocol, device and location.

NordVPN says Deloitte Lithuania completed its sixth no-logs assurance engagement at the end of 2025, covering standard, Double VPN, obfuscated and Onion Over VPN servers. That is useful recurring evidence, but an assurance engagement is not the same as a fully public, unrestricted audit report. NordVPN advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee; check the checkout channel’s terms.
Choose it if: you prioritize convenience, speed and streaming. Choose another service if: publicly inspectable apps, minimal signup information or a free tier matter more than mainstream polish.
Best VPN for privacy: Proton VPN
Proton VPN combines open-source apps, Swiss headquarters, a free tier and published audit material. Proton says its 2026 no-logs review by Securitum found no evidence of logging browsing activity, DNS queries, destinations, traffic content or identifiable connection data in the reviewed infrastructure. Read the audit summary and the no-logs policy; these remain company-published claims about a defined review scope.
Paid Proton VPN Plus includes features such as Secure Core, NetShield and more locations. Proton lists up to 10 simultaneous devices on Plus. Its free plan is intentionally limited but unusually usable: unlimited bandwidth, no ads and no activity-log selling, with servers in 10 countries and one connection according to Proton’s current plan information.
Best for: readers who value open-source software and publicly available privacy evidence. Trade-off: a large commercial network, premium streaming locations and advanced features require the paid plan.

Best free VPN: Proton VPN Free
For basic protection on public Wi-Fi or to reduce ISP visibility, Proton VPN Free is the clearest reputable starting point. It does not impose a data cap according to Proton, but it has fewer countries, one simultaneous connection and limited premium functions. Free access is not a dependable choice for demanding streaming, many household devices or all P2P use.
Avoid unknown “free VPN” apps merely because they have many downloads. Some rely on aggressive advertising, data monetization, weak security or questionable ownership. A free tier from a provider that publishes its policies and audits is a different category from an unfamiliar app.

Surfshark is a strong value candidate for households because it markets unlimited simultaneous connections. That means many devices can use one account; it does not mean unlimited bandwidth without congestion or that every router and device performs identically.
Its low monthly equivalent generally comes from a long, prepaid term. Compare the total charged today, taxes, renewal price, add-ons and refund rules at the official pricing page. Surfshark provides a 2025 ISAE 3000 no-logs assurance report, but the report describes the reviewed systems and period. Compare that scope directly with Proton’s public material rather than treating every “no logs” label as equivalent.
Best VPN for privacy purists: Mullvad
Mullvad is a better fit when minimizing identity exposure at signup and keeping pricing simple matters more than streaming breadth. Its privacy-focused model and flat pricing appeal to technically minded users. Current reviews also note a smaller network and less consistent streaming than the largest providers.

Verify current payment methods, simultaneous-connection limits, port-forwarding policy and server availability before subscribing; these details can change. Mullvad is not the obvious choice for a large family seeking the broadest streaming coverage.

ExpressVPN offers polished apps, broad platform support and a well-developed trust center. It states that it does not retain browsing history, traffic destinations, DNS queries, assigned IP addresses or other online-activity logs, and publishes transparency reports. Those are first-party statements, so consider the scope and public availability of independent reports as well as the policy.
It is often priced above value providers. Select it for usability, travel and a premium support experience—not simply because a promotional “per month” figure looks low.
How to choose a VPN
- Privacy evidence (25%): look for current infrastructure audits, clear scope, open-source apps and transparent legal disclosures.
- Security fundamentals (20%): require a kill switch, DNS and IPv6 leak protection, modern protocols and automatic protection on untrusted Wi-Fi.
- Performance (15%): evaluate nearby-server speed, latency, consistency and test methodology—not one headline maximum.
- Usability (10%): check app quality, support, router compatibility and simple server selection.
- Streaming and P2P (10%): treat results as changeable. P2P must be allowed on the plan and server you use.
- Price transparency (10%): record total upfront cost, term, renewal price, taxes, add-ons and refund period.
- Ownership and jurisdiction (5%): consider corporate control and legal obligations, but do not treat a country label alone as proof of privacy.
What a VPN actually protects
A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server, hides your normal public IP from websites and reduces what your ISP or public-Wi-Fi operator can see about destinations. The VPN provider can technically observe traffic passing through its infrastructure, which is why logging policy, audits and technical design matter.
A VPN does not prevent phishing, malware, browser fingerprinting, cookies or tracking. A logged-in website still knows your account. It does not provide a streaming subscription, legalize copyright infringement or protect devices without the VPN app or router configuration. Tor, strong device security and compartmentalized accounts are more appropriate for some anonymity threat models.

Protocols and features that matter
- WireGuard: modern and generally fast; a good default.
- OpenVPN: mature and flexible when compatibility matters.
- IKEv2/IPsec: useful on some mobile devices and changing networks.
- Kill switch: blocks traffic if the tunnel drops; test it instead of assuming it works.
- DNS and IPv6 leak protection: prevents parts of a connection bypassing the tunnel.
- Split tunneling: sends selected apps outside the VPN, useful for banking or printers but easy to misconfigure.
- Multi-hop and obfuscation: can help specific threat models, usually at the cost of speed and latency.
- Ad and malware blocking: helpful filtering, not a replacement for antivirus, updates or phishing awareness.
Setup and leak-testing checklist
- Subscribe through the official provider site and note the refund deadline.
- Install the official app, sign in and grant VPN permission.
- Connect to the nearest suitable server.
- Enable the kill switch and automatic protection on untrusted Wi-Fi.
- Check your IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, DNS resolvers and browser WebRTC exposure.
- If a leak appears, enable the app’s leak controls, disable unsupported IPv6 temporarily, reconnect and test again.
- Test the kill switch by changing networks while connected; traffic should stop during reconnection.
Streaming, gaming and torrenting caveats
Streaming companies actively block VPN address ranges. A service may work on one server and fail on another tomorrow. Reconnect to a different server in the same country, restart the app, clear cookies, check location permissions and contact support. Do not treat a failed catalog as proof that every VPN feature is broken, and remember that VPN use may violate a streaming service’s terms.
Gaming usually benefits from the nearest server and a low-load protocol. A VPN can increase ping and jitter; turn it off if latency becomes unacceptable. For P2P, confirm that the plan and selected server allow it, enable the kill switch and leak protection, and remember that a VPN does not make malicious files safe or remove copyright obligations. Proton says P2P is available on paid plans, not its free plan.
When a VPN is not the right tool
Use encrypted DNS for a narrower DNS-privacy need, a password manager and multifactor authentication for account security, antivirus and updates for endpoint protection, and Tor when your threat model requires stronger anonymity than a single commercial intermediary can provide. A VPN is most useful when you need encrypted transport on untrusted networks, reduced ISP visibility, a different apparent IP or convenient protection across your own devices.

Paying is worthwhile when you need more locations, streaming, P2P, multiple connections or consistent support. A reputable free tier can be enough for occasional public-Wi-Fi protection.

Will a VPN slow my internet?
Usually somewhat. Distance, server load, protocol, Wi-Fi, hardware and ISP capacity determine the actual effect; nearby servers generally perform best.
Does a VPN guarantee Netflix access?
No. Streaming services detect and block VPN IP ranges, so access varies by service, country, server and date.
Should I leave my VPN on all the time?
You can for general privacy, but banking, local-device discovery and some fraud systems may work better with that app or network excluded.
Does a VPN protect every device in my home?
