The best voicemail app depends on who controls your mailbox. If your carrier supports Android visual voicemail, use the voicemail tab in the built-in Phone app. Choose Google Voice when you want a separate U.S. number with searchable transcripts, or YouMail when spam blocking, custom greetings and call handling matter more. Carrier voicemail apps can add features, but installing one may turn off visual voicemail in the Phone app.
What “voicemail app” means on Android
These options use different systems, so they are not interchangeable inbox skins:
- Native visual voicemail: The voicemail tab in the Android Phone app connects to a compatible carrier mailbox. Android has supported an integrated visual-voicemail framework since Android 6.0, with additional transcript and quota capabilities added in Android 7.0, but the carrier, plan, device and region still have to support it. - Carrier voicemail app: A carrier-provided app accesses the carrier’s own mailbox and may add greetings, transcription or enhanced notifications.
- Independent voicemail service: YouMail receives calls through conditional call forwarding and stores recordings and transcripts on its platform. YouMail explains how forwarding works
- Cloud phone-number service: Google Voice supplies a separate number for calls, texts and voicemail, with optional forwarding from a mobile line. Google Voice setup

Android’s built-in visual voicemail
Android includes the client, not a universal carrier mailbox. Google’s supported-carrier list includes AT&T, Cellcom, Coriolis, Google Fi, O2, Orange and T-Mobile for the feature described on its support page, but availability varies by country, plan, device and carrier implementation. Turn it on
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options (three dots).
- Tap Settings, then Voicemail.
- Turn on Visual voicemail. If your carrier and device expose it, enable transcription as well.
- Call the number from another phone, leave a message and verify the inbox and notification.
Turning visual voicemail off removes recordings from that Phone-app inbox, although the carrier may retain copies. Installing a carrier voicemail app can also switch off the Phone app’s visual voicemail, so select one primary client rather than running competing apps.

Google Voice: best for a separate number
Google Voice is a cloud phone service, not simply a replacement tab for the voicemail attached to your SIM. The personal Basic plan is listed at $0 and includes a number, domestic calling and texting, voicemail transcription, spam protection, blocking and Android, iPhone and web access. Personal local-number availability is listed as U.S.-only, and Google Voice does not offer 1-800 numbers. Plan details · Android setup
Google lists Voice Starter at $10 per month and Standard at $20 per month for standalone personal-Gmail plans. Features differ by plan; do not treat the free account as a complete substitute for carrier mobile service or business emergency calling. Set up a Voice number
- Install Google Voice and sign in.
- Tap Continue, then Search.
- Choose a number by city or area code and follow verification prompts.
- Leave a test voicemail and confirm the transcript in the Voice inbox.
- For email copies, open Menu → Settings → Voicemail → Get voicemail via email. Transcript-forwarding instructions
To listen by phone, use Google Voice → Menu → Settings → Voicemail → Call to listen and set a PIN. Google’s access instructions
Forward your mobile line
Conditional forwarding sends unanswered, busy or unreachable calls to Voice, but activation codes depend on the carrier and some plans do not support it. Use the mobile phone’s keypad, enter the carrier’s documented commands, and test each condition separately. Google gives these deactivation examples: AT&T Wireless ##61# (unanswered), ##62# (unreachable) and ##67# (busy); Verizon Wireless *73. They are not universal setup codes. YouMail: best for spam controls and custom handling
YouMail combines a visual inbox, voice-to-text, spam and robocall filtering, custom greetings, app and website access, and optional email or text alerts. Paid features can add second numbers, call screening, auto attendants, auto replies and professional greetings. YouMail features
Install the app, create an account, select a plan and follow its carrier-specific activation flow. Enable conditional call forwarding when prompted, then test no-answer, busy and unreachable calls. Without forwarding, calls continue to the carrier mailbox and YouMail cannot provide its full visual-voicemail and blocking experience. YouMail setup explanation

There is no Visual voicemail toggle
- Confirm you are using the expected Phone app; Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus and carrier dialers can expose different menus.
- Check that the SIM or eSIM is active and voicemail is provisioned on the exact plan.
- Verify support with the exact carrier or MVNO, phone model and region; an underlying network’s support page does not guarantee MVNO support.
- Look for a carrier voicemail app that has taken control.
- Enable mobile data if your carrier requires it, restart after a SIM, eSIM or plan change, and ask the carrier to reprovision voicemail.
Reinstalling the Phone app cannot fix a carrier-side incompatibility. Google’s compatibility guidance

Messages land in the wrong inbox
Disable unused forwarding rules and identify the mailbox owner. Incorrect rules can loop calls among the carrier, Google Voice and YouMail. Test no-answer, busy and unreachable conditions independently, then restore carrier voicemail using carrier-specific controls if you stop forwarding.
Transcripts or notifications are missing
- Play the audio: transcripts can misread names, numbers, accents, noise and technical terms.
- Check notification permission, background-data restrictions and the service’s transcription quota.
- Confirm the call actually reached the intended service rather than the carrier mailbox.
Forwarding stopped after a change
Carrier switches, number ports, SIM replacements and network resets can erase forwarding rules or native provisioning. Recheck every rule, then contact the carrier if a condition cannot be activated.
Privacy, reliability and emergency calling
Native carrier voicemail keeps you within the carrier’s ordinary mailbox. Google Voice and YouMail store recordings and transcripts in cloud accounts; review retention, deletion and account-access policies before sending personal or business messages to them. Treat every transcript as a triage aid and listen to the recording before acting on an ambiguous instruction.
A voicemail service does not automatically replace mobile connectivity or emergency calling. Google’s paid standalone plans list emergency-call support, while the free personal service has a different feature set. Keep the carrier line available for functions your chosen cloud number does not provide. Google Voice plan capabilities

Recommendation by situation
- Working native support: stay with the Phone app; it is the simplest and usually avoids another subscription.
- Need a separate number and searchable voicemail: start with free Google Voice in the U.S.
- Need aggressive spam management, greetings or screening: evaluate YouMail, provided your carrier permits conditional forwarding.
- Need both numbers: keep the carrier mailbox for the primary line and use Voice or YouMail for the second line, accepting that you will manage two inboxes.
- Need staff routing and administration: compare paid Google Voice or a business phone platform rather than forcing a personal voicemail app to behave like a contact center.
