Their plans package calling and collaboration differently, so there is no universal best choice without knowing your country, team size and calling needs.
What counts as a free business phone number app?
A free ongoing plan and a free trial are different. Google Voice Basic is listed at $0 for personal use in the US. Grasshopper advertises a seven-day free trial, not a permanent free business plan. The other services covered here describe paid business offerings.
A virtual number lets you handle calls through supported devices and apps rather than requiring a traditional landline handset. Whether a service is suitable for a business depends on more than having an app: check who can use the number, whether calls can be routed or shared, what texting is included, and which countries and number types are available.

Which free option fits a solo operator?
Google Voice Basic: the clearest no-cost starting point
Google lists Basic at $0 per month for personal use in the US. It includes one phone number across devices and unlimited domestic calling and texting, and requires an existing mobile number. Those terms make it a practical place to start if you need a separate number for a one-person operation and accept the personal-use positioning.
Do not assume that the free line includes the management features of a business phone system. Google lists call transfers, automated call handling, ring groups, desk phone and analog telephone adapter (ATA) support among features that depend on paid plans. Its page says Workspace is required to enable Voice for multiple users in an organization. Confirm the exact plan and Workspace requirements against Google’s current Voice plan information.

Its pricing page advertises a seven-day free trial and says no credit card is required. When a paid app makes more sense
Choose for team routing and administration
If several people need to answer one business number, prioritize shared access, ring groups, transfers, automated answering and administrator controls. Google’s paid options include plan-dependent business calling features, while organizational use with multiple users requires Workspace. Compare the exact add-ons and total cost rather than treating the free personal plan as a team system.

Choose for calling bundles and integrations
Zoom Phone lists US and Canada plans with an included domestic number, domestic calling that is unlimited or metered depending on plan, domestic SMS/MMS, call recording and integrations. Monthly and annual displayed amounts differ, and bundle contents vary. Verify the billing term, plan edition, geography and calling allowance on Zoom’s plan page.
RingCentral presents a broader communications platform spanning voice, messaging, video, fax, administration, integrations and APIs. It may suit teams seeking those capabilities in one service, but availability at a particular tier should be checked on RingCentral’s plan page.

Consider Ooma for app-based business calling
Ooma describes virtual numbers used with its mobile app and calling through mobile and desktop paths. Check current plans, included number types, features and hardware compatibility at Ooma’s business page; the available information does not establish an independent performance ranking.

No. If you plan to make and receive calls using a mobile or desktop app, a separate handset is not inherently required. Google says, “Your Voice line works on mobile devices, laptops, and supported desk phones so you can stay connected at work, home, or on-the-go.” The supported desk phone and ATA options depend on the paid plan; verify compatibility with both the provider and the plan before buying hardware.
