Lexar lists USB-A flash-drive and SD-card support, 32GB internal storage, and expansion through USB or SD up to 1TB. Those are published specifications, not a claim of comparative hands-on testing. Lexar’s product page lists a $149.99 MSRP.

For family sharing, pexar uses Frameo: invited contributors can send photos and videos from iOS or Android. Wi-Fi is needed for phone uploads, but photos already on the frame can be viewed offline. The product supports JPG/JPEG, PNG, WEBP and HEIC photos, along with MP4 and 3GP video. Format support does not guarantee flawless playback of every file: unusually large images, unusual color profiles, variable-frame-rate video or phone-specific motion-photo formats may behave differently from ordinary JPEGs.
Note the two ports’ different jobs: USB-A is for flash drives; USB-C is for data-cable transfers from a computer. The USB-C port is not a substitute for plugging a standard USB-A thumb drive into the frame. The unit also requires wall power and Wi-Fi for phone-based sending; it is not a battery-powered or completely cloud-free sharing solution.
Best for offline libraries and remote management: Pix-Star
Pix-Star makes the clearest case for a household that wants direct USB/SD use and the ability to help manage a frame remotely. Its manufacturer says USB and SD media work without Wi-Fi, supports FAT32, exFAT and NTFS, and accepts media up to 2TB. Photos stored on the frame continue displaying when Wi-Fi is disconnected. That makes it a stronger documented fit than an app-only frame for a large archive or a recipient who should not have to manage uploads.
Contributors can send photos by email or app, or use Pix-Star’s web dashboard. The company describes remote controls for albums, brightness, sleep schedules and senders, and says one account can manage up to 25 frames. Pix-Star advertises no subscription and free cloud storage; verify current terms when buying because service policies can change. The LUX 10-inch was listed on the official shop at $139.99 sale price versus $159.99 regular, the 15-inch at $219.99, and the 17-inch LUX at $249.99 sale versus $299 regular. Availability differed by model, so confirm the listing before ordering.

The trade-offs are that screen and storage specifications vary by model, larger frames cost more, and the styling and interface may feel less contemporary than app-first alternatives. Pix-Star is particularly compelling for a parent or grandparent’s frame that another family member will administer from afar.
Best lower-cost pexar: 10.1-inch
The pexar 10.1-inch keeps the essentials: USB-A flash-drive and SD-card support, 32GB internal storage, Frameo sharing, anti-glare treatment and automatic orientation. It uses a 1280×800, 16:10 display and supports expansion up to 256GB. Lexar lists a $139.99 MSRP. If the 11-inch model is available near its $149.99 listed MSRP, the small price gap makes its higher-resolution screen worth considering. If the 10.1-inch is substantially cheaper at the retailer, it remains a sensible option for a smaller budget or a less demanding viewing distance. Check live prices rather than assuming MSRP reflects the actual deal.
Good frames that are not ideal if USB is a requirement
- Skylight Frame: Its appeal is straightforward sharing by app or email, a useful arrangement for families updating a nontechnical recipient’s frame. The product page lists JPEG, BMP, PNG and GIF support and says basic sending does not require an account or subscription. However, comparison coverage describes the reviewed model as having no physical USB or SD input. Treat it as an alternative only if remote sharing matters more than thumb-drive loading, and confirm the exact model’s inputs.
- Aura: Aura centers its products on app sharing and unlimited photo storage. Its shop listed Carver, Carver Mat, Aspen and Walden at $149, $179, $229 and $299 respectively. These are options for buyers prioritizing décor and app experience, not USB-first use. Port availability is model-specific: for example, the Aura Ink’s USB-C port is for charging, not importing photos, as TechRadar’s review notes.
- Nixplay: App, web and email workflows suit cloud sharing and playlists. Nixplay’s comparison page lists a $159.99 price for a compared 10.1-inch frame and $39 per year for Nixplay Plus, and says the full software feature set shown requires Plus. The lineup and inputs can vary, so verify USB support for the specific model and include any subscription you need in the total cost.
What “USB support” should mean before you buy
USB is not one feature. Product descriptions may use the term for several different functions:

- Direct playback: The frame reads and displays files from an inserted drive. You may need to leave the drive connected.
- Import to internal storage: The frame copies images from USB; afterward, you can remove the drive. This can be more convenient for a permanent slideshow.
- Computer transfer: A USB-C data connection may let you copy files from a computer, but it does not necessarily accept a thumb drive.
- Charging only: The port supplies power and cannot transfer photos.
Look specifically for “USB-A flash drive” or explicit USB flash-drive playback/import instructions. Then check the file system, maximum supported capacity, file formats and whether Wi-Fi is needed. Pix-Star documents FAT32, exFAT and NTFS support; do not assume those formats work on every other frame. Lexar specifies USB flash-drive support for pexar, but that alone does not establish support for every drive format or capacity.

How much storage do you need?
For many households, 32GB is enough for a substantial selection of family pictures. Lexar estimates that 32GB can hold up to 40,000 photos at an average compressed size of 600KB each. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a promise: modern full-resolution phone photos can be much larger, so the real count depends on file size. Choose expansion capacity based on the archive you actually intend to show, not a headline photo count.
The pexar 10.1-inch supports USB/SD expansion up to 256GB; the 11-inch supports up to 1TB; Pix-Star says its USB/SD media support extends to 2TB. For years of full-resolution images, a removable drive offers more room than internal storage—but keep a separate backup. A frame or flash drive should never be the only copy of a family archive.
Display, orientation and photo fit
Resolution matters, but it is only one part of the viewing experience. Consider glare, brightness, viewing angle, screen size, aspect ratio and where the frame will sit. The pexar 11-inch publishes the strongest display specification in this USB-focused shortlist, while Pix-Star’s screen details differ by model. A higher-resolution display does not automatically make a frame better for every family: easy remote sharing may matter more than pixel density.
Phone photos are often portrait-oriented. Automatic rotation helps the image match the frame’s position, but it cannot eliminate aspect-ratio differences. A photo can still appear with borders, be cropped, or be resized depending on the frame’s fit/fill setting. Test both portrait and landscape images before giving a frame as a gift, especially if important faces are near the edges.

Setup: loading photos from a USB drive
- Keep a backup. Copy photos onto the drive; do not move the only originals from your computer or archive.
- Use compatible files. Ordinary JPEGs are a safe starting point. Check the frame’s supported formats before transferring HEIC, WebP or video files.
- Organize and name files. Use folders by year, person or event. If sequence matters, try numbered names such as
001-family.jpg; frames may sort by filename, date or folder order. - Check drive requirements. Confirm the exact model’s file-system and capacity support. Do not reformat the only copy of your archive.
- Eject the drive safely from the computer, then plug it into the frame’s documented flash-drive port.
- Choose the external-media or import option shown by that model. The interface may offer playback from the drive or copying into internal storage; do not assume the menu wording is identical across brands.
- Test sample photos. Check a few portrait and landscape images, ordering, cropping and slideshow behavior.
- Set brightness and sleep time for the room, and keep the drive backed up after setup.
For pexar, use USB-A for a flash drive; USB-C is the computer-transfer connection. For Pix-Star, the manufacturer documents USB/SD transfer without internet and FAT32, exFAT and NTFS media support. Other models may have different limits.

- Connect the frame to power and, where required, a compatible Wi-Fi network. Pexar specifies 2.4GHz Wi-Fi for its online features.
- Install the frame’s app or create the required account, then pair the frame using its on-screen code or invitation process.
- Invite the family members who should contribute and send a small test image.
- Confirm how the frame stores the received photo and whether a feature requires a paid plan.
- Temporarily disconnect Wi-Fi to check which photos remain viewable offline.
- Set a sleep schedule and brightness, and show the recipient how to manage or remove unwanted senders.
Sharing methods differ: pexar uses Frameo; Pix-Star offers email, app and web-dashboard options; Skylight emphasizes app and email; Aura is app-centered. Nixplay offers app, web and email workflows, but the feature set can depend on Nixplay Plus. Basic sending being free does not mean every cloud, backup or playlist feature is included.
Choose by household
- For the best published display specification with USB: pexar 11-inch.
- For an extensive offline archive plus remote help: Pix-Star, with model size chosen for the room and budget.
- For the pexar workflow at a lower price: pexar 10.1-inch, particularly if its actual selling price is well below the 11-inch.
- For a grandparent whose family will send photos remotely: Pix-Star if USB and remote administration matter; Skylight if USB is optional and simple app/email sending is the priority.
- For premium décor and app-centered sharing: Aura, provided USB is not a requirement.
- For cloud playlists and software features: Nixplay, after checking the exact model’s inputs and adding any subscription to the budget.
Troubleshooting a USB photo frame
The frame does not recognize the drive
Check that you are using the data-capable flash-drive port, that the drive is within the model’s capacity limit, and that its file system is supported. The frame may need a restart or may not recognize a drive with unsupported files. Try a smaller drive with a few JPEGs, then test the manufacturer-documented format. Back up before reformatting; never erase your only archive as a troubleshooting step. Do not assume exFAT or NTFS compatibility unless the frame’s documentation confirms it.
Photos are cropped or have borders
This is usually an aspect-ratio mismatch. Try the frame’s fit/fill setting, crop important pictures before transfer, and test portraits as well as landscapes. Rotation changes orientation, not the image’s proportions.

Photos appear in the wrong order
Frames may sort by filename, file date, folder or a random setting. Number filenames in the desired order and check slideshow settings; test the sequence on the frame before loading a large library.
Remote sharing fails but USB works
USB playback and internet sharing are separate features. Check Wi-Fi, app pairing, sender permissions and available storage. Also check whether the feature requires a subscription. A frame may continue showing locally stored pictures even when a sharing service is unavailable.
