For most people who want a gradual light-based wake-up, the Hatch Restore 3 is the best all-around choice; for a simpler clock without a connected sleep-content ecosystem, choose the Lumie Bodyclock Glow 150. A sunrise alarm can make waking feel less abrupt and provide a timed morning light cue, but it is not a guaranteed way to reset your circadian rhythm, improve sleep, or treat a health condition. The device works best as one part of a consistent routine that also gives you enough time to sleep.

Prices and offers below are U.S. manufacturer-page signals checked for this comparison; they can change. The recommendations are based on documented features and intended use, not a claim of hands-on testing.

Lumie Bodyclock Luxe 700FM Premium audio options $259 15–90-minute sunrise and sunset, 25-plus sounds, FM radio and Bluetooth speakers.

Pick the least expensive clock that has the controls and backup alarm you need. If you mainly want a gradual light ramp, paying more for streaming-style content, radio or extra sounds may not improve the part that matters to you.

What a circadian-friendly alarm can—and cannot—do

A sunrise alarm gradually brightens before the set wake time instead of relying only on a sudden sound. The aim is a gentler transition and a timed morning light cue. Light is an important environmental signal for the circadian system, and appropriately timed exposure can influence sleep-wake timing. But the light from a bedside clock is not necessarily equivalent to outdoor daylight or a clinical bright-light therapy lamp. Its effect depends on brightness at your eyes, distance, angle, room conditions, timing and your sensitivity to light. Sleep Foundation’s overview of light therapy explains the broader role of light; its sunrise-alarm guide notes that evidence is limited for claims that consumer clocks improve sleep or overall health.

Odokee Sunrise Alarm Clock White Noise Machine: Natural Wake Up Light
  • Gentle Wake Up with Sunrise Alarm Clock: The sunrise simulation gradually brightens over a customizable 5-60 minutes before your set alarm time, aligning with your circadian rhythm for a peaceful, stress-free start to your day.
  • Soothing Sound Machine for Better Sleep: Choose from 25 calming sounds, including white/pink/brown/blue noise and natural sounds like waves and rain. Set the sleep timer for a restful slumber.
  • Immersive Bluetooth Audio: Stream music, podcasts, or audiobooks via Bluetooth. The 5W stereo speaker delivers clear sound quality, creating an immersive listening experience.
  • 0-100% Dimmable Digital Clock & Night Light: Adjust the clock’s display to the perfect brightness with a full-range dimmer. The soft night light features 12 color options including a sunset light, perfect for reading or relaxing before bed.
  • Personalize Your Wake-Up Experience: Customize your morning with 7 alarm sounds and adjustable volume. Choose from 3 wake-up modes: gentle light + sound, just the alarm, or sunrise light without sound for a natural wake-up experience.

Keep these outcomes separate: finding the alarm more pleasant, feeling more alert shortly after waking, shifting circadian timing, sleeping longer or better, and treating a diagnosed disorder are not the same thing. A clock may help with the first or provide a useful routine cue without delivering the others. It cannot make an undersized sleep opportunity sufficient: if the sunrise starts earlier but bedtime stays the same, it may simply cut sleep short.

That is why “naturally regulate your body’s internal systems” and “wake up energized every morning” are too strong as promises. A more defensible description is that a sunrise alarm may make waking less abrupt and support a regular morning routine; individual results vary.

Sunrise alarm versus bright-light therapy

A sunrise alarm is designed to brighten gradually while you are in bed. A bright-light therapy lamp is used while awake, at a position and duration set by its instructions or a clinician, and is intended to provide substantially brighter exposure. Do not assume a bedside clock delivers the intensity or protocol used for a clinical light intervention. If you suspect seasonal affective disorder, have severe morning sleepiness, bipolar disorder, an eye condition, take medication that increases light sensitivity, or have a diagnosed circadian rhythm disorder, ask a clinician before treating a consumer clock as therapy. Nighttime light matters too: a clock’s sunset mode can be a wind-down cue, but it does not substitute for managing bright light in the rest of the room.

How to choose a sunrise alarm

  • Sunrise duration: A longer ramp may feel gentler; a shorter one may suit someone who needs a more concentrated cue. The Glow 150 offers 20, 30 or 45 minutes; the Rise 100 has a 30-minute sunrise; the Shine 300 and Luxe 700FM offer 15–90 minutes; the Philips HF3650/60 uses a 30-minute simulation.
  • Brightness adjustment: A dim setting may not wake one sleeper, while a bright one may bother another. Look for a way to adjust intensity rather than assuming one setting suits everyone.
  • Light placement and progression: The brightness reaching your eyes is not the same as a lamp’s maximum output. Bed orientation, distance, curtains, an eye mask and sleeping position all matter. Philips describes its HF3650/60 sunrise as moving from red through orange to bright yellow. Treat color sequences as product features, not proof that one is clinically superior.
  • Reliable backup: Keep sound, vibration or a second alarm available if you are a heavy sleeper, must wake at a precise time, sleep facing away from the clock, or block light with blackout curtains or an eye mask. Light alone may not be dependable for everyone.
  • Controls and connectivity: Decide whether you want physical controls or app-based schedules. Hatch Restore 3 requires Wi-Fi for setup, according to Sleep Foundation; preset light modes can be operated without its app. Before buying any connected clock, check what happens to alarms and saved schedules without internet or after a power interruption rather than assuming the product category guarantees it.
  • Subscription and content: Separate basic alarm and light functions from optional sleep stories, meditation or other premium audio. Hatch advertises 30 days of Hatch+ with Restore 3; confirm the current terms and any continuing cost directly with the company. Do not assume premium content is required for ordinary sunrise operation.
  • Trial and warranty: The Hatch page lists a 30-night bedside trial and one-year product warranty. Lumie lists a 45-day trial and three-year warranty for Glow 150. Confirm current conditions before ordering. Philips’ suggested retail price is not necessarily a current checkout price, and warranty terms should be checked on the relevant current page.

Which clock fits which sleeper?

Hatch Restore 3: best all-around for an integrated routine

Hatch Restore 3 is the strongest fit if you want a sunrise alarm alongside bedtime routines, soundscapes and guided audio in one system. The U.S. page lists it at $169.99 and advertises 30 days of Hatch+ content, a 30-night trial and a one-year warranty. Its broader sleep-content experience is the point; it is not the simplest pick for someone who wants a basic clock with physical controls. Setup involves the app and Wi-Fi, and some content is associated with Hatch+. Check which features matter to you before choosing it over a dedicated light.

Lumie Bodyclock Glow 150: best simpler option

The Glow 150 is a practical choice for someone who wants a dedicated wake-up light and does not need a connected sleep platform. At a listed $139, it offers 20-, 30- or 45-minute sunrise and sunset durations, adjustable sunrise intensity, 10 wake/sleep sounds, tap snooze and a night-light function. Lumie lists a 45-day trial and three-year warranty. It has fewer smart and audio options than Hatch or higher-end Lumie models. The Glow 150 manual describes controls for alarm time, sunrise intensity and duration, and wake sound; it gives 30 minutes as the default sunrise.

Philips SmartSleep HF3650/60: best if the light simulation is the priority

The Philips SmartSleep HF3650/60 pairs a 30-minute sunrise simulation that Philips says progresses from red to orange to bright yellow with sunset simulation, multiple sounds and RelaxBreathe. Philips lists a suggested retail price of $199.99. It suits buyers who want a feature-rich bedside light and value those specific extras; it costs more than the Glow 150, and a suggested retail price does not establish current stock or checkout pricing.

Lumie Bodyclock Rise 100: best lower-cost dedicated model

At a listed $109 on Lumie’s comparison page, the Rise 100 offers a 30-minute sunrise and sunset, adjustable sunrise intensity, night-light function and optional beep. It is the straightforward lower-cost choice if you do not need many sounds, radio, Bluetooth or app personalization. Its simpler feature set may not suit a heavy sleeper who wants more wake-up options.

Lumie Shine 300 or Luxe 700FM: choose only if you will use the extras

The Shine 300 is listed at $169 and adds a 15–90-minute sunrise and sunset, 15 sounds, FM radio and daily or weekly alarms. The Luxe 700FM is listed at $259 and adds 25-plus sounds and Bluetooth speakers alongside a 15–90-minute ramp and FM radio. These traditional-clock options make sense if their broader audio controls matter to you; they are poor value if the only requirement is a gradual light cue. Lumie’s listings are manufacturer specifications and prices, not independent evidence of superior circadian effects.

Special situations

  • Heavy sleepers or exact wake deadlines: Use the light as a gradual cue, not your only safeguard. Test the audible alarm and keep a second alarm, vibration alert or other reliable backup until you know the setup works.
  • Hearing loss: A light alarm may add an accessible visual cue, but it should be paired with vibration or another alert if waking on time is essential. Sleep Foundation notes sunrise alarms may be useful for people with hearing loss.
  • Children: A sunrise-style clock can serve as a visual “time to get up” cue. For child-focused products, check brightness and placement, cord safety, stability, parental controls, backup power, Wi-Fi needs and whether paid content is optional. Sleep Foundation identifies Hatch Rest+ as a children’s option, with scheduled color changes, white noise and an eight-hour backup battery; verify the current model’s specifications before purchase.
  • Shared bedroom: Consider whether the light will disturb a partner, whether alarms can be set for different days, whether sound can be disabled, and whether the display can be dimmed fully.
  • Shift work or irregular schedules: A clock cannot make a daytime sleep schedule or rotating shifts simple. Choose one that lets you set the right alarm pattern, and seek professional advice if sleepiness or timing problems persist.

Set it up without sacrificing sleep

  1. First choose a realistic, consistent wake time and allow enough time in bed. Do not move the alarm earlier unless bedtime also leaves room for adequate sleep.
  2. Place the clock on the bedside table near your head, angled so the light can reach your face and upper body without being uncomfortable. Follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions.
  3. Set the wake time and begin with a 20–30-minute ramp and moderate brightness if the device allows it.
  4. Enable a gentle sound backup, particularly on workdays, while you learn whether the light alone wakes you reliably.
  5. Use the same setup for several mornings. If waking feels abrupt, lengthen the ramp; if you sleep through it, try a brighter setting or adjust placement within the manufacturer’s guidance. If it wakes you too early or feels unpleasant, lower intensity or shorten the ramp.
  6. Get outdoor morning light after rising when practical. Keep evening lighting comfortable and low; a sunset feature can remind you to wind down, but it cannot control every source of light in the bedroom.

If it fails, check that the alarm is enabled for the correct days, the displayed time and time zone are right, the ramp begins when expected, brightness is not set too low, and the sound alarm works separately. For connected models, check power, Wi-Fi and app status. Keep a second alarm until reliability is established, and use the advertised trial period if the device is not a good fit.

When a sunrise clock is not enough

Do not rely on a consumer wake-up light as treatment for severe insomnia, persistent daytime sleepiness, seasonal affective disorder, delayed or advanced sleep-wake phase disorder, non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder or shift-work disorder. A clinician can help identify whether timing, insufficient sleep, medication, another condition or a specific light-therapy plan is involved. People with bipolar disorder, eye conditions or medicines that increase light sensitivity should seek medical guidance before unusually bright or prolonged light exposure. A sunrise alarm is a consumer wake-up aid, not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment.

Bottom line

Choose Hatch Restore 3 if you want a connected, content-rich bedtime and morning system; choose Lumie Glow 150 if you want a simpler dedicated sunrise clock with useful duration choices and clear trial and warranty terms. The Lumie Rise 100 is the lower-cost pick for basic needs, while Philips and higher-end Lumie models are worth considering only if their particular light or audio features justify the extra cost. Whatever you buy, preserve enough sleep, keep a dependable backup alarm, and treat the light as a routine cue—not a guaranteed circadian reset.
