The best speakers for Xbox Series X depend on what your console is connected to. For most TV setups, choose a soundbar that connects to the TV through HDMI ARC/eARC or optical. At a gaming desk, powered speakers connected to your monitor’s 3.5mm output are often simpler and less expensive. The key is the whole audio path: Xbox → TV, monitor, or HDMI audio device → speakers. Xbox Series X sends audio over HDMI; it has no conventional optical audio port, and you should not assume that USB PC speakers will work when plugged directly into the console.

These are setup recommendations, not claims that one speaker will suit every room. A soundbar can be a good Xbox solution without being connected directly to the console; what matters is whether the TV, monitor, receiver, or extractor can deliver the desired audio to it.
How Xbox Series X audio reaches speakers
The console has one HDMI 2.1 port and outputs audio along with video over HDMI. Microsoft lists Dolby TrueHD with Atmos support, but that capability does not guarantee Atmos from every game, app, TV, or speaker. The entire chain must support and pass the selected format. Connect the Xbox to a regular HDMI input on the TV, then connect the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC to the soundbar or receiver:

Xbox → TV HDMI input → TV HDMI ARC/eARC → soundbar or receiver
This keeps the console connected directly to the TV, which is usually the least risky arrangement for 4K/120Hz, VRR, and other gaming features. ARC/eARC availability and format support vary by TV. eARC generally offers more bandwidth for high-quality formats; ordinary ARC may limit the audio formats the TV can return. Check the TV manual for its supported passthrough formats and use its ARC/eARC port, not just any HDMI port.
In the TV’s sound settings, choose the external audio system or HDMI ARC/eARC output. If the TV offers passthrough or bitstream options, use the one recommended for your soundbar and format. Labels differ by manufacturer.
Soundbar-first HDMI connection: only with verified passthrough
A soundbar with an HDMI input can sit between the console and TV:
Xbox → soundbar HDMI input → soundbar HDMI output → TV
This can be useful if the TV lacks enough suitable HDMI inputs, but do not infer gaming compatibility from an Atmos logo or an HDMI input alone. Confirm that the exact soundbar port supports the features you use: 4K at 120Hz, VRR, ALLM, HDR10, and Dolby Vision if relevant. Also check whether those features work simultaneously and on every input. If the soundbar limits the picture to 4K/60Hz or disables VRR, connect the Xbox directly to the TV and return audio over ARC/eARC.

TV optical output: a practical fallback
With an older TV or soundbar, use:
Xbox → TV HDMI input → TV optical output → soundbar or powered speakers

Optical avoids Bluetooth latency and can work well for stereo or supported compressed surround. Its bandwidth is below eARC, so it is not a route for the full range of modern lossless Atmos formats. The TV may output only stereo or compressed Dolby Digital depending on its settings and capabilities.
Monitor with a headphone or line output
For a desk, connect the Xbox to the monitor over HDMI and connect powered speakers to the monitor’s 3.5mm audio output:
Xbox → monitor HDMI → monitor 3.5mm output → powered speakers
First check that the monitor actually passes HDMI audio to that output. Some monitors have no audio out; others label the port for headphones or tie its level to the monitor’s volume setting. Start with stereo audio on the Xbox and raise the monitor’s output level. Also confirm that the monitor’s HDMI input supports your desired resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and VRR.

Xbox → HDMI audio extractor → display for video and speakers for audio
Choose one only after checking its exact specifications for the video you need: 4K, 120Hz, HDR10 or Dolby Vision, VRR, ALLM, and HDCP compatibility. Confirm that it provides the output your speakers accept—such as optical, RCA, or 3.5mm. A generic “4K” label does not establish 4K/120Hz or VRR support. An extractor that compromises the picture is a poor trade for a more convenient audio jack.
Which type of speakers should you buy?
Soundbar: best match for most TV-based Xbox setups
A soundbar is a natural choice for a TV because it is compact and typically accepts ARC/eARC or optical audio from the display. It suits small and medium rooms and can improve dialogue and overall impact over built-in TV speakers. A separate subwoofer can add bass, but check whether it is included or sold separately.
Be realistic about surround claims. A stereo bar or virtual-surround processing does not provide the same physical rear-channel separation as speakers positioned behind you. Up-firing Atmos drivers depend on ceiling shape and height, and open-plan rooms can make reflected effects less convincing. Keep the bar unobstructed beneath the TV; if the screen blocks its drivers, placement can undermine the result.
Compact premium pick: Sonos Beam
The Sonos Beam is a reasonable compact TV soundbar choice for a small or medium room, particularly if you already use Sonos or want app-based multiroom audio. Sonos lists HDMI ARC support and optical-adapter compatibility, along with Dolby Atmos and a range of audio formats. Whether Atmos is delivered depends on the TV connection and source signal, not just the bar’s specification. Check the Beam’s current connection and format details against your TV.
It is less suitable if you need several HDMI inputs, want the deepest bass without adding a subwoofer, or use a gaming monitor without ARC/eARC or audio output. Do not buy it expecting HDMI 2.1 passthrough for the Xbox; plan to connect the console to the TV and return audio to the bar.

Powered 2.1 desktop speakers: good value near a monitor
A 2.1 system has two speakers and a separate subwoofer. It can be a good desk choice if the monitor has a headphone or line output. Creative Pebble X Plus is one example: Creative lists USB audio, Bluetooth 5.3, a 3.5mm AUX input, and manufacturer-rated output of 30W RMS and 60W peak. For an Xbox desk setup, the analog AUX input fed by the monitor is the relevant route; the USB specifications do not establish that the Xbox will recognize the speakers as an audio device. Place the subwoofer where it does not muddy the desk or block legroom. Bluetooth is useful for a phone, but it is not the default Xbox audio route and may add delay.
PC gaming soundbars: buy for the right source, not the label
Razer’s Leviathan V2 Pro and V2 X are PC-oriented desk products rather than default Xbox soundbar picks. Razer describes the V2 Pro around USB PC connectivity, Bluetooth, head-tracking and spatial-audio features; its V2 X uses USB Type-C for power and audio delivery. Neither description should be taken as proof of direct Xbox USB-audio support. They may be usable if a compatible monitor, TV, or other device supplies their audio, but check the exact inputs and output path first. See the V2 Pro specifications and V2 X specifications.
Do not confuse USB power with USB audio: a cable can power a speaker without carrying sound, or carry both, and a USB audio interface does not automatically mean a console will support it. Microsoft has an official guide to Xbox USB-port use, but do not assume a USB PC speaker is a supported audio device. Before buying, confirm a usable TV, monitor, optical, analog, or HDMI audio route.
AV receiver and separate speakers: best for expansion and real surround
If you want upgradeable stereo or discrete 5.1 or larger surround, an AV receiver with passive speakers is more flexible than a single bar. It also takes more space, setup, calibration, cable management, and budget. You can connect the Xbox through the receiver only if the exact receiver supports your video requirements, or connect Xbox to the TV and return audio over eARC. A full surround package is the better fit for a dedicated room where rear speakers can be placed properly; wireless rear speakers still need power and suitable positions.

Choose a headset instead if you play late at night, need isolation, rely on party chat, or want directional cues without room-dependent reflections. Speaker playback can also feed back into a separate microphone and cause echo. A headset is often the more practical multiplayer option, even if it cannot give you room-filling sound.

Set Xbox audio to match your equipment
Use the Xbox dashboard’s display and sound settings to choose an output the whole chain supports. Menu wording can change with dashboard updates. Start with the simplest format that works, then add surround only after confirming the TV, receiver, or soundbar supports it.

Atmos support on the console is only one part of the chain. The game or media must provide the relevant audio, the TV and connection must pass it, and the bar or receiver must decode or render it. If Atmos is selected but the bar reports stereo, check the TV’s ARC/eARC capability and passthrough settings, the soundbar input, and the content format.
Setup steps
TV and ARC/eARC soundbar
- Connect the Xbox to a TV HDMI input that supports the gaming features you use.
- Connect the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s ARC/eARC port.
- Set the TV audio output to the external HDMI audio system; enable passthrough or bitstream if appropriate for that TV and soundbar.
- Set Xbox audio to stereo first. Once sound works, select 5.1 uncompressed or Dolby Atmos only if the equipment supports it.
- Test with a game or media app that uses the selected format, and separately confirm 4K/120Hz and VRR remain enabled.
Monitor and powered speakers
- Connect Xbox to the monitor by HDMI.
- Connect the monitor’s 3.5mm or analog output to the powered speakers’ matching input.
- Set monitor volume to an audible level and choose stereo uncompressed on Xbox.
- If there is no sound, check the monitor’s audio-output settings and whether the port passes HDMI audio.
- If the monitor has no output, use a suitably specified extractor or an audio system with an appropriate HDMI/ARC route.
Soundbar-first passthrough
- Verify the soundbar’s exact HDMI input supports the console’s needed refresh rate, resolution, HDR, VRR, and ALLM.
- Connect Xbox to that soundbar input and connect its HDMI output to the TV’s compatible port.
- Enable HDMI-CEC only if you want volume control or automatic switching; CEC behavior differs by device.
- Test picture features individually. If a gaming feature disappears, connect Xbox directly to the TV and use ARC/eARC for sound.
Troubleshooting common problems
Picture works, but there is no sound
- Set Xbox to stereo uncompressed temporarily.
- Check TV or monitor volume and confirm its audio output is enabled.
- Confirm the soundbar is on the correct input and connected to the display’s ARC/eARC port if using that route.
- Check the TV’s external-speaker and passthrough settings; on a monitor, verify that HDMI audio reaches the headphone output.
- Power down and restart the HDMI chain: TV, soundbar or receiver, then Xbox.
- If needed, connect Xbox directly to another display to isolate the problem, and re-enable surround only after stereo works.

Dolby Atmos is unavailable or sounds like stereo
Check that the bar or receiver supports Atmos, the TV and ARC/eARC route pass the needed signal, and the TV is not forcing stereo PCM. Verify the content itself has an Atmos track. A product’s Atmos badge alone does not establish that the Xbox signal reaches it in Atmos.
4K/120Hz or VRR stops working
The soundbar or extractor may be limiting passthrough, the console may be connected to the wrong port, or the cable or device may not support the combination of features. Bypass the soundbar/extractor for video: connect Xbox directly to the TV’s suitable HDMI input and return audio through ARC/eARC. Confirm the exact port specifications rather than relying on “HDMI 2.1” as a blanket assurance.
Bluetooth audio has delay or does not work as expected
Bluetooth is best treated as a secondary way to play audio from a phone or other compatible device. It is not a guaranteed direct Xbox speaker connection, can add latency, and may not carry party chat through the setup you expect. For primary game audio, use HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, a display’s analog output, or a verified extractor.
Final buying checklist
- TV with ARC/eARC: Choose a TV-oriented soundbar or receiver and connect Xbox directly to the TV unless passthrough features on the audio device are explicitly verified.
- TV with optical but no ARC/eARC: Choose a soundbar or powered speakers with optical input, and expect format limitations compared with eARC.
- Monitor with 3.5mm output: Choose powered desktop speakers with a matching analog input; start with stereo uncompressed.
- Monitor with no audio output: Add a verified extractor or change to an audio system that accepts the needed HDMI or TV return-audio connection.
- Want physically separated surround: Budget for a receiver or full surround system, speakers, placement, and any required cables—not just the main bar.
- Need party chat or quiet play: A headset is generally a more direct fit than speakers.
Before buying, check the product’s inputs, included subwoofer or rear speakers, and your display’s outputs. The right Xbox Series X speaker is the one that fits both the room and the actual audio path without sacrificing the gaming picture features you use.
