For powered 2.1 speakers, try the Windows and ASUS driver checks first; if crackling persists, a small USB audio adapter is usually the simplest way to bypass the motherboard’s analog audio path. If you specifically need an internal PCIe card with analog 5.1 outputs, the Creative Sound BlasterX AE-5 Plus is the most defensible option among the cards reviewed here—but first verify current price, stock and driver support. The reported crackling does not prove the ALC4080 codec is inherently defective, and a new device is not guaranteed to cure faults caused elsewhere.
What the reported ALC4080 problem does—and does not—show
The complaint concerns an ASUS ROG Strix B650E-E Gaming WiFi desktop running Windows 11. The original poster described crackling or distortion, particularly during bass-heavy game audio, and said it continued with multiple speaker sets. A cross-post describes the issue on analog output and says a motherboard-provided patch improved digital output but not analog. These are the poster’s reports, not independently measured results. AnandTech discussion; cross-post discussion.
That pattern makes it reasonable to test a different audio path, but it does not establish a general defect in every Realtek ALC4080 implementation. ASUS identifies the codec in the board manual and provides a Windows 11 Realtek audio driver for this exact motherboard. The codec is only one part of the system: the board’s analog circuitry, grounding, driver, Windows processing, cabling and the speakers’ own amplifier can all affect what you hear. A PCIe sound card and a USB DAC both convert digital audio to analog. The useful distinction is that either can move conversion and output circuitry away from the motherboard’s analog implementation; a USB device also uses its own USB connection and driver path. Neither option bypasses every Windows, game or speaker-related cause of distortion.

Run these Windows 11 checks before buying anything
Retest the same game scene or audio clip after each change, at a repeatable volume. That makes it easier to identify which change matters rather than changing several variables at once. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance covers enhancements, format selection and audio services. Microsoft: Fix distorted or crackling audio.
- Install the exact ASUS audio package. Open the ROG Strix B650E-E Gaming WiFi support page, select the installed Windows edition, download its current Realtek audio driver, install it and restart. If crackling began after a driver update, test the previous ASUS package or roll back the driver rather than using a third-party driver updater.
- Turn off audio enhancements. Open Start → Settings → System → Sound, select the affected output device and set Audio enhancements to Off. Retest.
- Test a different default format. In Settings → System → Sound, select the output device and open its Advanced settings. Try common formats such as 24-bit/48 kHz and 16-bit/48 kHz. This is a compatibility check, not an attempt to maximize sample-rate numbers; higher rates do not automatically improve game audio.
- Temporarily disable exclusive control. Open Settings → System → Sound → More sound settings, select the device in the classic Sound control panel, choose Properties → Advanced, and clear Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device. Retest. Some specialist audio applications intentionally need exclusive access, so restore the setting if disabling it creates a problem. Microsoft: Exclusive-mode streams.
- Restart the audio services. Run
services.msc, restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then test again. - Isolate the physical connection. Compare the rear motherboard jack with the case’s front-panel jack; test headphones and speakers, swap the cable, and connect the speakers directly to the PC rather than through another device. Try another power outlet or power strip. Temporarily close virtual mixers, audio-routing utilities, overlays and communication software that may process or redirect audio.
- Compare optical output if available. If the board’s optical output and the receiving device are available, test them separately. Clean optical audio alongside distorted analog audio points more toward the analog output stage, grounding or analog connection. Optical still passes through parts of the driver and digital processing chain, so it is not a complete bypass test.
Read the test results before choosing hardware
- Only the front-panel jack crackles: the case’s front-panel cable, routing or connection is a stronger suspect than the rear output.
- Only one speaker set crackles: check that set’s cable, input and amplifier. Bass-heavy distortion that disappears when speaker gain or volume is reduced may be amplifier or speaker clipping, not a fault in the PC’s audio codec.
- All analog devices crackle, while optical is clean: a motherboard analog-stage, grounding or analog-cabling issue becomes more plausible. A separate audio device is a reasonable bypass test.
- Several outputs and devices crackle in the same game: investigate the game, Windows processing, driver behavior and system stability too. A replacement card may reproduce a problem that is not specific to the motherboard audio path.
Choose by speaker connection, not by the word “sound card”
| Setup | Most suitable direction | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Powered 2.1 speakers | Small USB stereo audio adapter or DAC | A standard stereo 3.5-mm output is sufficient; confirm the device is compatible with the PC’s available USB port. |
| Analog 5.1 speakers | Internal card with explicitly documented multichannel analog outputs, such as the AE-5 Plus | Check the number and arrangement of analog jacks and whether the card’s driver supports the desired output mode. |
| Digital receiver | Use the receiver’s supported optical, HDMI or USB connection | For 5.1 over optical in games, check for Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect encoding; ordinary optical S/PDIF does not generally carry uncompressed multichannel PCM. |
| Headphones as well as speakers | Choose for the headphones’ drive needs as well as speaker connections | Amplifier power matters more with demanding headphones; it should not dominate a purchase made for powered speakers. |
Internal PCIe cards: the current-style choice and the older alternatives
Creative Sound BlasterX AE-5 Plus
Among the discussed internal cards, this is the clearest choice when PCIe installation and analog 5.1 are firm requirements. Creative lists discrete 5.1 speaker output, Xamp headphone amplification, Dolby Digital Live and DTS Connect encoding. Those features also make it relevant if you need to send encoded multichannel audio to a compatible receiver over optical. Creative Sound BlasterX AE-5 Plus.

- 2) Easily convert the PC into a cinematic entertainment system by providing a 5.1 3D stereo surrounding sound
- 3) With low profile bracket for 2U case, your best choice of sound card for PC desktop
- 4) 16-bit multimedia digital signal editing decoder inside, Supports 32/64-bit audio processing, recording and playback
Creative’s US listing showed a $169.99 regular price and a $161.49 promotional price when checked for this article’s source information; prices and stock change, and those figures are not a promise of current or local pricing. The card is excessive if all you need is a stereo line output for ordinary powered 2.1 speakers. Check PCIe clearance around the graphics card and confirm the current Windows driver and software fit your needs before ordering.
Creative Sound Blaster AE-X
Creative’s product page lists an ESS ES9039Q2M DAC, a stated 130 dB dynamic range, support for 8–600-ohm headphones and up to 350 mW at 32 ohms on high gain. Those specifications target users with substantial headphone requirements more than someone who only wants to connect basic powered speakers. The source information did not establish a current price. Xonar AE, Xonar SE, Sound Blaster RX and Audigy FX V2
These older or previously suggested models may still appear in regional or local stock, but current official pricing, stock and driver support were not established here. Treat them as availability-dependent options, and check the manufacturer’s current support information before purchase rather than assuming an old listing means reliable Windows 11 support. The forum discussion identifies the Xonar SE as Realtek-based, but that chip attribution is not independently confirmed here; if accurate, it makes the SE a questionable way to get away from a Realtek-based path. An internal card saves desk space but occupies a PCIe slot, requires case clearance and remains inside the PC. A small USB adapter sits at the rear port or can be placed where its cable reaches; it is easy to replace and avoids using an expansion slot. For a powered 2.1 system, stereo output is all the speakers need, so a multichannel gaming card may add cost and software without solving a real requirement.

Apple’s USB-C to 3.5-mm adapter is a basic stereo option; its US listing showed $9.00 when checked for this article’s source information. It is suitable as a low-cost bypass test for stereo speakers or headphones, not as an analog 5.1 replacement and not a source of Dolby/DTS encoding or game DSP. Verify that your PC has a compatible USB-C port. Apple USB-C to 3.5-mm Headphone Jack Adapter.

Make the purchase only after confirming these details
- Channels: stereo 2.1 or analog 5.1? A conventional stereo USB adapter cannot drive a set of analog 5.1 inputs.
- Connection: analog jacks, optical, HDMI or USB? Match the source device to the speaker or receiver’s actual inputs.
- Processing: do you need Dolby Digital Live, DTS Connect, virtual surround or other DSP, or just clean stereo output?
- Headphones: if you will use them, check their impedance and whether the device’s amplifier is appropriate.
- Fit: for PCIe, confirm an available slot, graphics-card clearance and case airflow; for USB, confirm port type and cable reach.
- Support and return terms: look for a current official Windows 11 driver, check local stock and price, and make sure you can return the device if it does not eliminate the symptom.
