How to open an EML file with Outlook
New Outlook for Windows
- Locate the
.emlfile in File Explorer. - Open new Outlook and display the reading pane.
- Drag the file onto the reading pane. Microsoft documents this as the supported drag-and-drop method.
If dragging is inconvenient, right-click the file in File Explorer, choose Open with, select Outlook (new), and optionally set it as the default application for EML files.
Outlook on the web
- Open Outlook on the web in your browser.
- Drag the saved EML file onto the reading pane.
- Read the message and use Outlook’s available message actions if you need to save or print it.
When a dedicated viewer is the better choice
You have a folder or archive
A mail client is convenient for an individual message. A viewer that presents a folder tree and search can be more practical when messages are stored as separate local files. Confirm that the program indexes the folders you need and whether search covers subjects, senders, body text and headers.
You need attachments or full message structure
EML files may contain HTML, plain text, rich text, inline images and attached files. EML Viewer Pro advertises HTML/RTF rendering, attachment opening or extraction and Internet-header access. Test a representative message before relying on any viewer for legal, investigative or records work, because rendering and attachment handling can vary by message.

You need repeatable exports
For a single record, printing from Outlook to PDF may be sufficient. For larger jobs, compare whether the viewer can export in the format and quantity you require, whether attachments are included, and how filenames and metadata are preserved.
Saving and printing messages from Outlook
Save an Outlook message
Microsoft’s version-specific instructions document downloading a message as .eml or .msg from Outlook on the web or Outlook.com. The exact command and location can differ by Outlook version, so use the message’s More actions or download control rather than assuming the desktop and web interfaces are identical.

Print to PDF on Windows
Microsoft documents printing an Outlook message to PDF by selecting Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Review the print preview before saving if page breaks, headers or attachments matter to your record.
Free versus paid: check the license, not just the download button
- CoolUtils’ guide describes Mail Viewer as free for home use; that does not automatically grant business or commercial rights.
- EML Viewer Pro advertises a 15-day free trial, so treat the trial as an evaluation period rather than a permanent free edition.
- Marketplace listings and vendor comparison pages can change. Check the publisher’s current license, trial duration, export restrictions and business-use terms before installing or purchasing.
Can Chrome or Google open EML files?
The cited CoolUtils comparison says Chrome and Google’s standard applications do not directly open EML files and recommends a dedicated viewer or conversion. That is a vendor guide’s statement, not an official Chrome or Google compatibility guarantee. If you only have a browser, use Outlook on the web where available or convert the message with software you trust; do not upload confidential mail to an unknown online converter.

Security and privacy checks before opening archived mail
- Open files from known sources and scan downloads with your security software.
- Do not enable scripts, macros or external-content prompts merely to read a message.
- Remember that an EML can contain links and attachments; inspect them as potentially untrusted content.
- For sensitive mail, prefer an offline, reputable viewer and avoid web converters that require uploading the file.
A practical decision guide
- One message: Try new Outlook or Outlook on the web first.
- Several local messages: Choose a viewer with folder navigation and search.
- Attachments or headers: Confirm extraction and header-display behavior with a sample file.
- PDF or batch records: Compare export, printing, naming and metadata handling before processing the archive.
- Home versus business use: Read the current license instead of assuming a product described as “free” is unrestricted.
