Choose ShareX when you need more control over the workflow
ShareX documents a wider set of capture types, including scrolling capture, as well as OCR and configurable after-capture and upload actions. Its editors include tools such as arrows, text, steps, blur, pixelation, highlighting, and crop. These options can be useful when you repeatedly capture, annotate, and deliver images in a particular sequence.
That configurability also makes destination choice important. Before enabling automatic uploads or link handling, confirm which service receives the image and who can access the resulting link. A screenshot may expose account names, customer details, internal URLs, or other sensitive information. If the image should remain local, choose a local save or clipboard handoff rather than a hosted destination.
ShareX’s official website states “More than 33 million downloads worldwide” and attributes the figure to ShareX Team in 2026. That is a vendor-published download count, not a count of active users or evidence of user satisfaction.

Which screenshot software works on Windows, Mac, and Linux?

Specify whether the usual outcome is a local file, clipboard transfer, an email or Office handoff, or a hosted link. Common issues to check before settling on a tool
A scrolling capture is incomplete or awkward
Confirm that the app supports scrolling capture and test it on the actual page or application. Dynamic content can change as a page scrolls, so a feature listing alone cannot guarantee a clean result for every site.
A screenshot contains information you meant to hide
Use the tool’s obfuscation or redaction options where available, then inspect the exported image itself before sharing it. Do not assume a mark-up layer or a selected upload destination has removed sensitive content from the underlying image.
