Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: choose Flameshot for the richest on-screen annotation workflow on X11, Ksnip for the safest choice across X11 and Wayland, and Spectacle if you use KDE Plasma and want the desktop-integrated default. Shutter remains useful on X11 when editing matters more than Wayland compatibility. Your display server (X11 or Wayland) is the first decision, not the distribution name.
Start with your display server
Linux screenshot behavior depends heavily on the display protocol. X11 allows traditional capture utilities broad access to windows and the screen. Wayland deliberately restricts that access; applications normally request captures through an XDG desktop portal approved by the compositor. The same program can therefore capture a region perfectly on X11 and show a permission dialog, lose window selection, or fail altogether on Wayland.
Check your session before installing anything:
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
The result is usually x11 or wayland. Also note your desktop environment: KDE Plasma, GNOME, and lighter environments can expose different portal implementations and shortcut settings. Always test region and window capture in the session you actually use.
Which Linux snipping tool is best?
| Tool | Best for | Capture modes | Annotation | X11 | Wayland | Desktop fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flameshot | Fast, annotation-first work | Selected region and desktop workflow | Arrows, highlights, blur/pixelation, text, freehand, rectangles, circles, counters and solid-color boxes | Strong | Experimental on GNOME and Plasma; portal setup may be required | Cross-desktop |
| Ksnip | Mixed X11/Wayland systems | Region, last region, monitor, full screen, focused window and window under cursor | Extensive Qt-based markup | Supported | Explicitly lists Plasma Wayland, GNOME Wayland and xdg-desktop-portal Wayland | Cross-desktop |
| Spectacle | KDE Plasma integration | Entire desktop, current monitor, active window, window under mouse and rectangular region | Practical built-in tools | Supported | Uses KDE/compositor integration | Excellent on Plasma |
| Shutter | Traditional editing-heavy X11 workflows | Window, region and screen modes depend on the session | Strong post-capture editing workflow | Best supported | Portal-based and limited by portal behavior | Cross-desktop, less Wayland-friendly |
Flameshot: best for marking up a capture immediately
Flameshot is the strongest recommendation when you run X11 and need to explain something visually without opening a second editor. After you drag a selection, its in-place toolbar provides arrows, freehand drawing, text, highlighting, rectangular and circular borders, blur or pixelation, numbered counters and filled color boxes. You can annotate, copy, save or share from the same selection workflow.

Choose Flameshot when
- You routinely circle UI controls, add numbered steps or obscure sensitive text.
- You want markup before the image is saved or copied.
- You use X11, where its capture model is most predictable.
Wayland qualification
Flameshot documents GNOME Wayland and Plasma Wayland support as experimental. Portal permissions can prevent region selection or produce an empty result. If a compositor update changes behavior, test the portal capture path again rather than assuming the application is broken. Keep its optional Imgur upload disabled when screenshots contain confidential material; save locally or copy to a controlled destination instead.
Ksnip: the safest cross-session recommendation
Ksnip is a Qt-based screenshot and annotation tool whose Flathub listing explicitly names Linux X11, Plasma Wayland, GNOME Wayland and xdg-desktop-portal Wayland. That breadth makes it the best general recommendation for a laptop that moves between desktop sessions or for a team standardizing on one utility.
Capture modes
- Custom rectangular area.
- Last-used region, useful for repeated documentation steps.
- Current monitor or the full screen.
- Focused window and the window under the cursor.
Use Ksnip when you need those modes plus markup, but do not want to maintain separate X11 and Wayland tools. Portal support still depends on the desktop’s implementation, so verify window capture after installation.
Spectacle: the KDE Plasma default
Spectacle is KDE’s integrated screenshot application and the natural first choice on Plasma. KDE documents capture of the entire desktop, the current monitor, the active window, the window under the mouse and a rectangular region, with keyboard shortcuts for quick access. KDE lists Spectacle 6.7.4 as released on 2026-08-04.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy integration matters
Spectacle follows Plasma’s shortcut, notification, clipboard and multi-monitor conventions. It is already present on many Plasma installations, so there is no extra background utility to configure. Choose it when your main requirement is reliable desktop, monitor or window capture rather than a large annotation palette.

Shutter: useful on X11, constrained on Wayland
Shutter remains a sensible option for users who capture first and perform more substantial edits afterward. Its project FAQ says it relies on a fully working X server. On Wayland, it captures through the XDG portal, and the available modes depend on what that portal exposes. A region or window workflow that works on X11 may therefore be unavailable or less predictable on Wayland.
Pick Shutter for an X11 workstation with an established capture-and-edit routine. Do not choose it as the default for a Wayland-first fleet without testing your exact compositor and portal.
Installation and first-run checklist
- Identify the session: run
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPEand record the desktop environment. - Use your distribution package manager or Flathub: install the package supplied for your release, or the Flatpak published by the project. Avoid mixing multiple copies until shortcuts and portals are working.
- Launch once from the application menu: this lets the utility create its configuration and reveals any portal permission prompt.
- Test four captures: a rectangular region, the active window, the whole monitor and a second monitor if you use one.
- Configure a global shortcut: assign a key that does not conflict with Plasma, GNOME or your window manager. On Wayland, the desktop’s shortcut may need to launch the application rather than emulate an X11 key grab.
- Test clipboard and file output: paste into an image editor and save a PNG locally. Confirm the output is not blank and that the intended monitor was captured.
- Review sharing settings: disable optional upload integrations for sensitive work and document where files are saved.
How to annotate a screenshot on Linux
Fast callouts
Capture a region with Flameshot or Ksnip, then use an arrow or rectangle to identify the control you are documenting. Add a counter for ordered steps and text only where the image itself needs context.
Protecting secrets
Use blur or pixelation for tokens, email addresses and account identifiers, then inspect the saved image at 100 percent zoom. A box drawn over text is not reliable redaction if the underlying pixels remain accessible; prefer an opaque filled box or remove the content before sharing.
Repeatable documentation
Use Ksnip’s last-region mode or a fixed monitor selection when producing a series of screenshots. Keep the same scale and output format so images align in a guide. For a one-off explanation on KDE, Spectacle’s window and rectangular shortcuts are usually faster than adding a second tool.

OCR, privacy and upload considerations
These utilities are primarily capture and annotation tools; OCR or text extraction is not a defining capability in the documented feature sets above. If searchable text is a requirement, treat OCR as a separate tool decision and verify it for your language and desktop session.
Local capture is the privacy baseline. A screenshot can include passwords, customer data, notifications or hidden browser tabs. Keep files on an encrypted, access-controlled location, check clipboard history, and review any configured upload provider before distributing a workstation image.
Troubleshooting common failures
Nothing happens when the shortcut is pressed
Another desktop shortcut may own the key, or the application may not be running in the background. Launch the utility manually, assign a unique shortcut in the desktop settings, and retry. On Wayland, prefer the compositor’s configured launcher.
Region capture is blank on Wayland
This usually indicates a portal or compositor limitation. Confirm that an XDG desktop portal is installed and active, approve the permission dialog, then test the native desktop screenshot utility. If it still fails, use Ksnip’s documented Wayland path or switch to an X11 session for that task.
Window capture selects the wrong window
Wayland portals may expose only the currently focused surface, while X11 utilities can use pointer position. Focus the target before invoking capture, try the “window under cursor” mode where available, and compare with monitor capture.

The result is low resolution
HiDPI scaling can make a screenshot look soft when displayed elsewhere. Capture at the monitor’s native scale when the tool offers that choice, and avoid repeatedly resizing a compressed image. Save a lossless PNG for editing; convert to JPEG or WebP only for delivery.
The application crashes or menus are missing
Check whether you installed both a distribution package and a Flatpak, then run one copy at a time. Reset the application’s configuration only after exporting any custom shortcuts, and retest under the current desktop session.
Performance, reliability and cost
All four tools are free software, so the practical costs are installation time, background processes and compatibility troubleshooting. Native Plasma integration generally minimizes setup on KDE. Ksnip reduces switching costs for mixed environments. Flameshot can be fastest for human-marked instructions because annotation happens during selection. Wayland portal requests add a permission step and can make repeated automated capture less predictable than X11.
