The best smart toaster depends on what you want to improve: connected controls, hands-off convenience, capacity, or the texture of artisan bread. For a genuinely connected toaster, the Revolution R180 Connect is the clearest fit. For most people who want useful automation without Wi-Fi, Breville’s Die-Cast Smart Toaster is the more practical buy. BALMUDA’s Toaster Pro is a specialist option for steam-assisted toasting, not a faster substitute for a family-size pop-up toaster.

“Smart toaster” is not a standardized category. It can mean a Wi-Fi connection and touchscreen, or simply motorized lowering and useful toast controls. The recommendations below are based on manufacturer specifications, U.S. listed prices observed in August 2026, and available independent testing—not firsthand testing. Prices and stock can change.

Smart toaster recommendations at a glance

Revolution R180 Connect Plus Expanded presets and a display feature 2 slices Wi-Fi, touchscreen, 38 listed bread types, photo frame The photo frame does not improve cooking $449.95
Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster BTA820XL Useful automation without Wi-Fi 2 slices Motorized lowering, “A Bit More,” “Lift & Look” No connected features $199.95
Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster BTA840XL Families or different toast preferences 4 slices Two independent control systems and automated functions Larger footprint; stock has varied by page snapshot $249.95

What counts as a smart toaster?

The label covers several different kinds of features, and they do not all affect toast in the same way:

Foyoconven Toaster 2 Slice, Smart Touchscreen Wide Slot Stainless Steel
  • [ANGLED TOUCHSCREEN & SILENT MODE] Monitor your progress with the 7.13-inch digital color touchscreen angled at 75 degrees for clear visibility. Features a real-time countdown timer to easily manage morning routines. Simply hold the Cancel button for 3 seconds to activate silent mode and mute key beeps instantly for quiet early mornings.
  • [BreadID Presets] Guessing the right time for different bread types always ends in burnt crusts. Engineered with BreadID Tech, this premium toaster 2 slice appliance auto-adjusts time and temperature across 6 precise presets. Tap once for flawless artisanal loaves or bagels.
  • [Single-Slice Eco] Toasting a single slice in standard toasters wastes energy and dries out the edges. Our advanced Single-Slice Tech actively redirects heat to the occupied slot—cutting energy use by 40%. Get 360° uniform crispness for solo servings without flipping.
  • [Memory Settings] Stop wasting precious minutes resetting your preferences every single morning. The smart memory function locks in your favorite shade and bread type—one tap away. Streamline your morning routine—enjoy your customized toast instantly without hassle.
  • [1.5" Wide Slots] Thick pastries and dense bagels often jam and burn in narrow slots. This 2 slice toaster wide slot design features 1.5" opening to fit thick slices easily—complete with a food-grade, non-stick stainless steel body and a removable tray for effortless cleaning.
  • Connected features: Wi-Fi and information such as weather, time, or date on a display. A Wi-Fi connection does not by itself prove app control, remote starting, voice support, or better browning.
  • Interactive controls: Touchscreens, countdowns, progress displays, and bread-type menus. These can make settings easier to see, but an elaborate interface is not a measure of cooking quality.
  • Cooking controls: Bread-specific presets and heat adjustments intended to account for differences in thickness, density, or moisture. Their usefulness depends on the food and how reliably a toaster applies them.
  • Convenience automation: Motorized lowering, automatic lifting, “Lift & Look,” and “A Bit More” controls. These can improve day-to-day ease without connecting the appliance to a network.
  • Specialized cooking: Steam-assisted heating or grill modes, as on BALMUDA’s toaster. That is a different cooking approach, not a synonym for Wi-Fi.

Do not assume that a digital toaster is connected or that a toaster marketed as smart uses machine learning. The features and their practical benefits are model-specific.

Best genuinely connected toaster: Revolution R180 Connect

The R180 Connect is the clearest match for shoppers who specifically want a connected toaster. Revolution lists Wi-Fi, a touchscreen, weather, time and date information, six bread types, and seven toast settings. It is a two-slice model with listed dimensions of 11.6 × 6.1 × 8.4 inches. The manufacturer-listed U.S. price observed in August 2026 was $399.95.

Its strongest case is interface and preset flexibility—not proven superiority in toast quality. In its independent review of the Revolution InstaGlo R180, RTINGS reported fast toasting and a broad set of controls, but also uneven browning between the two sides of bread on the tested unit. That result is a useful warning: a touchscreen and extensive menus do not guarantee even toast. It applies to the unit tested, not necessarily every unit or every bread type.

Buy it if the connected display and selectable bread types are features you will actually use. If you mainly want consistent daily toast, compare its performance and price with a premium conventional model first.

Best feature-rich connected model: Revolution R180 Connect Plus

The Connect Plus adds a built-in photo frame and lists 38 bread types, while retaining Wi-Fi and seven shade settings. The manufacturer-listed price observed in August 2026 was $449.95—$50 more than the Connect. Revolution also lists compatibility with a Toastie Press and a warming rack for this model.

  • 【Wide Slots in a Compact Design】Fits thick slices of artisan bread, bagels, muffins and waffles, while the compact toaster footprint saves counter space. Ideal for small kitchens, apartments and RVs

The expanded choices may appeal to a household that regularly switches among bread varieties. But a longer menu is not automatically a better result, and the photo display is a novelty or countertop-display feature, not a cooking improvement. Choose the Plus over the Connect only if its additional presets or photo frame justify the difference to you. Do not assume that every specialty preset suits every brand of bread; gluten-free loaves, for example, vary substantially in density and moisture.

Best premium choice for most people: Breville BTA820XL

Breville’s two-slice Die-Cast Smart Toaster provides useful automation without Wi-Fi or a touchscreen. Its controls include motorized lowering, “A Bit More” for extra toasting, “Lift & Look” to inspect progress, and bagel and frozen functions. The manufacturer lists two extra-wide slots, 900 watts, and dimensions of 8.6 × 11.6 × 7.5 inches. Its listed U.S. price observed in August 2026 was $199.95.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes it the more rational premium option for shoppers who want a more convenient routine, not a connected appliance. It is still a premium-priced toaster, so consider whether the controls are worth paying for if you use one setting on ordinary sandwich bread. Breville lists a removable front crumb tray and a one-year limited warranty; review the manufacturer’s product and support information for current details.

Best for families: Breville BTA840XL

The four-slice BTA840XL has four extra-wide slots and two independent browning-control systems, so each pair of slots can use a different setting. That separation can matter more than the slot count when family members prefer different browning or are toasting different foods at once. It also offers motorized lowering, “A Bit More,” “Lift & Look,” bagel and frozen functions.

Breville lists the model at 1,800 watts and 10.9 × 11.9 × 7.7 inches, with a removable front crumb tray and a one-year limited warranty. The manufacturer-listed price observed in August 2026 was $249.95. Its official page has shown inconsistent availability across page snapshots, so check live stock before deciding.

Mecity 2 Slice Toaster Touch Screen 1.5" Wide Slot, Stainless Steel Smart Bread Toaster for Bagel Muffin Waffle Gluten Free Breads, Timer, Defrost, Reheat, 120V 825W
  • 【Contemporary Design】: Equipped with a 4.4 inch big touch screen, now you can read all information you needed. Touch any icon on the display to select the corresponding setting, It's time to bring some technical sophistication into your kitchen!
  • 【For Most Breads】: On the touchscreen, you can select from 6 different browning levels and choose from various types of bread. With just a single click, this smart toaster will follow the programmed settings to bake your bread perfectly. Give it a try and enjoy perfectly crunchy breads!
  • 【Toast Evenly】: As a toaster, the primary function is to toast bread evenly. After thousands of tests, we've made adjustments to the structure and heating wires to ensure that this toaster delivers consistent results every time. You can trust that this toaster will not let you down.
  • 【Stainless Steel】: The shell of the toaster is crafted from a combination of mirror surface and brushed stainless steel, distinguishing it from other toasters made of plastic. Mecity toaster not only offers a shiny appearance but also ensures a durable service life.
  • 【Easy To Clean】: The toasting slots are made of non-stick, food-grade stainless steel, and there's a removable crumb tray at the bottom. With these features, cleaning the bread toaster requires minimal effort.

The extra capacity costs counter space and draws more power than the two-slice model. Wattage is not a direct quality score: the four-slice toaster serves more slots, and a higher rating alone does not establish that it browns better. In a crowded kitchen, consider the appliance’s electrical load alongside other devices on the circuit. See Breville’s current product information and its BTA840XL instruction manual.

Best for artisan-bread texture: BALMUDA The Toaster Pro

BALMUDA takes a different approach from a connected pop-up toaster. The Toaster Pro uses a supplied 5-cc water cup and steam-assisted cooking, with six modes including Salamander Grill Mode. BALMUDA says steam helps heat the bread while retaining interior moisture as the surface browns; that is the manufacturer’s explanation, not an independent guarantee of a particular taste or texture. Its listed U.S. price observed in August 2026 was $379.

This model makes the most sense for people interested in bakery-style bread and a more involved cooking process. You need to add water, and the process is not the same as putting bread into a conventional pop-up toaster and walking away. It is also a poor fit if your main need is to toast four slices quickly for a family. Consult BALMUDA’s product information and steam explanation for current instructions and specifications.

Choose by the improvement you actually want

  • Want Wi-Fi, a touchscreen, and bread presets? Start with the R180 Connect. Consider the Connect Plus if its expanded list or photo frame is valuable to you.
  • Want hands-off convenience without network features? The Breville BTA820XL combines motorized operation with useful inspection and extra-toasting controls.
  • Need four slices or two settings at once? The Breville BTA840XL is the relevant option, provided its footprint and current availability work for your kitchen.
  • Prioritize steam-assisted texture for artisan bread? Look at the BALMUDA Pro and accept the water-handling routine.
  • Mostly toast the same sandwich bread every day? A conventional toaster may be the better value. Connectivity is not essential to browning quality.

Which smart features are worth paying for?

For many households, these features have more practical value than a connected display:

  1. Independent controls when two pairs of slots need different settings.
  2. Useful bread presets if you regularly toast bagels, English muffins, frozen waffles, or pastries as well as bread.
  3. “Lift & Look” if you want to check browning without ending the cycle.
  4. “A Bit More” if you often want a short additional cycle rather than restarting from scratch.
  5. Motorized lowering or high lift if easier handling matters in your routine; check how well the carriage raises small foods.
  6. A countdown or progress display if visible timing makes the process more convenient for you.

Wi-Fi widgets and a photo frame rank lower unless you specifically want those features on your countertop. A large touchscreen can also be less convenient than physical controls with wet or flour-covered hands.

Inspirex Touch Screen Toaster - 2 Slice Extra-Wide Slots - 5 Bread Type and 6 Browning Levels - Defrost, Reheat, Favorite, Single Slot Settings - Stainless Steel
  • TOUCH CONTROL: Perfection is at your fingertips. This 2 slice toaster features a large and intuitive touchscreen interface with clear icons for you to make selections to accommodate your toasting desires.
  • BREAD TYPES AND BROWNING LEVELS: Choose from 5 bread types and 6 browning level options, and toggle defrost and reheat functions each with pre-programmed countdown times for precise toasting.
  • FAVORITE FUNCTION: Save your go-to bread type and browning level to instantly start toasting, saving you time and energy when starting your morning routine leading you into a productive day.
  • CONVENIENT SETTINGS: Utilize the toast settings to fine tune your cooking. Defrost for toasting frozen foods, Reheat for warming up food, and single-slot for toasting on only one side of the toaster.
  • SMOOTH MOTION LEVER: Simply press down the smooth motion lever to lower your bread into the toaster. Push CANCEL to automatically stop and raise your toast.

Check capacity, slots, and food fit before buying

Two slices suit many individuals and couples while using less counter space. Four slices can serve families or guests better, and independent controls can let different users toast to different preferences. Larger models usually occupy more space and may be heavier; compare dimensions against the counter area and overhead cabinets rather than relying on “compact” labels.

Check the slot design against what you actually eat:

  • Width and length: Extra-wide slots can accommodate thicker foods, but check whether long sourdough or artisan slices fit without forcing or folding.
  • Small foods: Find out whether the carriage raises high enough to retrieve small English muffins safely. Do not assume every slot suits very small pieces.
  • Bagels: Check how the bagel mode treats each side and follow the food’s placement instructions.
  • Frozen foods and pastries: Confirm that the food fits and use only the mode and food types allowed by the manual. Sugar or fillings can drip onto heating elements.
  • Accessories: Use only approved accessories. Revolution lists Toastie Press compatibility for its R180 models and warming-rack compatibility for the Connect Plus; verify the current product listing before buying.

Presets can help because foods differ in thickness, density, and moisture, and some are intended to brown differently on each side. They are more valuable if your household regularly toasts varied foods than if it mostly uses one kind of sliced bread. A gluten-free setting, where available on a particular version, cannot guarantee the same outcome for every loaf.

Toast quality matters more than feature count

When comparing models, look for evidence about evenness across a slice and between sides, repeatability across cycles, the range from light to dark, speed, performance with frozen food and bagels, moisture retention, crumb handling, and ease of use. A screen can tell you what the toaster is doing; it cannot by itself show that the result is better.

Available results from separate reviewers should not be treated as directly comparable rankings. Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying-guide data lists scores for some models, but the available reproduced table is not a substitute for checking the original test methodology. In particular, do not compare that score to a score from a different testing organization as though they use the same scale or process.

Cleaning, safety, and ownership

Look for a removable crumb tray and consider how easily you can reach crumbs around the slots. Crumbs can collect beneath internal mechanisms, so follow the manufacturer’s cleaning directions rather than tipping or probing the appliance in ways the manual does not allow. For a steam toaster, also follow its instructions for adding water and cleaning.

  • Unplug the toaster before cleaning and let it cool.
  • Empty the crumb tray regularly and keep the slots clear of obstructions.
  • Never put metal utensils into a plugged-in toaster to retrieve stuck food.
  • Do not toast cheese directly in the slots or use unapproved fillings or accessories; dripping food can create a mess or hazard.
  • Follow the model’s manual for stuck food, approved accessories, and water handling.
  • Check warranty terms and support information before buying. A feature-rich display or motorized carriage adds complexity, but the available specifications do not establish long-term reliability or parts availability.

Wi-Fi introduces another ownership consideration: network-dependent features may be less useful if software or support changes over time. That is a general risk to weigh, not a claim that any particular manufacturer will discontinue support.
