macOS Screenshot
Apple’s built-in Screenshot app covers entire-screen, window, menu, and selected-area captures. Use Shift-Command-3 for the full screen, Shift-Command-4 to select an area, or Shift-Command-4 followed by Space to select a window or menu. Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app and access options such as a timer, save location, and whether to show the pointer. Screenshots save to the desktop by default unless you change the destination.
Apple documents an additional capture-format choice—PNG SDR or HEIF HDR—on supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later. That availability is specific to the supported hardware and OS combination, not a universal Mac setting.
Best Windows screenshot tools beyond the default

ShareX is free and open source, has no advertisements, and is Windows-only. It combines full-screen, region, window, monitor, and scrolling capture with screen recording and GIF recording. Camtasia Snagit: best for guides, support, and repeatable visual explanations
TechSmith positions Snagit as a capture, markup, recording, and guide-creation product. Common selection and capture problems
The shortcut does not capture what you expect
On Windows, use Windows+Shift+S for an image snip and Windows+Shift+R for video. On Mac, distinguish the full-screen, area, and window/menu shortcuts; Shift-Command-5 opens the options panel when you need a timer or a different save destination. If your goal is a long page rather than what is visible on screen, choose a tool with documented scrolling capture instead of repeating ordinary snips.
