For automated Playwright tests, start with Playwright Test’s built-in video recording. It records at the test and browser-context level, can keep videos only for failures or retries, and fits naturally into CI artifacts. For scripted browser demonstrations, Playwright CLI’s WebM recorder adds chapter cards and action callouts. OBS Studio is the better choice when you need a produced desktop scene, while Loom is aimed at human-led browser tutorials and sharing rather than unattended test evidence.
The right choice depends on whether you need a debuggable per-test artifact, an explanatory walkthrough, or a polished desktop recording. There is no evidence here for a universal winner on image quality, CPU use, reliability, or 2026 pricing.

Record Playwright tests with Playwright Test
Playwright documentation states that you can record videos for your tests. Video is disabled by default. Configure it in the test project, then collect the resulting files as CI artifacts.

Keep videos for failures

Record on the first retry

Understand the artifact lifecycle
Playwright saves the video when the browser context closes. Do not attempt to upload or inspect a file before teardown has completed. In CI, publish the test-results directory after the test runner exits. If you create contexts manually, close each context in a finally block so the recording is finalized even when an assertion throws.

Create an explanatory browser demo with Playwright CLI
Playwright CLI documents WebM session recording for demos, documentation, bug reports and agent-session review. Its recorder can add chapter cards and action callouts and lets you configure the output size.
When CLI recording is preferable
- You want a narrated or scripted walkthrough rather than one file per test.
- You need visible chapters to divide login, checkout or other stages.
- You want action callouts that make clicks and navigation understandable to a reviewer.
Use the CLI’s current recording command and options from the version installed in your project, because command names and flags can change between releases. Treat the resulting WebM as presentation evidence, not as a substitute for a trace or assertion logs.
Use OBS Studio for a produced desktop capture
OBS supports display and window capture, browser sources, scenes, audio mixing, hotkeys, and scripts or plugins. Its documented --startrecording launch parameter can begin recording when OBS starts:
obs --startrecordingOBS is useful when you need a browser plus terminal, webcam, microphone, overlays or multiple scenes in one composition. A test runner can launch OBS around a run, but the available documentation does not prove test-level start/stop hooks, per-test file naming, or automatic retention of only failed cases. If you use it in CI, design your own process supervision, file naming and cleanup, and verify that the display server and browser window are available.

Use Loom for a human-led walkthrough
Loom’s browser-recorder positioning covers tutorials and walkthroughs. It is a reasonable choice when a person demonstrates a flow and then shares a link. The available evidence does not establish unattended browser automation integration, per-test artifact retention, or test-aware failure capture. Do not select it solely because you need recordings generated by a CI worker.
Recording controls that matter in automation
Trigger and scope
Decide whether recording starts for every test, only retries, only failures, or one complete session. Per-test scope is easier to correlate with a failing title than a single desktop movie containing many unrelated cases.
Lifecycle and storage
Plan around context closure, then upload artifacts after teardown. Set retention limits in your CI system and avoid recording secrets displayed on screen. Videos can be large; selective modes reduce storage without removing failure evidence.
Format and review
Playwright Test produces test videos, while Playwright CLI documents WebM output. Confirm that your CI viewer or issue tracker accepts the format, or transcode in a separate publishing step. Keep the original file when exact visual evidence matters.

Annotations and communication
CLI chapter cards and action callouts help a reviewer understand a scripted demo. Test videos generally show the browser state; pair them with the test title, trace and logs rather than adding desktop overlays that could hide an error.

No video file appears
- Check that
videois enabled; it is off by default. - Wait for the browser context to close before reading or uploading the file.
- For manual contexts, verify that the recording directory is writable and that your
finallyblock closes the context.
Only some tests have videos
Inspect the configured mode. retain-on-failure intentionally removes successful recordings, and on-first-retry records only when a retry occurs.
The recording is blank or misses the page
- Confirm the browser actually launched in the worker environment.
- Check that the page was navigated before the context closed.
- For OBS, verify the selected display or window source and the CI display server.
The file is not finalized in CI
Move artifact collection after the test command finishes. Uploading during a test’s active context can capture an incomplete file.
The demo is hard to understand
Use Playwright CLI chapters and action callouts for scripted explanations. For a richer composition with terminal, camera or audio, use OBS scenes instead of relying on test-video output.

Performance, reliability and cost decisions
No independent side-by-side test establishes comparative CPU load, dropped frames, capture quality, setup time or current plan value for these products. Measure in your own browser, CI image and resolution if those factors affect capacity.
- Reliability: test-aware Playwright recording has the clearest documented relationship to individual test artifacts.
- Storage: record selectively and retain failure artifacts rather than every successful run unless you need a full audit trail.
- Security: redact credentials, tokens and personal data before sharing videos; browser recordings show everything rendered in the viewport.
- Debugging: combine video with traces, console output and network logs instead of treating a movie as a complete diagnostic record.
